Optioned to Triple-A Patino was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino was in the mix for the Rays' fifth starter spot, but his 11.17 ERA and 1.86 WHIP this spring will cause him to open the year in the minors. Patino has struggled to a 5.10 ERA in 114.2 career major-league innings, including an awful 8.10 ERA in six starts last season, but he's still just 23 years old. A strong month in the minors could easily see him return to the majors for the bulk of the year, but for now, it will be Yonny Chirinos or Josh Fleming who opens the year as the Rays' fifth starter.
MARCH 25, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggling in recent starts Patino was knocked around for seven runs in 2.2 innings in his final spring start Friday against the Mets, raising his Grapefruit League ERA to 11.17.
Impact Patino is fighting with Yonny Chirinos and Josh Fleming for the Rays' fifth starter job, and he hasn't made a very strong case. In addition to his inflated ERA, he also owns a poor 1.86 WHIP and has walked seven batters and hit three more in 9.2 innings. Chrinos hasn't pitched well either, recording an 8.59 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 7.1 frames, while Fleming's 4.91 ERA in 14.2 innings is better but still unimpressive. The Rays could wind up getting creative every fifth day until Tyler Glasnow (oblique) returns, something the organization has plenty of experience doing.
MARCH 25, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Rays' Luis Patino has another rough outing with opening day creeping up Tampa Bay has a temporary opening in the rotation, but the right-hander does not do himself any favors in a lopsided loss to the Mets.
MARCH 24, 2023 • TAMPABAY.COM
Holding opponents scoreless Patino has thrown 5.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and three walks in three appearances in the Grapefruit League.
Impact Patino is in consideration for a rotation spot with Tyler Glasnow (oblique) sidelined, and he's pitched well early on. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings against the Mets on Sunday, an outing highlighted by strikeouts of Francisco Alvarez, Tommy Pham and Danny Mendick. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that manager Kevin Cash voiced concern over Patino consistently falling behind in the count, though he also noted that Patino made several strong pitches to work out of trouble. Josh Fleming and Yonny Chirinos are also in consideration for the fifth starter role.
MARCH 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Option for rotation Patino is a candidate to enter the Rays rotation while Tyler Glasnow (oblique) remains sidelined, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino had been building up as a starter to begin spring training, though his fit in the rotation was unclear so long as everyone remained healthy. With Glasnow sidelined 6-to-8 weeks, Patino now enters the conversation to step into a starting role and will be competing primarily with Josh Fleming and Yonny Chirinos. Patino showed flashes of brilliance during the 2021 season, but his 2022 campaign was derailed by oblique and shoulder injuries so it's unclear how much he would be capable of contributing.
MARCH 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Being built up as starter Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed Friday that Patino (shoulder) is being built up as a starter this spring, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Patino struggled to an 8.10 ERA in six major-league starts last season and was shut down in September with a shoulder issue, but he brought a clean bill of health into camp, and the Rays still hope that he can provide some organizational rotation depth. The 23-year-old is likely to open the season at Triple-A Durham, assuming Tampa Bay's five projected starters make it through the spring unscathed. Patino could be the first pitcher called upon if an injury opens up a spot.
FEBRUARY 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Scratched with shoulder issue Patino was scratched his scheduled start Saturday for Triple-A Durham due to right shoulder discomfort, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The 22-year-old righty has had a difficult season. He opened the year in the rotation but failed to complete a single inning before suffering an oblique strain which sidelined him until mid-July. Since his return, he's bounced between the majors and minors, posting a 7.91 ERA in six MLB starts and a 4.50 ERA in nine Triple-A outings. He's now at real risk of missing the remainder of the season unless his shoulder injury turns out to be very minor.

