Matches season high for strikeouts
Mikolas (9-13) allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over seven innings to earn the win Sunday over the Reds.
Impact
Mikolas matched his season high with 10 strikeouts. He logged quality starts in his last two outings of the season after an inconsistent campaign overall, which saw the veteran right-hander post a 4.78 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 137:39 K:BB across 201.1 innings. Mikolas is under contract for 2024, so he should be a mid-rotation starter for the Cardinals after enduring the worst of his five years with the club in 2023.

Dominant for eighth win
Mikolas (8-13) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings against the Brewers. He struck out five.
Impact
After allowing five earned runs and taking the loss in each of his last three starts, Mikolas rattled off seven innings of one-run baseball against Milwaukee. The outing marked Mikolas' second time in his last 10 starts not allowing a home run. Over that stretch (60 innings), Mikolas owns a 6.00 ERA with a 33:13 K:BB. He's lined up to close out the Cardinals regular season Sunday against the Reds at Busch Stadium.

Start pushed up to Tuesday
Mikolas will start Tuesday's game in Milwaukee, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Mikolas has flip-flopped with Zack Thompson, who will now start Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Dakota Hudson is on tap for Thursday's series finale. This slight change to the schedule could allow Mikolas to fit in two more starts before the Cardinals' season comes to a close.

Falters in 13th loss
Mikolas (7-13) took the loss Thursday, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and one walk over five innings against the Brewers. He struck out four.
Impact
Everything fell apart for Mikolas in the sixth inning as he allowed four runs, capped by a Victor Caratini three-run homer, and departed without making an out. This was the 35-year-old's eighth straight start allowing three or more runs, dating back to Aug. 14. Over that span, he has a 7.24 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB over 46 innings. Mikolas has pitched to the tune of a 4.95 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 122:37 K:BB over 187.1 innings this season.

Surrenders five runs in loss
Mikolas (7-12) took the loss against Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two batters over six innings.
Impact
Mikolas hung tough through four frames and trailed just 2-1 entering the fifth. However, Kyle Schwarber tagged him for a three-run blast in that inning to mar the veteran right-hander's final line. Mikolas rarely helps himself with punchouts -- he's notched exactly two in each of his past four starts -- so he largely has to rely on good control and keeping the ball in the park. The latter hasn't been a strong suit of his of late, as Mikolas has given up six homers over his past three starts -- one more than he had surrendered over his previous eight outings combined.

Gives up a pair of homers in loss
Mikolas (7-11) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Reds on Sunday.
Impact
Mikolas allowed five or more runs in a start for the 10th time this year. He infamously becomes the third pitcher to do so this season, joining Jordan Lyles and Lance Lynn. The 34-year-old has allowed three or more runs in each of his last six outings and has given up nine home runs over that span while failing to reach five strikeouts in any of those appearances. After posting extremely strong numbers in 2022, Mikolas has fallen back to earth this season. He now owns a 4.75 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 116:36 K:BB in 176.1 innings and lines up for a home start against the Phillies next.

Survives homers for seventh win
Mikolas (7-10) picked up the win in Tuesday's 10-6 victory over Atlanta, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out two.
Impact
All three Atlanta runs came on solo shots, but Mikolas otherwise kept the NL East leaders off the board and got more than enough run support from the Cardinals. The quality start was his 12th of the season, but since the All-Star break the right-hander has stumbled to a 5.69 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB through 55.1 innings, largely thanks to 10 homers allowed. He could have a hard time keeping the ball in the park again in his next outing, which is likely to come this weekend in Cincinnati.

Guts out quality start
Mikolas did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings against the Padres. He struck out two.
Impact
The Padres got an early jump on Mikolas, scoring three runs in the first two innings, before the veteran right-hander settled in to blank San Diego over his final four frames, allowing just two more hits. It's the first quality start for Mikolas since Aug. 8 -- he struggled to an 8.47 ERA over his previous three outings (17 innings). Overall, he's 6-10 with a 4.66 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 112:33 K:BB across 29 starts (164.1 innings) this season. Mikolas will be looking for his first win since July 17 in his next outing, currently lined up as a tough road matchup in Atlanta.

Struggles again in loss
Mikolas (6-10) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on eight hits and zero walks over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out three.
Impact
Among Mikolas' eight hits allowed were six extra-base hits, including five doubles. His last hit allowed was a solo home run to Alec Bohm in the sixth, which increased the Phillies' lead to three as they cruised from there to the victory. The eminently hittable Mikolas has now allowed 52 hits with only 30 strikeouts over his past 42.2 innings with a 6.12 ERA. He'll look to turn things around in his next start, currently scheduled for a matinee matchup next Wednesday at home against the Padres.

