Plans to make six more rehab starts Perez (elbow) said the plan is to make a total of eight rehab starts in his continued recovery from Tommy John surgery, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact Perez has made two starts at Single-A Jupiter already and will throw one more before making his final five with Triple-A Jacksonville. He's following a typical starter schedule of pitching every five days. In two starts at Single-A, Perez has thrown a total of 2.2 innings, allowing one hit while striking out four and walking one. Perez's fastball has hit 98-plus MPH. With six more rehab starts to come, Perez appears likely to return to the mound for the Marlins in early-June.
MAY 2, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Hits 98 mph in first rehab start Perez (elbow) completed his first minor-league rehab start Saturday with Single-A Jupiter, striking out two and allowing one hit over a scoreless inning.
Impact Making his first appearance in a competitive setting since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024, Perez pumped in 11 of his 19 pitches for strikes and sported a fastball that topped out at 98.4 miles per hour. While the velocity readings are encouraging for Perez, he'll still need to prove that he can effectively command his offerings while upping his pitch count over the course of a few more rehab starts before the Marlins bring him back from the 60-day injured list. The Marlins will likely keep Perez in the minors until his 30-day rehab window ends May 25, and if all checks out well during his assignment, he could be activated May 26 when first eligible.
APRIL 28, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Starting rehab assignment Saturday Perez (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Jupiter on Saturday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Marlins manager Clayton McCullough indicated last week that Perez was about a month away from rehab games, but evidently that timetable has been moved up. Perez will likely need all of the allotted 30 days on his rehab assignment, which would set him up for a season debut in late May. The 22-year-old right-hander is coming back from April 2024 Tommy John surgery.
APRIL 25, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
One month away from rehab games Marlins manager Clayton McCullough indicated Wednesday that Perez (elbow) is about a month away from beginning a rehab assignment, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.
Impact Perez faced hitters Wednesday, throwing 45 pitches with three "up-downs." Everything appears to be progressing as scheduled from April 2024 Tommy John surgery for Perez, and it sounds like a plan for rehab games will be mapped out in the not-too-distant future. If Perez does indeed begin a rehab assignment around mid-May, that would likely put him on pace for a season debut in mid-June.
APRIL 16, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Ready to face hitters Perez (elbow) is scheduled to face hitters Tuesday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports.
Impact The activity represents a step forward in the recovery process for Perez, who had previously been limited to throwing bullpen sessions as he works his way back from his April 2024 Tommy John surgery. Perez will likely face hitters in a controlled setting for the next few weeks before the Marlins eventually map out a rehab assignment for the young right-hander. He could be ready to make his 2025 debut with the big club at some point around the All-Star break.
MARCH 31, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Goes on 60-day IL The Marlins placed Perez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Impact The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Seth Martinez, who has been claimed off waivers. Perez has been throwing off a mound and doing well as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but he is not expected to join the Marlins' rotation until around midseason.
FEBRUARY 20, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Throwing bullpens Perez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, working in his changeup along with fastballs, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact The young right-hander is aiming to rejoin the Marlins' rotation around the All-Star break after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. "I'll say I feel very good right now," Perez said after Friday's session. "I will say 75 percent, just to put it out there in a number. But we're doing very well, just getting better." Perez began playing catch last September, and so far his recovery is proceeding as planned. In his absence, Valente Bellozo, Max Meyer and Adam Mazur are the leading candidates to fill out the back of Miami's rotation.
FEBRUARY 8, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Aiming to return by All-Star break Perez (elbow) is hoping to rejoin the Marlins' rotation by the All-Star break, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact The 21-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last April, so a July 2025 return would be right on schedule. Perez displayed his considerable upside over 19 starts during his big-league debut in 2023, striking out 108 batters over 91.1 innings en route to a 3.15 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. but a Marlins team that's highly unlikely to be in playoff contention in 2025 won't have much incentive to be aggressive with his recovery timeline.

