AL East-leading Red Sox acquire Robles and Davis in trades
The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox have acquired right-hander Hansel Robles from Minnesota and left-hander Austin Davis from Pittsburgh in a pair of trades

Sent to Pittsburgh
Chavis was traded from the Red Sox to the Pirates on Friday, Keith Law of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Chavis was once a fairly highly-rated prospect, but he's failed to live up to his potential through his first 168 MLB games. He's struck out in 33.6 percent of his plate appearances while slashing just .234/.291/.413. The move to one of the league's most pitcher-friendly parks in Pittsburgh certainly doesn't help his outlook, though he's at least now with a rebuilding organization that could give him the opportunity to work through his struggles in a regular role.

Sitting against lefty
Chavis is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact
After starting five times in seven-game span, the righty-hitting Chavis will sit for the second consecutive contest, even though Toronto is bringing a lefty (Hyun Jin Ryu) to the hill. Chavis has gone 3-for-19 at the dish since his June 9 promotion from Triple-A Worcester, but despite his lack of success, he should see semi-regular at-bats as Boston's top utility option until Marwin Gonzalez (hamstring) returns from the injured list.

Fourth start in six games
Chavis will start at second base and bat ninth Monday against the Blue Jays, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
Impact
Chavis will essentially be filling in for Xander Bogaerts in the series opener, as regular second baseman Enrique Hernandez bumps over to shortstop while Bogaerts gets the day off. With all of Christian Arroyo (hamstring), Marwin Gonzalez (hamstring) and Danny Santana (groin) residing on the injured list and none believed to be close to returning, Chavis should serve as the Red Sox's top utility man in the short term. He'll be making his fourth start in six games Monday.

Homers in Wednesday win
Chavis went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 7-4 victory over Toronto on Wednesday.
Impact
Chavis contributed to a barrage of Red Sox home runs in the contest with a 409-foot solo shot in the fifth frame. The long ball was just his second of the season, as he has spent much of the campaign in the minors. Chavis has had a difficult time while up with the big club in 2021, slashing .200/.221/.354 across 68 plate appearances.

Returns to majors
Chavis was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact
The 25-year-old was sent to the minors at the start of the week but will rejoin the Red Sox with Danny Santana (quadriceps) going to the injured list. Chavis is hitting .207/.230/.328 in 61 plate appearances this season and should provide infield depth for Boston.

Returning to Triple-A
The Red Sox are optioning Chavis to Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact
The infielder loses his spot on Boston's 26-man roster now that Christian Arroyo (knee) is ready to return. Difficulties making contact with fastballs and a pull-heavy approach have led to just three hits in 25 at-bats for Chavis since being recalled June 24. Future infield injuries could demand Chavis' return to the big-league roster in 2021, but he has shown little since his 2019 debut season to suggest he can be a consistent hitter at the MLB level. Arroyo, a more reliable defender and hitter, will be recalled in a corresponding move.

Could be headed back to minors
Chavis started at second base and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Sunday's 1-0 win over Oakland.
Impact
Chavis was called up to Boston after Christian Arroyo (knee) landed on the injured list June 24. With Arroyo's expected activation in time for Monday night's game in Anaheim, Chavis could be headed back to the minors. Arroyo just had to get through a minor league game Saturday without incident -- he did, going 1-for-4 for Triple-A Worcester -- and was expected to join the club Monday. Chavis has gone 3-for-25 (.120) with nine strikeouts since he was called up, the third time on the Mass Pike shuttle from Worcester to Boston.

Chavis isn't starting Saturday's game against the Athletics, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe
Impact
Chavis has gone 1-for-10 with two runs, two RBI and a strikeout across the last five games, and he's alternated starts across the last several games. Enrique Hernandez will shift to second base while Danny Santana starts in center field.

Playing time trending up
Chavis will start at second base and bat ninth Monday against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact
Before heading to the bench for Sunday's 9-2 win over the Yankees, Chavis had served as Boston's leadoff man in each of the previous three contests. He'll cede table-setting duties to Enrique Hernandez in Monday's series opener with a lefty (Danny Duffy) on the hill for Kansas City, but Chavis at least appears to have supplanted Danny Santana as Boston's preferred option at second base. Through 46 plate appearances at the big-league level this season, Chavis is slashing .244/.261/.400.

Fills in for Dalbec
Chavis started at first base, batted lead off and went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 5-3 win over the Yankees.
Impact
Chavis was recently called up after the Red Sox placed Christian Arroyo (knee) on the injury list, and he's started both games since the promotion. He played second base Thursday and filled in for a slumping Bobby Dalbec on Friday. More significantly, he batted lead off for a second straight game, as the Red Sox continue to audition candidates atop the order.

Starts at 2B, leads off
Chavis went 0-for-3 with a walk in Thursday's 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay.
Impact
Chavis was called up when the Red Sox placed Christian Arroyo (knee) on the injured list. He not only took Arroyo's spot on the active roster, but he also took his roles at second base and batted lead off. Chavis later moved to first base after Bobby Dalbec was removed for a pinch hitter.

Recalled by Red Sox
Chavis was recalled by the Red Sox on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact
Chavis has already spent three separate stints on the big-league roster this season. He owns a respectable 100 wRC+ in 11 games, but his 39.4 percent strikeout rate and 0.0 percent walk rate make for a worrying combination. He's been solid but unspectacular in 24 games for Triple-A Worcester, homering six times while slashing .263/.327/.474. A corresponding move has not yet been announced.
