INJURIES

Beginning season as opener Manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday that Fulmer (elbow) will begin the season in an "opener-type" role, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact Gardenhire has alluded to the 27-year-old opening the season with a limited workload throughout training camp, so this announcement hardly comes as a surprise. Fulmer should work his way to a traditional starter's workload eventually, but he'll start the season being limited to a few innings. Tyler Alexander is a likely option to fill innings during Fulmer's shorter outings.

Expected to begin in piggyback role Fulmer (elbow) is expected to open the season as a piggyback starter, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact Fulmer says he's ready to start after working his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in March of 2019, though the Tigers seemingly won't ask him to handle a starter's workload right away. Fulmer is already a relatively uninteresting fantasy option, as he posted a 4.69 ERA and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate in his most recent healthy season back in 2018, and he becomes even less interesting if his innings are limited.

Ready to start Fulmer (elbow) believes he's ready to be a part of the Tigers' rotation, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Players being optimistic about their own readiness is hardly a new phenomenon, though there aren't too many reasons to doubt Fulmer's self-assessment here. It's now been 16 months since he underwent Tommy John surgery, a fairly typical length of time for getting back into game action. He threw three innings in live batting practice Saturday, meaning he's probably just a session or two from being able to handle a typical starter's workload. Whether or not he has broad fantasy relevance is another matter, as his 4.69 ERA and 19.7 percent strikeout rate his most recent season back in 2018 were far from exciting.

Early role uncertain Fulmer's (elbow) role at the start of the season remains unclear, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Impact The delayed season has bought Fulmer the time to return from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in March of 2019, without missing any more time. The Tigers may not be comfortable giving him a starting role right away, however, with manager Ron Gardenhire mentioning the possibility of using him as an opener until he builds up stamina. The 27-year-old was an unexciting option in his most recent healthy season, posting a 4.69 ERA and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate back in 2018, and his stock takes a further hit if he winds up making only eight or nine true starts this season.

Pitches in intrasquad game Fulmer (elbow) tossed two innings in an intrasquad game Wednesday, allowing an unearned run and striking out one, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Impact It was Fulmer's first action in a game setting since spring training of 2019, so while it was just a scrimmage, it was good to see the righty on the mound. The team didn't have a radar gun on him, meaning no velocity readings to gauge quite yet. Fulmer will continue to build up his arm during summer camp, and the team could use him in a long-relief role to begin the season to limit his workload after he missed all of last year.
JULY 8, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Looks lighter in camp Fulmer (elbow) appears to have lost some weight during his rehab from Tommy John surgery, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact It's unclear exactly how much weight Fulmer shed, but onlookers at Detroit's summer camp noted that the 27-year-old appeared to be in good shape. "I just feel more efficient," Fulmer said. "I feel like I'm using my body in better ways, putting less stress on the elbow and less stress on the knee, just to be more efficient and not be as violent. Putting my body in the best position." Physical conditioning will be critical for Fulmer, who last pitched in the majors in 2018. The Tigers have said the righty is ready to go, but they figure to carefully monitor his innings and could have him pitch out of the bullpen to start the season to reduce his workload.
