Houston's Altuve doing well after positive COVID-19 test

Houston second baseman Jose Altuve says he tested positive for COVID-19 but he never felt bad and hopes to return to the lineup soon

Confirms previous positive test Altuve confirmed Saturday that he had tested positive for COVID-19, but he now feels good, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Impact Altuve was one of five players the Astros placed on the COVID-19 injured list last week, but the second baseman was the only one to test positive for the virus. However, the 30-year-old was cleared to work out with his teammates Friday since he has now cleared the league's health and safety protocols. Altuve said Saturday that he isn't sure when he'll be cleared to return to game action, but he thinks that it will be "pretty soon," Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.

Impact Altuve has been away from the team for over a week while on the COVID-19 injured list. He worked out on the field prior to Friday's game against the Angels but needs a few more days to get back in game shape before being activated.

May return over weekend Astros manager Dusty Baker said Altuve (COVID-19 injured list) could be activated at some point this weekend or early next week, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Only one of the five Astros placed on the COVID-19 injured list last week is known to have tested positive for the virus, and reading between the lines, that player appears to have been Altuve. The 30-year-old is only member of the quintet not to have been activated, after all of Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, Martin Maldonado and Robel Garcia were reinstated from the IL on Tuesday. Fortunately for Altuve, he seems to be making positive progress in his recovery, given that Baker has suggested the second baseman's return is on the horizon. Altuve was thriving as the Astros' leadoff man prior to his shutdown, slashing .318/.380/.455 with a home run, 11 runs and five RBI over his first 11 starts.

Impact Of the five players Houston placed on the COVID-19 IL on April 14, Altuve looks to be the only member of the group that won't be available for the start of the series in Colorado. Meanwhile, Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, Martin Maldonado and Robel Garcia will fly to Denver on Monday, and all should be reinstated from the IL ahead of Tuesday's series opener if they continue to pass all subsequent COVID-19 intake testing. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported April 15 that only one member of the Astros quintet was known to have tested positive for the virus, and given that MLB protocols require positive players to isolate for a minimum of 10 days, Altuve would seem to be the infected individual. If that's the case, Altuve likely won't be available until the Astros' weekend series with the Angels at the earliest.

Impact Altuve and the other four Astros placed on the COVID-19 IL on Wednesday all appear to have finished their respective quarantine periods, but Baker didn't specify when any of the players might be ready to rejoin the team. Since Baker previously mentioned that the five players in question are unlikely to be available for the team's ongoing road trip, Altuve's earliest possible return date would most likely be Thursday, when the Astros host the Angels.
