GAME LOG

INJURIES

No-decision Wednesday Castro tossed a scoreless inning in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, giving up one hit and one walk while fanning one. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact As expected, Castro worked as the opener in the second half of the twin bill but only tossed 22 pitches (11 strikes) and didn't return for the second inning. Castro bounced back in this one, as he had allowed three runs (two earned) in his previous appearance. That was a small bump on the road for the right-hander, however, as the 26-year-old hasn't allowed runs in six of his last seven outings.

Gets ball for Game 2 of twin bill Castro is scheduled to start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Cardinals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Mets are still making Castro available out of the bullpen behind starter Marcus Stroman for the first game of the twin bill, suggesting that manager Luis Rojas is planning to use Castro as more of an opener for the nightcap than a traditional starter. Castro hasn't topped 31 pitches or recorded more than five outs in any of his 10 appearances this season, so he shouldn't be expected to work more than two innings in the second game before his night is over. Jordan Yamamoto and Sean Reid-Foley represent logical options to serve as a bulk reliever in Game 2, if the Mets decide to go that route.

Mets-Cardinals game rained out, doubleheader Wednesday

The scheduled game between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed because of rain

Tuesday's game postponed Castro won't start Tuesday at St. Louis since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact The 26-year-old was set to start a bullpen game after Jacob deGrom (lat) was a late scratch, but the game ended up being postponed. Castro may not end up receiving a starting opportunity, as the Mets will have some extra time to square away the pitching staff. The game will be made up via a doubleheader Wednesday with Marcus Stroman starting the matinee, while the starter for the nightcap remains up in the air.

Starting on short notice Tuesday Castro will start a bullpen game for the Mets on Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Impact Jacob deGrom was a late scratch due to side tightness, so it will be all hands on deck out of the Mets' bullpen. This will be Castro's first start since July 15, 2018, and his season high is 1.2 innings back on April 13, so it's highly unlikely he logs more than a couple frames.

Bringing heat in 2021 Castro has a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB through six innings in six appearances with one hold.
Impact The 26-year-old hasn't seen consistent high-leverage work, but Castro has been one of the best bullpen arms for the Mets in the early going. He's averaging career highs with a 98.5 mph average fastball velocity and 36.0 percent strikeout rate, and more opportunities for holds could be coming if he keeps racking up K's.

Locked into bullpen job Castro should begin the season as part of the Mets' bullpen, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander has been sharp this spring, allowing only one hit and one walk over 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out seven. Castro's spot in the pecking order isn't yet clear, but things appear wide open after closer Edwin Diaz and eighth-inning man Trevor May, so he could quickly work his way into a setup role if he remains effective.

Avoids arbitration Castro signed a one-year, $1.6875 million contract with the Mets on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
Impact The 26-year-old was acquired from the Orioles at the August trade deadline and allowed four runs on 11 hits with a 14:8 K:BB during his brief time with the Mets. Castro should enter spring training in a middle relief role for New York.

Picks up win Castro (1-1) allowed a hit and a walk but struck out the side in a scoreless eighth inning as he earned the win over the Phillies on Wednesday.
Impact Castro allowed two to reach via a base hit and a walk but got through the inning without any harm after striking out the side. The 25-year-old has a 4.09 ERA and 32:9 K:BB across 22 innings with the Orioles and Mets this season.
