Brandon Hughes - Advances to mound work Hughes (knee) will throw a bullpen session Sunday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Impact Hughes' inflamed left knee responded well to playing catch Friday, so he'll take the next step forward in his throwing progression by getting back on the mound to close out the weekend. Because he's on the injured list for the second time this season with a left knee issue, Hughes may not be a lock to be activated from the IL in the minimum 15 days. He'll likely need to make at least one or two minor-league rehab appearances prior to being reinstated.

Yan Gomes - Takes part in batting practice Gomes (concussion) was spotted taking batting practice Sunday, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.
Impact The activity is a sign that Gomes is making progress in his recovery from the concussion he suffered last Monday, though he still hasn't received official medical clearance from the head injury. Once he's activated from the 7-day injured list, Gomes should settle back in as the Cubs' No. 1 catcher, but Tucker Barnhart and Miguel Amaya will split time at the position for now.

Adrian Sampson - Undergoes meniscus surgery Sampson underwent a meniscal debridement procedure on his right knee Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Impact The Cubs haven't provided a timeline for Sampson's return, but he's presumably at least several weeks away from being ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. After being optioned to Triple-A Iowa coming out of spring training, Sampson made two starts for the affiliate before going down with the knee injury. Chicago recalled him from Triple-A on Thursday, but it was merely a procedural move, as he shifted from Iowa's 7-day injured list to the Cubs' 15-day IL. Sampson could move to the Cubs' 60-day IL if the organization needs to free up a 40-man roster spot at some point later on this season.
