Diamondbacks promote top prospect Jordan Lawlar after hot start in Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks called up top prospect Jordan Lawlar as they fight for position in a loaded National League West division

José Castillo - Dropped from 40-man roster The Diamondbacks designated Castillo for assignment Monday.
Impact Castillo will lose his spot in the Arizona bullpen with the Diamondbacks activating right-hander Kendall Graveman (back) from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. After getting called up from Triple-A Reno on May 1, Castillo filled a low-leverage relief role and gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits and three walks in 6.1 innings across five appearances. The 29-year-old lefty is likely to clear waivers and will have the option of either accepting an outright assignment to Reno or electing free agency.

Garrett Hampson - Booted off 40-man roster The Diamondbacks designated Hampson for assignment Monday.
Impact Hampson will lose his spot on the Arizona roster with the Diamondbacks calling up top prospect Jordan Lawlar from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. After attending spring training with the Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee, Hampson was able to secure a utility role with the big club heading into Opening Day. He saw limited action over the first month and a half of the season, appearing in 18 games and slashing .167/.359/.167 with two steals across 41 plate appearances. Hampson's speed and defensive versatility could entice another team to put in a waiver claim for him and bring him aboard as a bench bat.

Kendall Graveman - Makes return from IL The Diamondbacks reinstated Graveman (back) from the 15-day injured list Monday.
Impact Arizona designated lefty Jose Castillo for assignment to open up a spot in the bullpen for Graveman, who missed the first month and a half of the season while recovering from a right lumbar strain. Graveman had previously missed the entire 2024 campaign while on the mend from right shoulder surgery, but he checked out healthy after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings across his three minor-league rehab appearances. Prior to his shoulder surgery, Graveman found success as a setup man and occasional stopgap option at closer, but he may have to settle for a middle-relief role initially with Arizona coming off a lengthy absence from big-league action. The back end of the Diamondbacks bullpen is highly unsettled, however, so Graveman could move up in the pecking order quickly if he excels in his first few relief appearances.

Jordan Lawlar - Call-up official Arizona recalled Lawlar from Triple-A Reno prior to Monday's game against the Giants.
Impact Arizona designated infielder/outfielder Garrett Hampson for assignment to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for Lawlar, who is back in the big leagues for the first time since 2023. The 22-year-old hit just .129 over a 14-game sample with Arizona that season, then spent all of 2024 in the minors while missing considerable time due to a torn ligament in his thumb as well as a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Despite the injury-plagued season, Lawlar maintained his status as the Diamondbacks' top prospect, and he opened the 2025 campaign healthy and slashed .336/.413/.579 with six home runs and 13 steals in 37 games with Reno to push his way back onto the big-league roster. The Diamondbacks don't have an obvious everyday spot in the lineup available for Lawlar, but he's expected to pick up a handful of starts per week while rotating between second base, third base and shortstop after seeing time at all three positions with Reno this season.

Steward Berroa - Acquired by Dodgers The Dodgers acquired Berroa from the Blue Jays on Monday in exchange for cash considerations, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
Impact Berroa had been booted off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster and will now head to a new organization. The 25-year-old will report to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he will give the Dodgers outfield depth.
