Heads to Houston Neris signed a two-year, $17 million deal with the Astros on Saturday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Impact Neris was perhaps miscast as a closer during his eight years in Philadelphia, and he probably won't add significantly to his 84 career saves with his new team unless Ryan Pressly gets injured. That said, he has a lot to offer as a setup man and doesn't appear to be slowing down as he heads into his age-33 season. He finished 2021 with a 3.63 ERA in 74.1 innings, with a strong 31.6 percent strikeout rate and above-average 47.1 percent groundball rate offsetting a 10.3 percent walk rate.

Impact It was far from a pretty performance, but Neris was able to settle things down after Cam Bedrosian allowed Pittsburgh to briefly take the lead in the seventh inning. Through 13.1 innings in September, Neris has given up four runs on nine hits and three walks with 18 strikeouts. The right-hander has a 3.33 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 91:28 K:BB across 70.1 innings overall while adding 12 saves and 11 holds in a high-leverage role.

Impact The right-hander allowed a single to Elias Diaz and a home run to Garrett Hampson in the seventh inning, and Philadelphia wasn't able to recover from it. Neris saw his 10.1-inning scoreless streak come to a close -- during that span, he allowed five hits and four walks while striking out 17. Impact Ranger Suarez has been used in save situations recently, but he had pitched on each of the last two days and was charged with a blown save Saturday. Impact The Phillies took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning and manager Joe Girardi turned to Neris rather than Jose Alvarado to close the door. Instead, Rhys Hoskins committed a fielding error to put the leadoff man aboard and the right-hander fell apart, walking in the tying run before a Michael Conforto sacrifice fly ended it. Alvarado blew a save attempt Friday after Girardi had suggested the southpaw was now the team's top option in the ninth, and until someone else in the Phillies bullpen shows they can get the job done consistently, Neris will likely remain in the closer mix despite going 11-for-17 on save chances this season.
