Astros visit the Twins to open 3-game series
The Minnesota Twins start a three-game series at home against the Houston Astros on Friday
APRIL 7, 2023
•
Associated Press
Now set to pitch Friday
Urquidy's next start will come Friday in Minnesota after Thursday's game was postponed due to impending inclement weather.
Impact
There's a threat of snow for Thursday in Minneapolis, so the Twins' home opener will be pushed back a day. Urquidy is slated to square off against Sonny Gray.

Lasts just four frames
Urquidy stuck out five batters in four innings Saturday against the White Sox but gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact
The long ball was a problem for Urquidy, as he gave up a solo shot to Yoan Moncada in the second inning and a two-run homer to Seby Zavala in the fourth. He was able to finish that frame but didn't come out for the fifth. The lefty doesn't keep the ball on the ground well, so homers could continue to be an issue, as his 1.51 career HR/9 indicates. He'll try to keep the ball in the park Thursday against the Twins in his next start.

Houston Astros host the Chicago White Sox Saturday

Confirmed for Saturday start
Urquidy will start Saturday's game against the White Sox, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
As expected, Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier will get the ball for the first two games of the series, and Urquidy will start Saturday with Luis Garcia pitching the series finale against Chicago. The right-hander finished 2022 with a 13-8 record, 3.94 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 164.1 innings with a 1.17 WHIP over 29 appearances. Urquidy won't miss enough bats to be a stalwart, but he should throw enough strikes while limiting hard contact to be a solid option for 2023.

Hoping to stick in rotation
Urquidy is hoping to remain in the Astros' rotation for the entire 2023 season, Michael Shapiro of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Urquidy pitched out of Houston's rotation for the majority of the 2022 season but was demoted to a relief role in the final days of the campaign and into the postseason. His overall numbers were plenty respectable, as he recorded a 3.94 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 164.1 frames, though the Astros boasted plenty of rotation depth at the time. If Hunter Brown proves reliable and Lance McCullers (forearm) can return to full health early in the season, Urquidy could be challenged for his role again. However, he'll be locked into the rotation to begin the new campaign.

Settles with Houston
Urquidy agreed to a one-year, $3.025 million contract with the Astros on Friday to avoid arbitration, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
It's the first year of arbitration eligibility for Urquidy, and he's coming off a 2022 campaign during which he had a 3.94 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 134:38 K:BB over 164.1 innings. The 27-year-old will open 2023 with a firm spot at the back end of Houston's starting rotation following the departure of Justin Verlander in free agency.

Moving to bullpen
Urquidy will move to the bullpen for the rest of the season, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
The Astros have upwards of seven deserving starting pitchers on the big-league roster, and with six games left this season, Urquidy will transition to relief. He wouldn't have been a part of the postseason starting rotation, so this gives him time to get accustomed to his role going forward. Framber Valdez would be on schedule to pitch the final game of the season, but the Astros could also start Hunter Brown if they want to save Valdez for the playoffs.

Receives no run support
Urquidy (13-8) yielded one run on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday. He struck out six and took a loss against the Orioles.
Impact
Urquidy bounced back after a pair of disappointing outings but he was outdueled by Dean Kremer, who fired a shutout against the Astros. The 27-year-old right-hander has been tagged with 13 runs over his last three starts while taking a loss in each one. He's now sporting a 3.88 ERA with a 133:36 K:BB through 162.1 frames. Urquidy is expected to face the Rays at home next week.

Pounded for six runs
Urquidy (13-7) gave up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings to take the loss in an 8-5 defeat against the Athletics on Saturday.
Impact
Urquidy faltered in what looked on paper like a favorable matchup against one of the weakest lineups in baseball. The bulk of the damage came on a pair or home runs off the bats of Seth Brown and Chad Pinder. Urquidy has now had two rough outings in a row. He has given up 12 runs over his past two starts to raise his ERA from 3.51 to 3.96. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to reverse this troubling trend his next time out against the Orioles.

Earns 12th win
Urquidy (12-4) yielded two runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over Atlanta.
Impact
Urquidy coughed up a two-run shot to Matt Olson in the first inning before firing six scoreless frames. The 27-year-old has allowed fewer than three runs in five of his last six starts, posting a 2.52 ERA during that span. He lowered his season ERA to 3.63 alongside a 104:28 K:BB through 134 frames. Urquidy is projected to at home against the Orioles next weekend.
