INJURIES

Takes loss Saturday Neris (1-3) took the loss Saturday as the Phillies fell 5-4 to the Mets, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one in an inning of relief.
Impact Called on with the score tied 4-4 in the top of the ninth, the Phillies' closer served up a solo shot to Michael Conforto on the second pitch he threw. Neris has seen a heavy workload so far, appearing in 14 of the team's first 27 games, and he was pitching for the third time in four days Saturday. Despite the setback, he still carries a 2.13 ERA and 15:3 K:BB through 12.2 innings while converting 5-of-6 save chances to begin the year.

Secures another save Neris did not allow a baserunner and struck out one to earn the save Wednesday.
Impact Neris made quick work of the Cardinals, as he required only nine pitches to set down the side and record his fifth save. He's been excellent from both a results and skills perspective early on this season and is locked into save chances for the time being.

Picks up fourth save Neris allowed one hit and a run while earning a save over the Phillies on Monday.
Impact Neris came into the game with a runner already on first so he wasn't charged with the run that scored on Dylan Carlson's groundout. He's now 4-for-5 in save chances with a 1.86 ERA over 9.2 innings this season.

Records save Neris earned his third save of the season Saturday against the Rockies after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and fanning one.
Impact Neris entered the game with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and didn't have major problems closing things out, tossing nine of his 11 pitches for strikes. Neris allowed a triple to Garrett Hampson with one out, but he struck out Dom Nunez and sealed the game with a Sam Hilliard pop out to end the threat. The 31-year-old right-hander has gone 3-for-4 in save opportunities this season.

Charged with loss Neris (1-2) took the loss Friday against the Rockies, surrendering a home run and registering a strikeout while only securing one out.
Impact Neris entered a tie ballgame in the bottom of the ninth inning. He was able to retire the first batter, but promptly served up a walk-off home run to Raimel Tapia. Through the 2021 campaign, the 31-year-old owns a 2.35 ERA with 10 strikeouts across 7.2 innings. With Archie Bradley (oblique) on the 10-day injured list, Neris should continue to see plenty of late-inning work and save opportunities.

Picks up first victory Neris (1-1) earned the win Wednesday versus the Giants after recording two strikeouts and not allowing a baserunner during the ninth inning.
Impact The 31-year-old entered for the top of the ninth inning amid a 5-5 tie and retired the side in order, putting him on track for the victory when Andrew Knapp walked off the Giants during the bottom of the frame. Neris has converted two of three save chances and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with a 9:3 K:BB across 7.1 innings this season.

Impact The Phillies took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the bad version of Neris showed up in the bottom half of the frame. The right-hander threw only 13 of 22 pitches for strikes, eventually serving up a bases-loaded walkoff single to Jonathan Villar. Neris hadn't allowed a run in five appearances coming into Tuesday, and on the season he still sports a 1.69 ERA and 5:3 K:BB through six innings.

Locks up save No. 2 Neris went 1-2-3 in the ninth to record his second save of the season in a 7-6 win over the Braves on Sunday.
Impact Neris did not have an easy task to close out the game with Pablo Sandoval, Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies stepping up to the plate. The 31-year-old was able to retire all three hitters on just 10 pitches as he helped the Phillies avoid a sweep to the Braves. Neris has yet to allow a run in four appearances and has converted both of his save chances on the year so far.

Phillies Notebook: Even with remade bullpen, Joe Girardi keeps Hector Neris as closer Before the Phillies' first 2021 game, Joe Girardi made his first bullpen call.
MARCH 31, 2021 • DELCOTIMES.COM
Confirmed as closer Manager Joe Girardi said Neris would open the season as the Phillies' closer, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
Impact After posting a 14:0 K:BB while allowing just five hits in 9.2 innings this spring, Neris was awarded the job over Archie Bradley and Jose Alvarado, who Girardi confirmed would be the Phillies' top right-handed and left-handed setup man, respectively. Though Neris has converted 70 of his 87 save chances (80.5 percent) over the past four seasons, an inability to consistently keep the ball in the yard has prevented him from building up much job security. With two high-quality options in Bradley and Alvarado waiting in the wings, Neris will likely need to avoid blowups early on in April and May to ensure he finishes the season as the Phillies' top option for saves.
MARCH 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Working on slider Neris worked on a slider over the offseason and has been trying it out in spring games, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Impact Neris threw a slider infrequently earlier in his career, last using it in in 2017. His profile is led by a splitter that can be a dominant pitch at times, but he may need something more after a disappointing season that saw him struggle to a 4.57 ERA and a career-worst 12.6 percent walk rate. There's no guarantee the reborn slider will have the desired effect, but there's at least a chance it helps him get back to being the guy who posted a 3.23 ERA from 2016 to 2019. He currently looks to be locked into a tight race with Archie Bradley for the Phillies' closer job, with the team yet to offer much clarity about the situation.
MARCH 9, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Role for 2021 not yet defined Neris' role in Philadelphia's bullpen is uncertain heading into the 2021 season, Kerry Kauffman of Fansided reports.
Impact Neris was brought back by the Phillies on a one-year deal following a disappointing 2020 campaign, accruing a 4.57 ERA and 1.71 WHIP with a 27:13 K:BB across 21.2 frames. He secured five saves and finished with three blown saves. While Neris appears to be firmly in the mix for save chances to open the year, Philadelphia's signing of Archie Bradley gives the team more options at the back end of the bullpen, as Bradley has collected 24 total saves over the last two seasons. The closer's role in Philly will be something to keep a close eye on as spring training continues.
