Closing in on return Fairbanks (shoulder) threw a 12-to-14-pitch simulated inning Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Impact Rays manager Kevin Cash noted that Fairbanks looked strong during Monday's simulated action, and that the reliever is close to coming off the 10-day injured list. He's been sidelined since Apr. 9 due to a right rotator cuff strain.

Impact Fairbanks' strained right shoulder apparently held up well while he threw in a live batting practice session Saturday, so he'll take the next step forward in the recovery process by pitching in a simulated game. If all goes well Monday, Fairbanks could be reinstated from the injured list by the middle of the week.

Fairbanks logged three appearances this season before suffering his strain, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 2.2 innings.

The Rays will likely want to see Fairbanks pitch in at least one or two more rehab games at the alternate site or at a minor-league affiliate before potentially bringing him back from the 10-day injured list next week.
