Chasing pitches Chavis failed to control the strike zone throughout spring training, which was a factor in the Red Sox sending him to the alternate camp, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Impact Chavis lost out on the final roster spot to Christian Arroyo. Having minor-league options while Arroyo did not likely factored into the decision, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke to Chavis chasing pitches. "We talk about a few things that he needs to do to be the complete hitter we know he can be. I think at the end, he didn't control the strike zone. He was very aggressive chasing pitches out of the zone," Cora said. Chavis had a 1.129 OPS over the first 18 spring games, but the infielder went just 2-for-17 with eight strikeouts over the final seven contests. He'll start the season at Triple-A Worcester and work on understanding the upper edge of the strike zone and driving pitches in the zone.

Boston manager Alex Cora praised Chavis' ability to lay off pitches outside the zone, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. If that were to continue, it'd improve his chances of claiming the final bench spot. Smith also noted that Chavis will likely make the Opening Day roster if Franchy Cordero opens the season on the injured list. Cordero began camp on the COVID-related IL and only recently began working out with the team. If he lands on the IL to start the season, Marwin Gonzalez would be the likely starter in left field.

Chavis apparently won't warrant any consideration to replace him, with Cora instead naming Marwin Gonzalez as the top candidate to fill in for Cordero if needed. While Chavis still would offer the ability to play three infield spots, his chances of winning a utility role with Boston don't appear to be high with Gonzalez, Enrique Hernandez, Danny Santana and Christian Arroyo all offering similar or better defensive versatility. In addition, Chavis has minor-league options remaining, which also figures to work against him in his bid for an Opening Day roster spot.
