INJURIES

Homers again Friday Kurtz went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies.
Impact Kurtz made things interesting in this contest, as he got the Athletics within a run after taking Jordan Romano deep in the ninth inning. This was Kurtz's fourth homer over the last four games, a span in which he has gone 5-for-14 with eight RBI and three walks. The first baseman is up to .231/.291/.440 slash line, five homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored and no stolen bases over 103 plate appearances. He looks to be past a slump from the middle of the month, and the power that has helped him take the fast track to the majors hasn't taken long to show up at baseball's highest level.

Records first multi-homer game Kurtz went 2-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs Wednesday in a loss to the Angels.
Impact Kurtz was the offensive star for the A's in defeat, popping two solo shots that each traveled over 430 feet. The promising young first baseman hit 11 long balls over 32 minor-league games across three levels before getting called up April 23, but he then began his big-league career with just one homer through his first 23 contests. Kurtz appears to be finally finding his power stroke, though, as he's now gone deep three times in his past two games.

Pops homer Tuesday Kurtz went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Angels.
Impact Kurtz's blast gave the Athletics a short-lived 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. This was his second homer of the season, though he went 0-for-20 with one walk and seven strikeouts over six games since his first long ball May 13 versus the Dodgers. That slump has him down to a .222/.270/.346 slash line over 24 games in the majors. With the A's in the AL West cellar, it's likely Kurtz will continue to get the opportunity to learn on the fly in the majors, though any prolonged slump could cost him at-bats versus left-handed pitchers more frequently.

Hits first big-league homer Kurtz went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 11-1 win over the Dodgers.
Impact Kurtz stretched the Athletics' lead to 9-1 in the eighth inning with the first homer of his big-league career. Aside from a lack of power, his bat has looked major-league ready since his April 23 call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Kurtz is batting .281 with a .732 OPS, six RBI, six runs scored, one double and one triple over his first 17 games in the majors while handling a starting role at first base.

Exiting starting nine Kurtz is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Mariners.
Impact It's Kurtz's second day off since his promotion in late April and the first time he's been out of the lineup against a right-hander. The rookie has been better so far in May (.278/.417/.389, 7:5 K:BB) after a sluggish April (.250/.240/.250, 12:0 K:BB) but is still looking for his first major-league home run. Tyler Soderstrom is handling first base Wednesday for the Athletics while Seth Brown patrols left field.

Taking seat versus lefty Kurtz is not in the lineup for Monday's game in Texas.
Impact The left-handed-hitting Kurtz started each of the previous three contests when the opponent had a left-hander on the mound, but he'll begin Monday's tilt on the bench as southpaw Patrick Corbin draws the start for the Rangers. Tyler Soderstrom will shift back to first base Monday, and Miguel Andujar will draw the start in left field for the Athletics.

First major-league hit in debut Kurtz went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Wednesday's win over Texas.
Impact Making his major-league debut, Kurtz delivered a two-out RBI single to drive in the third run of the Athletics' four-run first frame. The 2024 No. 4 overall pick has a fairly clear pathway to reps at first base in the majors, as Tyler Soderstrom moved to left field to accommodate for the arrival of Kurtz on Wednesday. Kurtz slashed .321/.385/.655 with seven home runs, seven doubles and 24 RBI over 97 plate appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas this year, and his power profile makes him an intriguing add in most mixed fantasy leagues for teams needing some pop.

Athletics rookie Nick Kurtz delivers an RBI single in his MLB debut against the Rangers

Rookie Nick Kurtz needed just one plate appearance for his first major league hit and first RBI
APRIL 24, 2025 • Associated Press
Big-league promotion official The Athletics selected Kurtz's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Wednesday's game against the Rangers.
Impact Reports first surfaced Monday indicating that Kurtz was on the move to the big leagues, but the Athletics waited until they had a matchup Wednesday with a right-handed starting pitcher (Kumar Rocker) before making the 22-year-old's call-up official. Despite the brief delay in his promotion, the left-handed-hitting Kurtz is expected to be given the chance to play regularly against both right- and left-handed pitching as he begins his major-league career. In leagues where he's still available on the waiver wire, Kurtz is worthy of a look for teams in need of power production after he slashed an impressive .321/.384/.655 with seven home runs and seven doubles over 20 games with Las Vegas prior to his call-up.
APRIL 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Will not be platooned Athletics general manager David Forst said Tuesday that Kurtz will not be platooned, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact The left-handed-hitting Kurtz has batted .296/.323/.482 versus lefties this season at Triple-A Las Vegas, and the Athletics want to give their top prospect a chance to be an everyday player. Kurtz will not play Tuesday against Rangers lefty Patrick Corbin, although that's more about giving him a chance to get acclimated in the majors. It's not clear whether the Athletics will officially add Kurtz to the roster Tuesday or wait until Wednesday. Kurtz is expected to serve as the Athletics' everyday first baseman, with some starts at designated hitter likely to be mixed in.
