INJURIES

Nats turn on power late as MacKenzie Gore dominates the Red Sox The young left-hander had everything working until a blister forced his exit before Keibert Ruiz and Stone Garrett homer late in a 6-2 win o...

Dealing with cut on fingernail Gore left Wednesday's start against the Red Sox due to a cut nail on his left index finger that developed into a blister, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gore was taken out of the game after making a pitch way out of the zone, but luckily his injury doesn't appear to be too severe. The 24-year-old southpaw surrendered just one hit through 6.1 scoreless frames Wednesday and should be able to make his next start -- currently scheduled for next Wednesday against the Yankees.
AUGUST 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Exits with trainer Gore was removed from his start Wednesday against Boston after suffering an apparent injury, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact After Gore badly missed the zone on a pitch during the seventh inning, a trainer came out to look at him and ended up taking him out of the game. It's not immediately clear what Gore is dealing with, but the Nationals should provide more information soon. For now, he should be considered day-to-day.
AUGUST 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Workload to be reduced Gore will have his workload managed for the remainder of the season as the Nationals deploy a six-man rotation, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact The 24-year-old southpaw has already thrown a career-high 117 innings this season, 30 more than he tossed across all levels in 2022. "I was hurt last year, I didn't throw many innings. So that's a real thing that we're going to have to deal with," Gore said Wednesday after his start against the Phillies. Shifting to a six-man rotation will cost the Nats' regular starters a turn or two over the remainder of the season, but if younger arms like Gore or Jake Irvin show serious signs of fatigue in August, the team could re-evaluate the situation when rosters expand in September. After wrapping up May with a 3.57 ERA, Gore has regressed to a 5.64 ERA over his last 59 innings, albeit with a strong 60:22 K:BB.
AUGUST 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Falls to Phillies Gore (6-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings in a 7-0 loss against the Phillies. He struck out five.
Impact Gore surrendered runs in each of the first four innings, including three in the opening frame, as the Nationals were no-hit by Michael Lorenzen on the other end in the 7-0 defeat. The 24-year-old Gore had pitched well in his previous three outings, working to a 2.81 ERA over 16 innings. His ERA is now up to 4.62 with a 1.43 WHIP and 134:50 K:BB across 23 starts (117 innings) this season. Gore's currently lined up for a home matchup next week with the Red Sox in his next outing.
AUGUST 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Pitches well in no-decision Gore did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Brewers. He struck out five.
Impact Gore left a four-seamer over the middle of the plate in the top of the second, which Tyrone Taylor launched into the stands to give the Brewers their first run of the game. However, the lefty settled in after that mistake, going 1-2-3 over the next two innings before allowing just one more run on a Christian Yelich double in the sixth. It marked Gore's first quality start since June 3 and he's now allowed three or fewer runs in three consecutive outings. On the downside, he's also issued at least two walks in four straight and in eight of his last nine.
AUGUST 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Wild in eighth loss Gore (6-8) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over five innings as the Nationals were downed 5-1 by the Mets. He struck out two.
Impact The southpaw put runners on base in every inning, but he kept New York off the board until the fifth, when two straight walks to open the frame set the stage for a three-run blast by Pete Alonso. Gore exited the game having thrown only 57 of 95 pitches for strikes, and he's issues multiple free passes in seven of his last eight outings, posting a 5.11 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 41:18 K:BB through 37 innings over that stretch. He'll look for a better result in his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Brewers.
JULY 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strikes out eight in win Gore (6-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks over five scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out eight.
Impact Gore was sharp Sunday, scattering four hits en route to his third win in his last five starts. The 24-year-old southpaw has tallied eight or more strikeouts six times this season. Gore lowered his ERA to 4.37 with a 1.44 WHIP and 122:43 K:BB through 20 starts (101 innings) this year. He's currently lined up to face the Mets on the road in his next outing.
JULY 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Gives up five runs but nabs victory Gore (5-7) earned the win over the Cubs on Monday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings.
Impact Gore was staked to an early lead and gave up just one run through five innings, but he yielded a two-run homer in each of the sixth and seventh frames to lose his quality start. Still, the left-hander pitched well enough to earn the win, just his second over his past 14 outings. Gore had has his share of ups-and-downs this season, giving up five or more runs on four occasions and one or fewer seven different times (though one of those was a rain-shortened appearance his last time out that lasted only 1.1 innings). All of that has added up to a 4.59 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 10.7 K/9, which lines up pretty closely with his marks as a rookie last year.
JULY 18, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Start interrupted by rain Gore did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one hit over 1.1 scoreless innings against the Reds while striking out one.
Impact Gore only made it into the second inning before the game was delayed nearly two due to rain. He then retreated to the dugout after being relieved by Mason Thompson when the game resumed. The 24-year-old lefty made it through the first inning on just eight pitches before allowing a single to Elly De La Cruz to open the second. Unfortunately his day would end there as he's now been unable to make it through three innings in either of his last two starts, with the latter coming at no fault of his own. Gore will look to get back on track in his next start, presumably at some point just after the All-Star break.
JULY 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
On track for next start Gore (finger) is slated to start Thursday's game against the Reds at Nationals Park.
Impact Gore failed to escape the third inning and was lit up for seven earned runs on six hits and three walks in his most recent start against the Phillies on Saturday, revealing afterward that he dealt with a blister on his left middle finger. The southpaw didn't express any concern about the abrasion forcing him to miss his next start, and the Nationals seemingly aren't worried either. Gore will look to bounce back Thursday from his disastrous outing last week, which caused his ERA to jump from 3.89 to 4.48.
JULY 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
MacKenzie Gore's day ends early as Nats get knocked around in Philadelphia Gore exited in the third inning as the Phillies were on their way to a 19-4 laugher that ended the Nationals' three-game winning streak.
JULY 1, 2023 • WASHINGTONPOST.COM
Dealing with blister Gore exited Saturday's start against the Phillies with a blister on his left middle finger, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Gore was crushed for seven runs prior to exiting the game with trainers in the third inning. He will undergo further evaluation, so it remains unclear if he'll make his next scheduled start prior to the All-Star break.
JULY 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Exits with trainer Gore left his start Saturday against the Phillies with a team trainer, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Gore was lit up by the Phillies, giving up seven runs on six hits and three walks in 2.2 innings while striking out three batters. It's possible he can blame an injury for his struggles, but it's possible he's fine and just had a poor outing, as he repeatedly told the trainer, "I'm alright," as he left the field, per Blanco. If Gore has even a very minor injury, however, he's likely to hit the injured list, as the All-Star break begins in just over a week.
JULY 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Punches out nine in win Gore (4-6) yielded one run on five hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out nine and earning a win over San Diego.
Impact Gore tossed four scoreless innings before the Padres put a run on the board in the fifth frame. He finally got back in the win column for the first time since April 26. In 10 starts between those two wins, Gore posted a 4.53 ERA through 53.2 frames. He lowered his season ERA to 3.89 with a 104:36 K:BB across 16 starts. His next start is lined up to be in Philadelphia.

