Soroka latest Diamondbacks starting pitcher to hit injured list; Lawlar also sidelined again

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost another starting pitcher to injury when they placed right-hander Michael Soroka on the 15-day injured list with a strained right glute
JUNE 21 • Associated Press
Placed on injured list The Diamondbacks placed Soroka on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a strained left glute.
Impact Soroka suffered the injury while warming up for the second inning of Friday's game, putting a premature end to his start. He'll now be forced to sit out through the beginning of July, though he may still be able to make a few more starts before the All-Star break, depending on how quickly he can recover. Philip Abner was recalled from Triple-A Reno to give Arizona extra bullpen depth while the team sorts out its rotation plans.

Exits early Friday Soroka was removed from Friday's game against the Twins with an apparent injury, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Impact Soroka gave up two hits in a scoreless first inning Friday but felt something while warming up for the second and was taken out of the game. It's unclear what exactly the 28-year-old righty is dealing with, but the D-backs should provide an update on his status in the near future.
JUNE 20 • ROTOWIRE
Impressive again in no-decision Soroka completed seven innings against Cincinnati on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out seven batters in a no-decision.
Impact Soroka gave up a run on two hits in the third inning, but aside from that frame the only baserunner he allowed came on a first-inning hit-by-pitch. The right-hander retired the final 13 batters he faced and finished with his sixth quality start over his past eight outings while fanning seven batters. Soroka is in the midst of an excellent campaign, posting an 8-3 record along with a 3.11 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 79:17 K:BB over 81 innings spanning 14 starts. Perhaps most importantly, he's managed to stay healthy -- he's nine innings away from reaching 90 in the majors for the first time since the 2019 season.

Shuts down Nats for eighth win Soroka (8-3) earned the win Sunday against Washington, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six across seven innings.
Impact After surrendering a game-tying solo homer to CJ Abrams in the second inning, Soroka was nearly perfect the rest of the way, tossing five scoreless frames to close out his seven-inning effort. It was his first start of at least seven innings with one or fewer earned runs since August 10, 2019 -- a meaningful milestone for a pitcher who has spent the better part of those six years battling back from two torn Achilles injuries. Soroka's ERA at Chase Field sits at an impressive 2.09 across eight home starts this season. With a 3.28 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 72:17 K:BB in 74 innings, he will seek to build off Sunday's success in his next scheduled start on the road against Cincinnati.

Settles in after early struggles Soroka (7-3) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings to take the loss against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Impact Soroka gave up all four runs and six of the seven baserunners he allowed over the first two innings. He was able to settle in after that, but the Diamondbacks' comeback effort came up short. Considering the tough matchup, this was decent work for Soroka. He's at a 3.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 66:15 K:BB through 67 innings over 12 starts this season. Soroka is projected to make his next start over the weekend at home versus the Nationals.
JUNE 3 • ROTOWIRE
Up to seven wins Soroka (7-2) earned the win Wednesday over the Giants, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out three.
Impact It was another strong outing from Soroka, who's held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last five outings, posting a 1.78 ERA with 24 strikeouts and just five walks in that span (30.1 innings). Overall, Soroka's ERA is down to 3.25 on the year with a 1.20 WHIP and 60:14 K:BB across 11 starts (61 innings). He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively scheduled as a tough home matchup next week with the Dodgers.
MAY 27 • ROTOWIRE
Sharp in no-decision Soroka allowed one run on four hits and a hit batsman while striking out two without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision Friday versus the Rockies.
Impact Soroka didn't have his best strikeout stuff, but he gave the Rockies little to work with. He's allowed just four runs over 24.1 innings in May, adding a 21:5 K:BB this month. Soroka has given up two runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts overall, pitching to a 3.27 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 57:14 K:BB through 55 innings. This is the closest he's looked to his promising early years before injuries ravaged his career, but durability remains the biggest question for the right-hander. He'll look to keep rolling with a projected road start in San Francisco next week.
MAY 23 • ROTOWIRE
Strikes out eight in win Soroka (6-2) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Sunday.
Impact Soroka escaped a Coors Field start without allowing a homer, and the eight strikeouts were his most in any of his last six outings. He's now allowed two runs or less in seven of his nine starts this season, including each of his last three, though he came up an out short of a quality start. For the season, he has a 3.49 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 55:14 K:BB through 49 innings. Soroka is projected to make his next start at home in a rematch with the Rockies.

Last Night in Baseball: 2025 AL MVP Runner-Up in 36 At-Bat Hit Drought
Sharp in fifth win Soroka (5-2) earned the win Monday, allowing three hits and a walk over 6.1 scoreless innings against Texas. He struck out five.
Impact Soroka was stellar, stifling the Texas offense with little resistance across 6.1 innings. Monday marked the right-hander's first scoreless outing since his season debut March 30 against Detroit, though he has now held opponents to two or fewer runs in six of eight starts. The 28-year-old has regularly looked sharp in his first year with Arizona, posting a 3.53 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 47:12 K:BB across 43.1 innings. Even those solid numbers are inflated by a lone blowup outing April 30 against Milwaukee in which he allowed eight earned runs. Soroka's next start is tentatively lined up for Sunday against Colorado.
