Quirky baseball plays a continual challenge, point of emphasis for Derek Shelton and young Pirates The Pirates have encountered their fair share of odd plays. Here’s one way manager Derek Shelton’s team handles them.

Trevor Kelley - Back in big leagues Kelley was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Friday.
Impact Kelley will return to the majors after he was sent down Tuesday, replacing Adrian Houser (elbow) on the active roster after he was placed on the 15-day injured list. The reliever has produced an unimpressive 6.88 ERA and 1.29 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 17 innings in 14 appearances with the Brewers this season.

Jonathan Davis - Back in lineup Friday Davis (back/ribs) is starting in center field and batting ninth in Friday's series game against the Pirates.
Impact After crashing into the outfield wall Wednesday, Davis was forced to miss the remainder of the contest and was also unavailable for Thursday's loss. He will now return to the lineup in center field where he will fill in for Tyrone Taylor.

Michael Chavis - Sitting again Friday Chavis is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Brewers.
Impact Chavis will be on the bench again Friday as the Pirates take on right-hander Corbin Burnes. Josh VanMeter will draw the start at first base and bat fifth versus Milwaukee.

David Bednar - Struggles in return Bednar (back) allowed three earned runs on four hits and a walk across 0.2 innings Thursday against the Brewers.
Impact Bednar pitched for the first time since June 25 and was immediately inserted back into the ninth-inning role with a four-run lead. However, things didn't go according to plan from there, and he was pulled before he could record the final out of the game. It remains to be seen whether the poor performance was caused primarily by rust, or it's an indication that he's still not at full health. If Bednar becomes unavailable for an extended amount of time, Yerry De Los Santos appears to be the next man up for saves.
