Becomes free agent Gonzales elected to become a free agent Tuesday.
Impact He had been removed from the Rangers' 40-man roster, and Gonzales has opted to seek a job elsewhere rather than accepting an outright assignment. The lefty has yielded one run with a 3:4 K:BB over 6.2 innings covering three appearances for the Rangers this season.
1 DAY AGO • ROTOWIRE
DFA'd by Rangers The Rangers designated Gonzales for assignment Saturday.
Impact The Rangers will push Gonzales off the active and 40-man rosters to create roster space for Jakob Junis (thigh), who returned from the 15-day injured list Saturday. Gonzales has surrendered just one run in 6.2 innings with the Rangers but carries a 7.57 ERA and 1.87 WHIP across 69 frames in the minors this season.

Rangers bring up minor league INF/OF Cody Freeman and LHP Marco Gonzales

The Texas Rangers recalled infielder/outfielder Cody Freeman and selected the contract of left-hander Marco Gonzales from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday
5 DAYS AGO • Associated Press
Selected from Triple-A The Rangers selected Gonzales' contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.
Impact Gonzales elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A on Aug. 2 but returned to the Rangers on a minor-league deal shortly afterward and will now reclaim a spot in the big-league bullpen, replacing Ben Peoples. Gonzales has given up just one run in six MLB innings this season, but his 7.57 ERA and 1.87 WHIP at Triple-A suggest that he'll be limited to low-leverage work with the Rangers.
5 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Returns to Texas on MiLB deal Gonzales re-signed Friday with the Rangers on a minor-league contract.
Impact Gonzales will report to Triple-A Round Rock after coming to terms on a new deal with Texas just five days after electing free agency. The 34-year-old lefty previously made two appearances at the big-league level for the Rangers, giving up one earned run on seven hits and four walks over six innings.
AUGUST 10 • ROTOWIRE
Clears waivers The Rangers outrighted Gonzales to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
Impact Gonzales cleared waivers and will stick around in the Texas organization after he was designated for assignment Friday. The veteran southpaw was up with the Rangers for about a week and a half, making two relief appearances and allowing one earned run on seven hits and four walks across six innings.

JULY 31 • Associated Press
Removed from 40-man roster The Rangers designated Gonzales for assignment Friday.
Impact Gonzales permitted a total of one run in a pair of three-inning relief outings for the Rangers, but he's nonetheless being jettisoned to waivers. The southpaw would have the ability to elect free agency, if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Earns first MLB save Gonzales recorded his first career save Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two over three scoreless innings.
Impact After Kumar Rocker limited Chicago to one hit across six scoreless innings, Gonzales took over for his first appearance of the season after being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. He allowed at least one baserunner in each inning but was able to finish off the game for the first save of his major-league career after spending most of his time as a starter since debuting in 2014. Gonzales joined the Rangers on a minor-league deal in late June and allowed 16 earned runs over 16.2 innings in three Triple-A starts before his promotion. He isn't expected to see many future save chances while serving as a fill-in for Jose Corniell (elbow).

Impact Gonzales joined the Rangers on a minor-league pact in late June and has since allowed 16 earned runs in just 16.2 innings over three starts. Despite his poor performance, the 34-year-old will return to the majors for the first time in two seasons and join the Rangers' bullpen as a long reliever, replacing the injured Jose Corniell (elbow).

Gets MiLB pact from Rangers The Rangers signed Gonzales to a minor-league contract Monday, mmm reports.
Impact Gonzales was released by the Padres last week after posting a 7.99 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 36:18 K:BB over 47.1 innings at Triple-A El Paso. He missed the entirety of the 2025 campaign following flexor tendon surgery. The 34-year-old Gonzales will give the Rangers some experienced rotation depth, presumably at Triple-A Round Rock.

Let go by Padres The Padres released Gonzales on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Gonzales had spent the season with Triple-A El Paso prior to his release Tuesday. There, he had a 7.99 ERA with a 2.03 WHIP with a 36:18 K:BB through 47.1 innings across 3 games. The southpaw had missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his left forearm. His last MLB appearances were in 2024 when he had a 4.54 ERA in seven games for the Pirates.
JUNE 16 • ROTOWIRE
Won't make Opening Day roster The Padres reassigned Gonzales to minor-league camp Saturday.
Impact Gonzales signed with San Diego on a minor-league contract in late January. The Padres had an open competition for their final two Opening Day rotation spots this spring, but Gonzales failed to make an intriguing case, posting an ugly 10.80 ERA, 2.55 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB over 13.1 innings. The 34-year-old missed all of last season while recovering from flexor tendon repair surgery in his left forearm, and given his results this spring, it's clear he hasn't yet fully shaken off the rust.

FEBRUARY 28 • FRIARSONBASE.COM
Nets NRI pact from San Diego The Padres signed Gonzales to a minor-league contract Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact Gonzales will receive $1.5 million if in the majors, with an additional $1 million available in incentives. The lefty went unsigned while missing the entire 2025 season following flexor tendon surgery, but he should be fully recovered from that operation and enter spring training without major restrictions. Gonzales -- who turns 34 in February -- hasn't pitched in a game setting since Aug. 2024, so he'll surely need some time in the minors. He holds a career 4.16 ERA over 170 appearances (162 starts) at the major-league level.
JANUARY 29 • ROTOWIRE
Free agent after option declined The Pirates declined Gonzales' (forearm) $15 million club option for 2025 on Monday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Gonzales will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season after having flexor tendon surgery in September, so declining the option was a given. He'll enter free agency as he continues the rehab process.
NOVEMBER 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Undergoes surgery Gonzales underwent flexor tendon repair surgery on his left forearm Friday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Gonzales is expected to need 12 months before returning to play, meaning he will likely be sidelined for most, if not all of the 2025 campaign. The Pirates are expected to decline his $15 million team option for next season, and the 32-year-old southpaw may pursue a two-year deal in free agency.