Begins throwing program Perez (elbow) threw light toss on flat ground Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact Tuesday marks the first time Perez has done any sort of throwing since he underwent Tommy John surgery in April. He obviously has a lot more work to do before he's ready to return to a major-league mound, but it's certainly encouraging to see him making progress in the right direction. The 21-year-old righty is expected to rejoin the Marlins' rotation midway through the 2025 campaign.

Major League Baseball says pitcher injuries are more likely to occur during spring training and early in the season.

MLB rejects pitch clock injuries theory, says spring training or early-season injuries more likely
Throws off mound Perez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Impact Saturday marks the first time Perez has thrown off a mound since experiencing inflammation in his right elbow. He threw 20 pitches during his first session and used his entire arsenal of pitches, and everything seemed to go smoothly. He'll likely require a few more mound sessions before moving onto facing live hitters, and a minor-league rehab assignment should come after that.
MARCH 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Playing long toss Perez (elbow) played catch from 105 feet Friday and mixed in some breaking balls, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Heraldreports.
Impact Perez was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday and continues ramping up his throwing program after being shut down for a bit due to elbow inflammation. The right-hander should continue stretching out his throwing distance before resuming mound work.
MARCH 29, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Exits with more finger issues Perez was pulled from Wednesday's start against the Nationals with an apparent recurrence of the broken nail on his right middle finger, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact The nail has been an ongoing issue for Perez since the beginning of camp. While the potential for a long-term absence seem minimal, it's certainly a concern that the issue continues to linger. The Marlins should have more on Perez's condition following Wednesday's game.
MARCH 13, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Set to pitch Monday Perez (finger) is scheduled to start Monday's spring game against the Cardinals.
Impact The right-hander suffered a laceration on his middle finger during a session of live batting practice Thursday, but it appears that won't affect his availability for his first spring start. Perez is coming off a rookie campaign during which he had a 3.15 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 108:31 K:BB across 91.1 innings, though an innings restriction for 2024 will cap his ceiling a bit after he totaled 128 frames between the majors and minors last year.
FEBRUARY 25, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Out for regular season The Marlins placed Perez on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left SI joint inflammation, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Impact With just over a week left in the regular season, Perez's move to the IL will put an early end to his campaign. The 20-year-old righty will end with a 3.15 ERA and 1.13 WHIP alongside a 108:31 K:BB through 91.1 innings. If the Marlins are able to secure a playoff berth, Perez will be eligible to return prior to the start of the NLDS. Jeff Lindgren was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Takes loss in short start Perez (5-6) completed three innings in a loss to the Mets on Wednesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters.
Impact Perez got through a scoreless first frame before serving up a solo homer to Mark Vientos in the second. New York tacked on two more runs against the right-hander in the third, though one of them was unearned, and Perez didn't return for the fourth inning after having thrown 69 pitches. This was the rookie's shortest start of the campaign outside of a six-run disaster against Atlanta on July 1 during which he recorded only one out, and he hasn't tossed more than five frames in any of his past four appearances. Perez now holds a 3.15 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 108:31 K:BB over 91.1 major-league innings this season.
SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strikes out seven in loss Perez (5-5) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits over 4.2 innings against the Brewers while striking out seven and not issuing any walks.
Impact Perez got off to a solid start, striking out five of the first nine batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff double to William Contreras in the fourth, which would lead to one run coming home for Miami in the frame. The young right-hander would then go on to allow another two runs in the fifth before being relieved by George Soriano, marking the fourth time in his last seven starts that he's failed to make it through five innings. Perez has not won a start since June 25 and currently holds a 5.02 ERA in September to go along with a 16:6 K:BB.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses five in no decision Perez did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings in a 3-2 win over Philadelphia. He struck out four.
