Impact The Rockies roughed up Bumgarner, launching nine balls off him in the air at 95 mph or harder. Following a 2020 season in which Bumgarner experienced a dip in velocity, the stuff the Diamondbacks thought they were getting when they signed him in Dec. 2019 has returned to a degree, but the results have not yet been there. After two starts, the left-hander has permitted 11 runs over nine innings. He's in line to make his next start Monday at home against Oakland.

Some good, mostly not Thursday Bumgarner did not factor into the decision despite allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over four innings in Thursday's 8-7 loss to San Diego.

Impact Bumgarner escaped the loss when the Diamondbacks' bats heated up, but he permitted two home runs, grinded through innings two through four and needed 91 pitches for 12 outs. He did experience an uptick in velocity, averaging 90.3 MPH and topping out at 92.5, higher than at any point during the 2020 season, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. He also induced 14 swinging strikes and thought he pitched better than the results indicate. The left-hander is scheduled to pitch again next Wednesday at Colorado.

Getting Opening Day nod Manager Torey Lovullo said that Bumgarner will start the Diamondbacks' season opener Thursday in San Diego, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Impact After Zac Gallen was diagnosed Tuesday with a hairline fracture in his forearm that will result in him beginning the season on the shelf, Bumgarner became the logical choice to get the ball on Opening Day. Though he turned in career-worst numbers (6.48 ERA, 1.44 WHIP in 41.2 innings) over his nine-start debut season with Arizona in 2020, Bumgarner has shown improved velocity this spring and has generated better results due in part to altered mechanics. The 31-year-old lefty's best days are clearly behind him at this point, but if the spring changes prove to be real, he could have some appeal in mixed leagues as a late-round bounce-back target.

Impact Bumgarner declared himself ready for the regular season following the outing, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. "You know, I was glad to get up and down six times. Made some pretty good pitches today. So yeah, I feel pretty good about it,' the left-hander said. Bumgarner was able to pitch into the sixth inning and get his pitch count to 85, setting himself up for 100 pitches if needed in his first regular-season start. That could come Opening Day, but manager Torey Lovullo has not yet announced starter for next Friday in San Diego.

Tries new tactics Bumgarner experimented with a new delivery in a "B" game on the back fields Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Impact Against a lineup of mostly Los Angeles Angels minor leaguers, Bumgarner was quick pitching -- cutting off his motion and delivering pitches in an expedited manner. He also played with dropping down and firing pitches from a lower angle. The left-hander had success doing it, navigating through five-plus innings. "Pitching is disrupting timing and hitting is timing," Bumgarner said. "Doing whatever I can do to try to be as good as I can. Honestly, I think it makes too much sense not to do it if you can do it." It's unclear how much Bumgarner will employ these tactics when the regular season starts, but he said there was no trouble reverting to his normal delivery on an ensuing pitch and that he had an overall feel for his pitches.
