Out with rotator cuff strain
Fairbanks was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right rotator cuff strain, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The right-hander surrendered a run over 1.1 innings during his last appearance Tuesday at Boston, and he'll now be sidelined for the near future. According to Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network, Fairbanks will be shut down from throwing for 2-to-3 weeks, so he'll likely be unavailable until at least early May. Diego Castillo is 2-for-3 in save chances this season and should continue to operate as the primary closer with Fairbanks and Nick Anderson (elbow) sidelined.

Nabs second hold in as many games
Fairbanks was credited with his second hold in a win over the Marlins on Friday, firing a scoreless one-third of an inning during which he allowed no hits and issued one walk.
Impact
Fairbanks' quick five-pitch appearance Friday was preceded by a one-inning stint Opening Day. The 27-year-old logged 47.2 frames over the past two seasons, and his high-90s fastball should play well in the later innings again in 2021.

Hitting stride as season approaches
Fairbanks, who was credited with a hold in a Grapefruit League win over the Twins on Saturday, now has three scoreless outings in his last four spring appearances.
Impact
Fairbanks, who's expected to get a fair share of high-leverage opportunities this coming season, got a late start to Grapefruit League action due to a bout with food poisoning, but he's made up for lost time since his March 11 debut. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed an earned run apiece in two outings, including that first appearance, and Saturday represented his first clean effort of spring.

Gives up run in spring debut
Fairbanks allowed an earned run on a solo home run and did not record any walks or strikeouts over one inning in his first Grapefruit League action of the spring Thursday.
Impact
The right-handed reliever had seen his spring debut delayed by a recent bout of food poisoning. The long ball Fairbanks allowed was aided by wind, but he was otherwise effective. The 27-year-old failed to convert either of the two save chances he saw in 2020, but he proved his mettle as a strong later-inning option with a 2.70 ERA, seven holds and a 32.4 percent strikeout rate.

Overcomes bout with food poisoning
Rays manager Kevin Cash said that Fairbanks (illness) is scheduled to make his return to Grapefruit League action Thursday versus the Braves, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network...
Impact
Fairbanks was scratched ahead of his scheduled appearance Sunday due to a bout of food poisoning, but Cash indicated that the reliever has since recovered from the ailment and is feeling good again. Though he wasn't among the 12 Rays who recorded saves during the 2020 regular season, Fairbanks picked up three saves during the team's subsequent playoff run. The hard-throwing righty should continue to warrant consideration for end-game duties in 2021, though Cash isn't expected to commit to a primary closer.

Out with food poisoning
Fairbanks is dealing with food poisoning and will not pitch Sunday as previously scheduled, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact
Fairbanks hasn't pitched yet this spring and will now have to wait at least two more days to do so, as the Rays have an off day Monday. With Opening Day still more than three weeks away, he should have plenty of time to get up to speed even with a minor delay.