Impact A first-inning homer by Trea Turner was the fourth allowed by Perez in his last two outings, but he settled down from there in allowing just one more run over his final four frames. Following tossing 78 innings in 2021 and 77 innings last year in the Marlins' farm system, Perez has now thrown for 120.1 innings this year between Triple-A and the majors, though it's hard to imagine the Marlins will shut him down amid a playoff push. He'll carry a 2.90 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 83.2 big-league innings into his next start, which is scheduled to take place mid-week against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hit hard in no-decision Perez came away with a no-decision in Friday's 8-5 extra-innings win over the Nationals, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
Impact All three runs off the 20-year-old phenom came on solo shots, as Perez served up a leadoff homer to CJ Abrams in the first inning before Lane Thomas and Travis Blankenhorn took him deep in the third. Perez has completed at least five innings only twice in five starts since rejoining the big-league rotation in August, but he's posted a respectable 3.91 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB through 25.1 innings over that stretch. The rookie right-hander will likely make his next start at home next week against the Dodgers.
SEPTEMBER 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans seven in quality start Perez came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Marlins' 3-2 loss to the Nationals, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven...
Impact The rookie right-hander was impressive, generating 14 swinging strikes on only 76 pitches, but he left the mound with the score tied 1-1. Perez has delivered back-to-back quality starts after a couple bumpier outings in his return to the big-league rotation, putting to rest for now any worries the 20-year-old could be tiring -- Perez is up to 110.2 innings this season between Triple-A and the majors, a big jump from his 77 innings in the minors in 2022. Miami will likely try to find extra rest for him down the stretch, but Perez's next outing still lines up for a road series next weekend and a potential rematch with the Nationals.
AUGUST 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strikes out 10 in quality start Perez allowed two hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over six scoreless innings, taking a no-decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Dodgers.
Impact Perez was fairly efficient with 90 pitches (60 strikes) in his third start back from a stint in the minors. The right-hander had allowed four runs in each of his last two outings before Saturday's effort, which was arguably his best of the campaign. The 20-year-old is now at a 2.91 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 83:21 K:BB through 68 innings over 14 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the lowly Nationals next week.
AUGUST 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Pulled after four Perez did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over four innings in a 8-7 victory over the Yankees. He struck out five.
Impact Perez struggled for the second consecutive start since his return from the minors, with the biggest damage coming by way of a two-run home run off the bat of Anthony Volpe in the fourth. A lack of command didn't help Perez, who fell behind against 12 of the 19 batters he faced. Perez' ERA now stands at 3.19 with a 1.15 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 62 innings. He's lined up for a matchup next weekend in LA against the Dodgers.
AUGUST 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Shaky in return Perez (504) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Monday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Reds.
Impact Perez tossed two scoreless frames before the Reds plated a run in the third inning. He later served up back-to-back home runs in the fourth. It was Perez's first MLB outing since July 6 and he was handed his third straight loss. During that stretch, he's allowed 11 runs through 11 frames, raising his season ERA to 2.79. Perez is lined up to face the Yankees at home this weekend.
AUGUST 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Activated ahead of start The Marlins recalled Perez from Double-A Pensacola ahead of his scheduled start Monday in Cincinnati, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Perez is back in the big leagues and will make his first appearance since July 6 after the Marlins elected to stash him in the minors for the past month in an effort to limit his workload in his age-20 campaign. Per McPherson, Perez's start Monday is expected to be one of 10 the Marlins are tentatively planning on having him make over the rest of the season, provided Miami still remains in the thick of playoff contention by late September/early October. After turning a dazzling 2.36 ERA while striking out 61 batters over 53.1 innings over his first 11 big-league starts, Perez looks worthy of an immediate activation this week for any fantasy managers that had been holding him.
AUGUST 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Could make up to 10 more starts The Marlins' plans for Perez the rest of the season would allow him to make up to 10 more starts in the majors, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports.
Impact The team is monitoring the 20-year-old's workload carefully, as he's already thrown more innings this season than he did in either 2022 or 2021, but Perez is set to rejoin Miami's rotation Monday after spending about a month in the minors resting and then ramping back up. Whether he actually makes all 10 starts will depend on his performance, as well as whether the Marlins stay in the wild-card hunt, but those investing in the young phenom can have some confidence that he'll see enough action to move the needle for their fantasy squads. Through his first 11 big-league outings, Perez posted a 2.36 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 61:17 K:BB in 53.1 innings.
