Joins big-league club
Burger was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
Impact
The 25-year-old will receive his first taste of the majors while Yoan Moncada deals with a bruised hand. Moncada hasn't been placed on the injured list but isn't expected to play this weekend, so Burger should see plenty of opportunities between third base and designated hitter since the scuffling Yermin Mercedes was sent to Triple-A. Burger has been impressive during his first Triple-A campaign this year, hitting .322/.368/.596 with 10 homers, 15 doubles, 36 RBI and 29 runs in 42 games.

Likely headed to Chicago
Burger is expected to be recalled by the White Sox for the team's weekend series against Detroit, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Burger would be recalled to provide infield depth and potentially start at third base in the absence of Yoan Moncada (hand). The 25-year-old overcame a torn Achilles that required two surgeries and cost him both the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. Through 185 plate appearances with Triple-A Charlotte this season, Burger has maintained a 149 wRC+ with a .275 ISO.

Swats first Triple-A homer
Burger (quadriceps) went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI for Triple-A Charlotte in its 12-9 loss to Gwinnett.
Impact
Burger was sidelined for a few days after suffering a quad strain in Charlotte's season opener, but the third baseman has now appeared in two games for the affiliate. He celebrated his return to action in style Sunday, taking Atlanta pitching prospect Kyle Muller deep in the first inning for his first home run at the Triple-A level and his first in affiliated ball since 2017. Burger previously missed the entire 2018 and 2019 seasons after tearing his Achilles tendon and requiring surgery on two separate occasions, and he didn't play in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor-league season.

Dealing with quad strain
Burger exited Tuesday's Triple-A season opener with a mild quad strain, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact
Burger started at third base Wednesday and went 0-for-3 with a run to begin the game. Although he left the game with a quad issue, the injury is believed to be minor, and it's unlikely that the 25-year-old will face a long-term absence.

Sent to Double-A
Burger was optioned to Double-A Birmingham on Tuesday.
Impact
Manager Tony La Russa mentioned the 24-year-old as a potential candidate for designated hitter early in camp, but he always faced long odds of cracking the Opening Day roster. Burger received some reps in an independent league last season and hasn't seen game action in affiliated ball since 2017 due to Achilles issues. He had a .271/.335/.409 slash line with four home runs, nine doubles and 27 RBI in 47 games at Low-A before the injury in 2017.

Starts at 3B
Burger started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Sunday's spring game against the Brewers.
Impact
This was Burger's first game action since Feb. 2018, when he ruptured his left Achilles. The 2017 first-round draft pick then missed 2019 with a second Achilles injury and didn't play during 2020. Burger filled in at third base for Yoan Moncada (arm) and is reportedly in the mix for designated hitter, though it would seem he needs work in the minors after a three-year layoff.

Mentioned as DH candidate
Burger was listed by manager Tony La Russa as a potential designated hitter this season, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact
Andrew Vaughn is considered the favorite for the job, but Burger also has some prospect pedigree himself. He hit .271/.335/.409 at the Low-A level in 2017 after being taken 11th overall in that year's draft, but Achilles issues wiped out his next two seasons. With the minor leagues canceled last year, he was forced to join an independent league to get some at-bats. His lack of high-level minors experience means he's probably a long shot at best to crack the Opening Day squad, but he's on the team's 40-man roster so it might not be too long before he gets his shot.
