Stumbles in return to rotation
Odorizzi didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 7-6 win over the Royals, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three.
Impact
Making his first start since May 16, Odorizzi looked rusty, tossing 58 of 90 pitches for strikes and allowing runs in each of the first three innings before he managed to actually escape a jam unscathed in the fourth. Houston will likely give the right-hander another couple turns to let him get comfortable again, but if Odorizzi continues to struggle, he may have to work things out in the bullpen while the Astros go back to a five-man rotation.

Activated prior to start
Odorizzi (lower leg) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Monday's start against the Royals.
Impact
Odorizzi was out since mid-May due to strains and sprains to ligaments in his right foot and ankle, but he recently made a pair of rehab starts and posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in eight innings. The Astros will roll with a six-man rotation this week now that Odorizzi is available, and he should be able to handle a relatively full workload Monday since he tossed 78 pitches during his most recent rehab start.

Starting Monday
Odorizzi (lower leg) will start Monday's game against the Royals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Astros will utilize a six-man rotation this week with Odorizzi returning to action, while Justin Verlander will be pushed back to start Thursday to manage his workload. Odorizzi recently made a pair of rehab starts and posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while striking out 10 in eight innings.

Could return as sixth starter
Astros manager Dusty Baker hinted Saturday that Odorizzi (lower leg) could be part of a six-man rotation if the right-hander returns from the 15-day injured list during the upcomin...
Impact
While Odorizzi has been sidelined since mid-May with strains and sprains to the ligaments of his right foot and ankle, Cristian Javier has stepped into the Houston rotation. Javier appears to have solidified himself as a full-time member of the rotation after allowing just one hit and striking out 27 over 14 innings between his past two starts, but Odorizzi doesn't look as though he'll be on the outs for a starting role. The 32-year-old fared well in his second rehab start Wednesday at Double-A Corpus Christi, striking out six over five scoreless frames while allowing three hits and no walks. He tossed 78 pitches in that outing, so he should be stretched out enough to make his return to the Houston rotation at some point during the four-game home series with Kansas City that begins Monday.

Set for second rehab start
Odorizzi (lower leg) is scheduled to make his second rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Corpus Christi, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Odorizzi will drop down to the Double-A level after he made his first rehab start last week at Triple-A Sugar Land. He worked three innings for Sugar Land in his first game action since suffering the left leg injury during his May 16 start with Houston, striking out four while allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks. Depending how deep into Wednesday's start Odorizzi goes and how well he performs, he could be cleared to return from the 15-day injured list next week. It's unclear if the Astros plan on immediately reinserting Odorizzi into the rotation upon his activation, but Jose Urquidy would likely be most at risk of moving to the bullpen or heading to the minors if Odorizzi is brought back as a starter.

Gearing up for rehab assignment
Odorizzi (lower leg) said he'll begin a rehab assignment Friday at Triple-A Sugar Land that will likely consist of two starts, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Odorizzi declared himself ready for game action after he tested out his left foot/ankle injury Tuesday, when he threw a bullpen session and took part in fielding drills on the mound. Assuming the Astros intend to bring Odorizzi back in a starting role and he sticks to the schedule of two rehab outings, he'll tentatively line up to rejoin the Houston rotation as soon as July 4. Cristian Javier or Jose Urquidy are the most likely candidates to lose out on a spot in the rotation once Odorizzi is activated from the 15-day injured list.

Increasing fielding intensity
Odorizzi (leg) continues to throw bullpen sessions and is fielding at increased intensity, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Odorizzi has been throwing bullpens consistently since late May, though the last step in his recovery appears to be his ability to field the position at full speed. With his activity ramping up further, Odorizzi is nearing a rehab assignment, and he could be in line for a return in late June or early July.
