Beginning 2025 in minors Davis was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Impact Davis seemed to have the inside track to the backup catcher job for much of spring, and he performed adequately by collecting nine hits across 36 at-bats with four extra-base knocks. However, Endy Rodriguez was even more impressive and has secured a roster spot to begin the season. The Pirates presumably would still like to see Davis make an impact in 2025, so he should make his way to Pittsburgh at some point.

He has a .238 ISO across 23 plate appearances to show for it, though he's also struck out at a 26.1 percent clip. Joey Bart will begin the season as the starter behind the plate, but Davis would potentially start a few times per week if he cracks the roster.

Healthy for spring Davis (hand) was spotted taking batting practice Thursday during the Pirates' second workout of spring training, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact Davis appears to have reported to camp without any restrictions after finishing the 2024 season on the injured list due to left hand inflammation. Even before being shut down with the hand injury, Davis had endured a rough second season at the big-league level, slashing just .144/.242/.212 with a 37.2 percent strikeout rate in 121 plate appearances while allowing Joey Bart to emerge as the team's top backstop. Davis fared much better over his extended playing time at Triple-A Indianapolis (.952 OPS in 253 plate appearances), and since the Pirates are already confident in his defense behind the plate, he'll get another chance this spring to stake his claim to the No. 1 catching gig with the big club. Bart will open the spring as the frontrunner for the job, and Davis will also face competition from Endy Rodriguez, who is healthy again after missing nearly all of the 2024 season while recovering from elbow surgery.

Out with hand injury The Pirates placed Davis on the 10-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to Sept. 5, due to left hand inflammation, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact It's unclear when exactly Davis suffered the injury, but he hasn't seen the field since going 0-for-3 with a strikeout Wednesday against the Cubs. Joey Bart and Yasmani Grandal will continue to split catching duties for the Pirates.

Impact Davis will receive another opportunity as a result of Joey Bart (hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list. The 24-year-old has managed a .503 OPS in 29 games in the majors this season but had been hitting well of late with Indianapolis with a .939 OPS and a couple of home runs over his last 12 contests. Davis should share catching responsibilities with Yasmani Grandal while Bart is sidelined.

Impact Davis will return to the major-league roster for the first time since mid-June after producing a .301 average with six home runs, 26 RBI, 25 runs scored and seven stolen bases since his demotion. The 24-year-old will replace Joey Bart (hamstring) in a timeshare at catcher with Yasmani Grandal after Bart is officially placed on the 10-day injured list Monday.

Activated and optioned The Pirates reinstated Davis (concussion) from the 7-day injured list Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Impact Davis had made the last three of his five rehab appearances at Indianapolis, so he'll stick around with the affiliate since the Pirates didn't have a spot for him on the 26-man active roster. Joey Bart will continue to serve as the top backup to No. 1 catcher Yasmani Grandal, though with Grandal on an expiring contract and having mustered a lowly .511 OPS over 128 plate appearances on the season, it wouldn't be surprising if he was eventually designated for assignment to make room for Perez at some point after the All-Star break.

Impact Davis was pulled off a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona this past weekend after he experienced recurring concussion symptoms. However, he's evidently passed the necessary protocols and will resume things in Indianapolis. Davis could be ready for activation soon if he can avoid another setback, but he's not a given to return to the big-league roster at that time.

Impact Davis has been on the 7-day concussion IL since June 15, and Wednesday will be the first time he's played in any sort of game since then. The Pirates haven't indicated how long the 24-year-old's assignment might last, though it's possible he remains in the minors upon being activated after slashing just .153/.267/.235 across 101 major-league plate appearances this season.