Surrenders two homers in loss Gore (3-6) took the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals after allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings.
Impact Gore tied his season-high after giving up nine hits and allowed two home runs, both to Dylan Carlson, as he gave up five runs for the second time in three starts. He did impress with eight strikeouts, which were his most since he had 11 May 28, but has now failed to win a decision since April 26. The 24-year-old now owns a 4.02 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 95:34 K:BB over 80.2 innings and will look to turn things around over the weekend against the Padres.

Tosses 5.2 scoreless frames Gore allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 scoreless innings in a no-decision against Houston on Thursday.
Impact Gore threw just 51 of 95 pitches for a strike and walked more batters Thursday than he did in his previous three games combined, but he didn't allow any extra-base hits. That helped him keep the Astros off the board, and he finished with his second scoreless outing of the campaign. Since dominating the Royals with 11 punchouts in seven innings May 28, the southpaw has notched just 13 strikeouts over his subsequent 16.2 frames, and he's been inconsistent in that category throughout the season, though his overall 10.5 K/9 is very solid. Gore's 3.74 ERA and 1.38 WHIP aren't exceptional, but the 24-year-old has shown improvement in his second MLB campaign, and he could yet fulfill the potential that made him one of the game's top pitching prospects just a few years ago.
JUNE 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Yields five runs in loss Gore (3-5) took the loss against Atlanta on Saturday, allowing five runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three batters over five innings.
Impact Four of the five runs Gore gave up came in the second inning, when Atlanta tagged him for a pair of two-run homers. This was the first time in 2023 that the southpaw has given up more than four runs in an outing, and the performance snapped a streak of two straight quality starts. Gore hasn't picked up a win since April 26, and he's posted a 4.71 ERA with a 48:13 K:BB over 42 innings during the drought. He's made some positive strides this season, though his overall 4.04 ERA and 1.39 WHIP are only slight improvements over his final 2022 numbers.

Takes loss despite quality start Gore (3-4) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on nine hits over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out six and didn't issue a walk.
Impact Gore submitted his sixth quality start of the season but suffered his third loss. The left-hander has avoided a disastrous start thus far and sports quality numbers (3.66 ERA and 1.42 WHIP) over 12 outings, but he hasn't reached his potential yet. Gore's 80:28 K:BB is elite through 64 innings, so if he can find a way to be more efficient and consistent, the 24-year-old could emerge as a top-tier fantasy starter as the season progresses. However, Gore's next start is scheduled for the opener of a three-game set in Atlanta, which should be a tough test for the 2017 first-round pick.