Roughed up by Mets
Mikolas (6-9) took the loss Saturday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a 13-2 loss to the Mets. He struck out four.
Impact
Mikolas allowed a season-high seven runs Saturday, including a solo home run to DJ Stewart in the fourth and a grand slam to Daniel Vogelbach in the fifth before being yanked. The outing ended a strong three-start stretch for Mikolas, who had allowed eight earned runs over 20.1 innings while striking out 16 batters. He'll look to get back on track in his next projected start, which is expected to come during a three-game road series against the Phillies next weekend.

Coughs up four runs
Mikolas yielded four runs on five hits and three walks over 6.1 innings in Monday's win over the Athletics. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
Impact
Mikolas rolled through four shutout frames before Oakland broke up the shutout in the fifth inning. It was the first time he allowed more than two earned runs in an outing since July 22 and his season ERA climbed to 4.27. Mikolas had issued just two walks over his previous seven outings, posting a 3.28 ERA during that stretch. His next outing is projected to be at home against the Mets.

Goes seven innings in loss
Mikolas (6-8) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings against the Rays. He struck out five.
Impact
Mikolas has pitched seven innings while allowing just two runs in each of his last two starts. However, he was stuck with the loss again Tuesday as the Cardinals failed to provide enough run support against Zach Eflin and the Rays. Mikolas has pitched to a 3.28 ERA over his last seven outings, lowering his ERA to 4.20 on the season with a 1.28 WHIP and 99:26 K:BB across 25 starts (141.1 innings). The 34-year-old Mikolas will look to get in the win column in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against Oakland.

Rejoining rotation Tuesday
Mikolas will return to the Cardinals rotation to start Tuesday's series opener at Tampa Bay after completing his five-game suspension.
Impact
Mikolas was handed the suspension one day after he was ejected for intentionally throwing at Ian Happ in his July 27 start against the Cubs. Because he initially appealed the decision, Mikolas was able to start the next time his turn in the rotation came up this past Tuesday against the Twins, but he then dropped his appeal one day later. After missing the remaining two games of the series with Minnesota and all three games with the Rockies this past weekend, Mikolas will return to the hill Tuesday on six days' rest.

Drops suspension appeal
Mikolas dropped the appeal of his five-game suspension and will begin serving it Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The suspension stems from his intentional plunking of Ian Happ on July 27. Mikolas just started Tuesday night against the Twins and will slot back into the Cardinals' rotation early next week versus the Rays. He stands 6-7 with a 4.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 94:26 K:BB through 134.1 innings (24 starts) this year.

Fans seven in tough loss
Mikolas (6-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Cardinals were downed 3-2 by the Twins, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out seven.
Impact
The right-hander was able to take his normal turn through the rotation while waiting to hear the results of his appeal on a five-game suspension, and Mikolas delivered his ninth quality start of the season on 109 pitches (72 strikes), although he came up short in a pitchers' duel with Pablo Lopez. Since the beginning of July, Mikolas has posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 24:4 K:BB through 35 innings, but assuming his suspension for throwing at Ian Happ in his previous outing is upheld, his next start will likely come some time next week, as the Cardinals shuffle their rotation following the Jack Flaherty trade.

Slated to start Tuesday
Mikolas, who is appealing the five-game suspension he received from MLB on Friday, is lined up to make his next start Tuesday against the Twins, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post...
Impact
Mikolas was handed the five-game ban one day after he was ejected in the second inning of the Cardinals' 10-3 loss to the Cubs for intentionally throwing consecutive pitches at Chicago's Ian Happ. A resolution on Mikolas' appeal isn't expected to come before Tuesday, so the 34-year-old should be able to take the hill that day in what would have been Jack Flaherty's turn through the rotation. Since Flaherty is a candidate to get dealt ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, the Cardinals would rather not have him pitch that day and instead prefer to go with the well-rested Mikolas, who threw only 14 pitches in his last start prior to being ejected.

Suspended for five games
Mikolas was suspended for five games after throwing at Ian Happ on Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Mikolas threw back-to-back pitches at Happ after Happ hit Willson Contreras in the head on his backswing. Mikolas was ejected from Thursday's game after hitting Happ with the second pitch, and he will now be held out of the Cardinals' next five games as well. Mikolas is appealing the suspension, but for now he will be held out until Aug. 3.
