GAME LOG

INJURIES

Exits with arm fatigue Margevicius exited Sunday's win over the Astros with arm fatigue, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Margevicius started Sunday's game and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk while striking out three in four innings. He didn't factor into the decision and left the game with a trainer after throwing 77 pitches. Manager Scott Servais said after the game that the left-hander isn't dealing with any structural damage. Margevicius is still expected to make his next scheduled start, Divish reports. The southpaw lines up to take the mound on the road against Boston on Sunday.

Rough outing in no-decision Margevicius didn't factor into the decision in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Orioles, giving up six runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over three-plus...
Impact While the Seattle defense was shaky behind him and committed three errors in a 7-6 loss, Margevicius contributed to his own problems with a hit by pitch and a wild pitch on top of the other runners he put on base. The southpaw tossed only 40 of 67 pitches for strikes in his first start of the season in place of James Paxton (elbow), and Margevicius will need to improve quickly if he wants to hang onto a rotation spot. He'll next take the mound Monday at home against the Dodgers.

Impact Justin Dunn beat Margevicius out for the sixth and final spot in the rotation during spring training, but the 24-year-old lefty didn't have to wait long to get his first opportunity to pick up a start. After he covered 3.2 innings in relief of the injured Paxton in Tuesday's loss to the White Sox, Margevicius should be reasonably stretched out by the time Paxton's next turn comes up April 13 in Baltimore.

James Paxton heads to IL as Mariners await MRI results

The Seattle Mariners have placed left-handed starter James Paxton on the 10-day injured list with a forearm strain in his pitching arm
APRIL 7, 2021 • Associated Press
Handed loss Tuesday Margevicius (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as he allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four across 3.2 innings against the White Sox.
Impact Margevicius unexpectedly was called upon in the second inning of Tuesday's game after James Paxton had to be removed due to a left forearm strain. He entered with a man on first and one out and was unable to get out of the inning cleanly. The 24-year-old walked the first batter he faced before serving up a three-run shot to Zack Collins to go down in an early 3-0 hole. He settled down for a few innings and the Mariners were able to crawl back to tie things up but Luis Robert took him deep in the fifth to put the White Sox back up 5-3. The long ball wasn't much of a concern for Margevicius last season, he was just merely brought into an unusual situation that he likely wasn't prepared for which likely threw his game off a bit. He will definitely require at least a few days of rest before manager Scott Servais even considers using him out of the bullpen again.

Mariners' Paxton leaves after 24 pitches due to elbow injury

Logs first bullpen appearance Margevicius logged a perfect ninth inning in a loss to the Giants on Friday. He did not record a strikeout.
Impact The left-hander competed valiantly for a rotation spot this spring. Although he ultimately came up short, he could enjoy a fairly robust multi-inning role out of the bullpen, given his past experience as a starter.

Beginning season in bullpen Manager Scott Servais announced Saturday that Margevicius will open the season as a reliever, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact The 24-year-old was completed for the No. 6 spot in the starting rotation, but Justin Dunn will begin the season in that role. Margevicius made seven starts in 10 appearances last season and posted a 4.57 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 36:14 K:BB across 41.1 innings. He figures to remain a candidate for the rotation as the Mariners require spot starts through the season.

Uneven performance Thursday Margevicius allowed four earned runs on five hits and two walks across 3.2 innings in a Cactus League loss to the Athletics on Thursday. He struck out four.
Impact The left-hander came in with a golden opportunity to distance himself from his competitor for the No. 6 starter role, Justin Dunn. However, Margevicius surrendered home runs to Jed Lowrie and Stephen Piscotty in the second inning. He had also allowed just one walk in three previous Cactus League outings before issuing a pair of free passes Thursday, but Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports the 26-year-old was still satisfied with how his spring went overall. "I feel like I had a really strong spring," Margevicius said. "I'm feeling confident with the stuff I worked on in the offseason, and that confidence kind of continued from every bullpen to my live BPs and each outing."

Impact Margevicius will follow his primary competitor for the job, Justin Dunn, who'll pitch Wednesday against the Cubs. Margevicius has arguably outperformed his young teammate, allowing just two earned runs and posting a stellar 10:1 K:BB across nine innings in his three Cactus League appearances thus far. Kramer notes that whichever pitcher loses the job battle will still be slated for starts at some point, considering that innings will be monitored carefully across the rotation, especially early in the season.

Cruises in relief outing Margevicius recorded six strikeouts across four scoreless innings in a Cactus League win over the Giants on Thursday, allowing four hits and no walks.
Impact Margevicus was not only credited with the win, but more important, he also seemingly gained a leg up in his competition with Justin Dunn for the final spot in the Mariners' six-man starting rotation. The southpaw lowered his spring ERA to 2.00 with his impressive showing, while Dunn, who started the game, was markedly less sharp while yielding three runs on a hit, three walks and a wild pitch over 2.2 innings.
MARCH 20, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Gives up pair of runs Margevicius allowed two earned runs on five hits over three innings in a Cactus League win over the Reds on Friday. He struck out three.
Impact The southpaw pitched in the same game as his primary competitor for the sixth starter role, Justin Dunn, for the second straight outing. Margevicius was slight outperformed by his teammate, who fired three innings and allowed just an unearned run. Margevicius wasn't quite as crisp and certainly more hittable, but he owns a solid 3.60 ERA through his first five spring frames.

Impact The young southpaw was solid in his first season with Seattle in 2020, posting a 2-3 record, 4.57 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 10 appearances (seven starts). Margevicius followed Justin Dunn, one of his primary competitors for the No. 6 starter role, in Saturday's contest and was able to match the latter's strong two-inning effort with one of his own. Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports Margevicius made a strong initial impression in what will be one of the more closely watched job battles of spring training. "Nick Margevicius does what he does," manager Scott Servais said. "He goes out there, he pounds the strike zone, gets quick outs."

In contention for No. 6 role Margevicius will compete with Justin Dunn and Logan Gilbert for the No. 6 role in the Mariners' starting rotation during spring training, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports...
Impact The southpaw turned in a serviceable body of work in 2020, going 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 41.1 innings over 10 appearances (seven starts). Margevicius closed out the campaign in solid fashion as well, allowing three earned runs or fewer in three of his last four starts. The 24-year-old already has a solid 27 total appearances (19 starts) under his belt at the big-league level after skipping Triple-A altogether while in the Padres organization, and he notably outperformed Dunn in both keeping runners off base and the ball in the park last season. Gilbert, one of the organization's top pitching prospects, figures to join the rotation for good early in the season.

Picks up second win Margevicius (2-3) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out four across six scoreless innings Wednesday as he earned the win over the Astros.
Impact Margevicius had a relatively smooth outing as he limited the Astros to just three hits while firing 94 pitches across six innings. The left-hander ran into a bit of trouble in the fifth as he found himself in a one-out, bases-loaded jam but was able to strike out George Springer and get Jose Altuve to fly out to end the scoring threat. With Wednesday being his last start of the season, Margevicius finishes his 2020 campaign with a 4.57 ERA, 1.26 WHIP annd 36:14 K:BB across 41.1 innings.
