Impact Severino hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning off Jonathan Loaisiga. It was his first home run of the season. Severino has gotten the majority of the playing time behind the dish for the Orioles to start the campaign, and he's now reached base in five of his first 15 plate appearances.

Impact Loaisiga threw 51 pitches, which fell in line with pre-game expectations. The only notable blemish on his outing was a solo home run he surrendered to Trea Turner in the third frame. Regardless of whether Loaisiga is starting contests or working as a multi-inning reliever, it's unlikely that he'll far surpass Sunday's workload as he has not exceeded four innings pitched in an outing since the middle of the 2018 campaign.

Impact Masahiro Tanaka is slated to be the Yankees' No. 3 starter this season, but the team is opting for a bullpen game in place of his first start while the right-hander recovers from a concussion suffered July 4. Michael King and Chad Green are other options to open against Washington, but none of the three are likely to go deep into the game, and the need for an opener could be limited to one turn with Tanaka possibly returning to the rotation as early as July 31.

Impact Loaisiga had been considered for a starting role throughout both spring training and summer camp, but the team ultimately decided that he is best suited for a bullpen spot to begin the season. The right-hander indicated a willingness to take on any role the Yankees need of him, stating through a translator, "It's about getting in the game and doing your job. If I'm going to start the game, I'm fine with that. If I'm going to go into the middle of the game, no problem with me. If I have to end the game, I'm cool with that. I just want to pitch, help and just go do my job." Loaisiga looked good in intrasquad action Wednesday, hurling three scoreless and hitless innings while striking out four batters.
