Out with shoulder inflammation Wacha was placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Impact The injury presumably flared up during Friday's start against the Marlins, when the 29-year-old allowed four runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks over five innings. Wacha doesn't have a timetable for his return, but he's likely to at least miss his next two starts.

Fans nine in loss Wacha (1-2) took the loss Friday as the Mets fell 4-3 to the Marlins, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out nine.

Impact All the runs scored in the second inning, with the big blow being a three-run homer by Francisco Cervelli, but otherwise Wacha was fairly sharp. The right-hander threw 64 of 98 pitches for strikes before exiting, and while his 6.43 ERA and 1.64 WHIP aren't pretty, Wacha's 18:5 K:BB through 14 innings suggests better days are ahead. He's next scheduled to take the mound Wednesday, at home against the Nationals.

Impact Not only would Peterson be the likely replacement this season if one of Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Rick Porcello, Steven Matz or Michael Wacha miss time, but he is also poised to be a part of the 2021 rotation, with Noah Sydergaard (elbow) expected to miss the first couple months and Stroman, Porcello and Wacha set to be free agents after this season. Peterson is often tabbed as a future back-end starter, but he has good command of a quality three-pitch mix and is excellent at generating groundballs, so he could outperform expectations. He has never pitched above Double-A, however, so it would be unwise to expect him to have success right away if he is forced into action this season.
