Royals rally past White Sox for wild 4-3 win in 10 innings

Woeful outing Wednesday
Holland (0-1) gave up two runs on three hits and a walk while fanning one in just one-third of an inning Wednesday against the Indians. He was tagged with the loss.
Impact
Holland was absolutely dreadful Wednesday, as four of the first five batters he faced reached base and that resulted in him being lifted before facing Josh Naylor. Holland has given up three runs (two earned) in one inning of work across his first two appearances of the season, and while he is enduring a slow start to the season, he remains the favorite to take the mound on save opportunities going forward.

Settles for hold Thursday
Holland allowed an unearned run on a hit and two walks and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning in Thursday's 14-10 win over the Rangers. He earned a hold.
Impact
Holland is the favorite for saves in Kansas City, but he wasn't very efficient Thursday. He entered with two outs in the eighth inning and struck out Leody Taveras. Holland then made things interesting with a messy start to the ninth. A passed ball and a wild pitch allowed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to score, and Joey Gallo walked before Holland was replaced by Wade Davis, who struck out the last two batters. Holland was excellent with six saves, two holds, a 1.91 ERA and 0.95 WHIP across 28.1 innings last season. He'll need to display better command next time out, or Davis, Scott Barlow or Josh Staumont could figure into the closing conversation.

Smooth start to spring
Holland has looked good to start spring, striking out five and walking none through three hitless, scoreless innings.
Impact
Holland stepped into the closer role last season after Trevor Rosenthal was traded to the Padres, finishing with six saves. He appears set to remain in that role heading into the upcoming season, though he'll have to pitch well to keep the job. His seniority and the experience that comes with his 212 career saves will give him a bit of leeway, but if he looks like the guy who posted ERAs above 4.50 in 2018 and 2019, he could face a challenge from Scott Barlow or Josh Staumont, both of whom possess better strikeout stuff than Holland does at this point in his career.

Placed on injured list
Holland (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain Friday.
Impact
Holland suffered his oblique injury while warming up to enter the game Thursday, and he'll be sidelined for the final three games of the regular season as a result. Ian Kennedy was called up in a corresponding move, but Scott Barlow and Josh Staumont could be candidates to serve as the closer over the final series of the year. During his return to the Royals this year, Holland posted a 1.91 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 28.1 innings.

Dealing with oblique injury
Holland did not pitch in Thursday's win over the Tigers because of a right oblique injury, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The right-hander was warming up to enter the game when the oblique issue flared up. The extent of the injury is not yet known, but given the nature of most oblique issues, his season could very well be over.

Notches sixth save
Holland allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning Monday, earning a save in the win over St. Louis.
Impact
Holland allowed a leadoff single to Yadier Molina but made quick work of the next three batters, needing just 10 pitches to retire the 6-7-8 hitters. The 34-year-old picked up his sixth save of the season and his first in over a week. Holland now owns a strong 1.91 ERA in 28.1 innings.

Three saves in four days
Holland struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Saturday against the Pirates to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Impact
Holland now has three saves and a win in the last five days, and is likely going to win some fantasy leagues for people down the stretch. He has pitched in four of the last five days and each of the last two, so he is likely unavailable Sunday.