Optioned to Triple-A Patino was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Friday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.
Impact Patino will return to Durham after being called up to start Thursday versus the Royals. The right-hander tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, surrendering four hits and two walks while striking out four on his way to a win. Kevin Herget will replace him on the major-league roster and is set to make his MLB debut as a 31-year-old. Patino will remain top candidate for a call-up down the stretch.
AUGUST 19, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up first win of campaign Patino (1-1) earned the win over Kansas City on Thursday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 scoreless innings.
Impact Patino was called up from the minors earlier in the day and impressed in his first big-league start in nearly a month. The right-hander fanned only four batters but racked up 16 swinging strikes among his 86 pitches. He didn't surrender any extra-base hits and allowed only one runner to reach second base. The Rays are in the midst of a busy schedule, so Patino could take another turn in the rotation after his strong outing Thursday.
AUGUST 19, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Officially recalled prior to start Patino was recalled from Triple-A Durham ahead of Thursday's start against the Royals, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.
Impact Patino was sent to the minors July 23, and he posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 9.2 innings over three starts following his demotion. The Rays are in the midst of a stretch in which they're playing 17 games in 17 days, so the right-hander will return to the big leagues to start Thursday's home matchup. It's not yet clear whether Patino will make another turn through the rotation following Thursday's outing, and it's possible that the decision will be made based on how he performs against Kansas City.
AUGUST 18, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Call-up coming, will start Thursday The Rays plan to call up Patino from Triple-A Durham to start Thursday's game against the Royals in Tampa Bay, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Tampa Bay isn't known to be dealing with any injuries or expected absences to any members of its current five-man rotation, so it's possible that manager Kevin Cash just wanted to break in another starting pitcher with the Rays in the midst of a stretch of 17 games in 17 days. Patino will be making his fourth appearance for Tampa Bay in 2022, with the right-hander having thus far spend a considerable portion of the season on the injured list due to a significant oblique strain. He's generally looked good across his last three outings at Durham, accruing a 3.72 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB across 9.2 innings.

Optioned to Triple-A Patino was optioned to Triple-A Durham following his start Saturday against the Royals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino pitched four innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three in a no-decision versus the Royals. The right-hander will now head to Durham to open a roster spot for Jeffrey Springs (leg) to return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's series finale. Patino owns a 6.75 ERA over three starts with the Rays this season and will look to get back into a groove in Triple-A.
JULY 24, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Decent against Royals Patino allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision versus the Royals on Saturday.
Impact The runs against Patino came in the third inning, but the Rays were able to get him off the hook in the seventh. In his second start back from an oblique injury that kept him out for three months, the right-hander was able to stretch out to 72 pitches (41 strikes), up from 56 pitches in his previous outing. He struggled against a weak-hitting opponent, and Patino now has a 6.75 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 3:4 K:BB across eight innings in three appearances this season.

Looks on track to start Saturday Patino is expected to start Saturday's game in Kansas City, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact According to Topkin, the Rays prefer to push their top two starters -- All-Star Shane McClanahan and two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber -- to the back of the rotation to begin the second half, so Patino appears primed to take the hill for Tampa Bay's second game out of the All-Star break. In his return from the 60-day injured list July 15 against Baltimore, Patino started but was pulled after 3.1 innings (56 pitches). The light workload was likely the result of Patino having not made a rehab start nearly two weeks before the July 15 outing, but he should have a longer leash Saturday.
JULY 21, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Yields two runs in no-decision Patino allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over 3.1 innings during Friday's win over Baltimore. He failed to record a strikeout and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Patino made his first MLB appearance since April 11 after a lengthy stint on the injured list. His fastball sat in the mid-90s but he forced just two swinging strikes. The two runs he allowed Friday both came via the long ball, as Trey Mancini and Ramon Urias each knocked a solo home run. Patino threw 38 of 56 pitches for strikes and the Rays are likely going to be cautious with the 22-year-old as they ramp up his workload.
JULY 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Reinstated from 60-day IL Patino (oblique) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of Friday's start against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Patino had his rehab assignment shut down in early July due to a blister and won't be fully stretched out for Friday's start as a result. However, he's been cleared to rejoin the Rays ahead of the series opener against the Orioles, who have won their last 10 games. The right-hander tossed 78 pitches during his rehab start July 2, but it's not yet clear how many pitches he'll be able to throw following his layoff. Tommy Romero was sent down to make room for Patino on the active roster.
