Gets eighth-inning work Monday Graveman notched his second hold in a win over the Dodgers on Monday, firing 1.2 perfect innings during which he recorded two strikeouts.
Impact The right-hander went back into a setup role in the one-run win after successfully converting a pair of save opportunities late last week. Manager Scott Servais appears willing to occasionally interchange the roles of Graveman and offseason acquisition Rafael Montero, who's struggled at times but was successful Monday with his ninth-inning assignment versus the Dodgers.

Converts second save Graveman threw a clean seventh inning while striking out one to earn the save in game one of the team's doubleheader Thursday against the Orioles.
Impact Rafael Montero pitched the sixth inning in a setup role, with Graveman coming on to pitch in the final frame. He was effective in preserving the lead and didn't allow a baserunner. Graveman now has each of the team's last two saves -- the first coming after Montero blew an opportunity -- so it appears that he has at least a share of the closer role in Seattle.

Notches first career save Graveman picked up the first save of his career in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Orioles, tossing a perfect eighth inning in a 4-3 victory.
Impact Rafael Montero got the call in the seventh to protect a 3-2 lead but blew his third save of the season, setting the stage for Gravemen to get the job done after Seattle reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth. The right-hander hasn't given up a run this year in five innings over four appearances with a 5:2 K:BB, and with Montero having trouble in high-pressure spots, Gravemen could begin to see more save chances moving forward.

Virtually unhittable early Graveman, who recorded his first win of the season Saturday against the Twins, has allowed just one hit and has yet to be scored upon over the four innings covering his first three...
Impact The starter-turned-reliever has been a force in the later innings out of the bullpen, and Saturday, he qualified for the decision after he fired a quick seven-pitch perfect ninth inning and then saw Mitch Haniger put the Mariners ahead for good with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly. The veteran's velocity has impressively ticked up in recent seasons, and with new closer Rafael Montero already blowing two of his first three save chances, there may eventually be an opportunity for Graveman to see some ninth-inning work.

Stellar in hold situation Graveman was credited with his first hold in a win over the Giants on Saturday, recording five strikeouts over two hitless innings. He did not issue any walks but did hit a batter.
Impact The veteran right-hander was locked in during his 2021 regular-season debut, throwing first-pitch strikes to five of the seven hitters he faced and getting seven swinging strikes as well. The former starter's ability to work multiple innings out of the bullpen as he did Saturday is expected to be a valuable commodity throughout the season, and Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports manager Scott Servais was already raving about what he was able to get from Graveman in his first appearance. "Just unbelievable," Servais said. "The stuff was awesome. ... Phenomenal. If we continue to get those kind of efforts out of Gravey -- he emptied the tank in that second inning, we knew we were probably going to stretch him a little bit tonight, and he was throwing the ball so well."

Likely top alternate closer option Graveman is the likeliest next man up for closing opportunities if Rafael Montero falters in the ninth-inning role, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact Graveman is presently producing some of the highest velocity readings of his career and got his feet wet in the bullpen last season, where he'll also open 2021. The veteran right-hander is projected primarily for eighth-inning duty to start the campaign, but his overall experience and ability to miss bats make him a potentially strong candidate for the highest-leverage scenarios if Montero doesn't prove to be consistently up to the task.

Puts together inconsistent spring Graveman owns a 6.52 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and .324 BAA across 9.2 innings over eight Cactus League appearances.
Impact The veteran right-hander snapped out of a two-appearance skid with a solid one-inning scoreless outing against the Padres on Friday, but Graveman was never able to truly hit his stride for very long this spring. The 30-year-old allowed multiple earned runs in two trips to the mound, and he was scored upon once in another appearance while also occasionally running into control issues (four walks). Graveman did post five holds last season after transitioning to the bullpen and flashed a high 90s fastball this spring, so there's certainly hope for him to eventually settle in as a possible eighth-inning option behind closer Rafael Montero.

High-leverage opportunities on tap Graveman is one of the relievers the Mariners plan to utilize in "the highest-leverage innings" of games this coming season, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact The versatile veteran's career has hit several rough patches over the last three seasons in the form of a 2018 Tommy John surgery that led to a missed 2019 and a benign spinal tumor that caused him to miss part of the 2020 campaign. Graveman finally rediscovered his stride when he returned as a reliever late last season, with his fastball velocity even ticking up to career-high levels (96-97 mph). That heater is part of what makes him a potentially effective late-inning asset again this season, and it worked well for him through his first two scoreless Cactus League appearances before he allowed four earned runs on four hits and a walk over an inning in his third outing Wednesday.

Remains with Mariners Graveman signed a one-year major-league contract with the Mariners on Thursday.
Impact The Mariners declined Graveman's $3.5 million team option Wednesday, though their objection was evidently to the price, not the player. Graveman will remain in Seattle in 2021 but will make $1.25 million, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, with an additional $2.5 million in incentives. The 29-year-old righty made two starts and nine relief appearances last season, posting a 5.79 ERA.

Becomes free agent Graveman's contract option was declined by the Mariners on Wednesday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Impact Graveman began the season as a starter but transitioned to the bullpen after returning from a neck issue in September. The right-hander is open to remaining in a relief role in 2021, and the Mariners have expressed interest in bringing him back with a revised deal. Graveman posted a 5.79 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 18.2 innings this season.

Open to continuing as reliever Graveman, who earned his first victory of the season with a relief win over the Athletics in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday, is receptive to continuing to operate out of the bul...
Impact The veteran right-hander has proven highly resilient, as he opened the season as a starter after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery. The benign tumor was then discovered just two starts into the 2020 campaign, and after some recovery time and assurances from doctors he couldn't do any further damage by continuing to pitch shorter outings, Graveman reinvented himself as a reliever and posted six scoreless efforts in eight appearances. The Mariners have a $3.5 million team option on Graveman for 2021, and he's slated to meet with manager Scott Servais, pitching coach Pete Woodworth and general manager Jerry Dipoto to help determine his future shortly after the season concludes Sunday.
