Likely to rejoin big club Monday The Marlins are expected to recall Perez from Double-A Pensacola to have him start Monday in Cincinnati, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Perez was optioned to Double-A shortly before the All-Star break in an effort for the Marlins to manage his workload, but after returning to action July 26 and making two abbreviated starts for Pensacola, he looks ready to rejoin the big-league rotation. Even though he's set to return to Miami, the 20-year-old right-hander will likely have some starts skipped and could transition to a relief role at some point. As long as he's a member of the rotation, however, he'll still worthy of a speculative pickup in any leagues where he may have been dropped. Perez turned in a 2.36 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 61:17 K:BB in 53.1 innings through his first 11 big-league starts prior to being sent out to Double-A.

Makes abbreviated start at Double-A Perez made a start for Double-A Pensacola last Wednesday, tossing 2.1 innings and striking out five while allowing two runs (one earned) in a 4-3 win over Mississippi. According to...
Impact The Marlins sent Perez back to the minors shortly before the All-Star break, despite the fact that he had arguably been Miami's top starter through his first 11 big-league outings (2.36 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 61:17 K:BB in 53.1 innings). The demotion was designed to better manage the 20-year-old's innings count, which now sits at 86.2 for the season between the majors and minors. Considering Perez's youth and long-term importance to the organization as well as the fact that he never threw more than 78 innings in any of his previous pro seasons, the Marlins will likely be selective with his usage moving forward. Though the talented righty will be back in the big leagues at some point as the Marlins push for a wild-card spot, Ng left it open for interpretation whether Perez would be deployed as a starter or reliever once he's called up. Even if the Marlins are willing to clear room in the rotation for Perez, he could be on a shorter leash with regard to his pitch count compared to Miami's other starters.
JULY 31, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Perez was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Perez will head to Jacksonville ahead of the All-Star break and could remain in the minors for the time being. His performance on the mound this year has been stellar, posting a 2.36 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 61 strikeouts over 53.1 innings in 11 starts with Miami, but the team appears to be taking a cautious approach with the the 20-year-old's workload. The team has yet to announce who will replace Perez in their starting rotation, though Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is set to return shortly after the break.
JULY 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Bounces back with quality start Perez (5-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Cardinals. He struck out seven.
Impact After retiring only one batter in his last start while giving up six runs, Perez rebounded with six innings of one-run ball. Thursday's outing should allow fantasy managers to breathe a sigh of relief and rest assured that Perez's nightmare start was nothing more than a fluke. Outside of his horrific performance against Atlanta, he's given up less than two runs in every appearance since May 28 (seven starts) and has struck out six or more batters five times across that stretch. Perez will have over a week to rest before his next start, which is projected to come during a rematch with the Cardinals in St. Louis.
JULY 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Gets education in Atlanta Perez (5-2) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on seven hits in just one-third of an inning as the Marlins fell 7-0 to Atlanta.
Impact MLB's hottest offense provided some harsh lessons for the 20-year-old righty, as Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies led off the game with back-to-back solo shots, and all told five of the seven hits off Perez went for extra bases. Over his prior six starts however, the young phenom had allowed just one run with a 38:9 K:BB in 33 innings. Another outing or two like this might make it easier for the Marlins to send Perez back down to the minors and manage his workload, but with the team currently sitting in the first wild-card spot in the NL, they could be faced with some tough decisions on how to handle him in the second half. For now, Perez lines up for one more start before the All-Star break, which is likely to come at home next week against the Cardinals.
JULY 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Blanks Pirates Perez (5-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing four hits and one walk over six scoreless innings against the Pirates. He struck out nine.
Impact Perez tossed another gem Sunday, holding Pittsburgh scoreless through six innings while tying his season high in strikeouts. After giving up seven runs over his first three MLB appearances (14 innings) Perez has let just one batter cross the plate since (33.0 innings). Though Perez may be given some time off leading up to the All-Star break to help prevent late-season fatigue, he should still be considered one of the most valuable arms in fantasy.
JUNE 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
May be paused before All-Star break The Marlins are considering pausing Perez following his scheduled start next weekend against Atlanta, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Nothing is set in stone just yet, but it appears the Marlins are looking to give Perez an extended rest period heading into the All-Star break. The 20-year-old rookie has been phenomenal since arriving in the majors, recording a 1.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with a 45:14 K:BB through 41 frames. With 72 innings pitched between Triple-A and the majors this season, Perez is quickly approaching the most innings he's ever thrown in a season (78).
JUNE 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans nine over six scoreless Perez didn't factor in the decision in Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the Blue Jays after he allowed three hits and no walks across six scoreless innings. He struck out nine.
Impact The 20-year-old threw 59 of 80 pitches for strikes and generated 19 whiffs as he set a career high in strikeouts, though he was unable to grab his fifth win since the Marlins failed to score. Perez has surrendered just one run over his past five starts and has a 29:8 K:BB in 27 frames during that stretch. The righty has already thrown 72 innings between Triple-A and the majors this season after topping out at 77 and 78 frames the past two years, which makes his spot in the rotation tenuous despite his dominant form.
JUNE 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strong again in win Perez (4-1) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six over six scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Mariners.
Impact With reports of Perez being the likely roster casualty for when Trevor Rogers (biceps) returns, the 20-year-old right-hander did his best to make a case to stay on the roster. This was Perez's longest start of the season, and it was arguably his most dominant yet. He's shown little trouble with major-league hitters, posting a 1.80 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 36:14 K:BB over 35 innings across seven appearances. The idea behind sending Perez down would be workload management -- he's at 66 frames this season after tossing just 77 innings last year and 78 the year before. Rogers experienced soreness in his non-throwing shoulder over the weekend, which might be enough to buy Perez at least one more start in the majors, which is tentatively lined up to be at home versus the Blue Jays next week.
JUNE 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Could be optioned soon Perez could be optioned to the minors when Trevor Rogers (biceps) returns from the injured list within the next week or so, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.
Impact Whether it's when Rogers is activated or soon after, Perez being sent back to the minors at some point seems to be inevitable. He doesn't deserve to be demoted, of course, having put up a 2.17 ERA and 30:13 K:BB over 29 innings covering six starts. However, the 20-year-old has never thrown more than 78 innings in a pro season and has already reached 60 frames between the majors and minors in 2023, so some level of workload management here is necessary. Jackson and Mish write that the Marlins are comfortable in letting Perez throw 100-to-120 innings this season and sending him to the minors would more easily allow the team to limit his starts to one per 7-to-10 days. The goal would be to curtail Perez's workload now so he could potentially be available down the stretch should Miami remain in playoff contention.
JUNE 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans six in no-decision Perez allowed one run on five hits and two walks over five innings in Friday's loss to the White Sox. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
Impact The only damage against Perez was a solo shot by Yasmani Grandal in the second inning. Perez tossed 10 shutout innings in his previous two starts and has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his first six MLB starts. He lowered his season ERA to 2.17 with a 30:13 K:BB through 29 frames. Perez is lined up for a start in Seattle next week.
JUNE 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Blanks Athletics Perez (3-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing four hits and one walk over five scoreless innings in a 12-1 win over the Athletics. He struck out five.
Impact Perez made his second consecutive start without allowing a run, moving to 10 straight scoreless innings. Though the 20-year-old has had some struggles with command in the bigs (4.1 BB/9), he has struck out 24 batters in 24 innings of work thus far to go along with a 2.25 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Perez is tentatively expected to face the White Sox and Mariners in his next two starts and should remain firmly in the fantasy conversation.
JUNE 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Throws five shutout innings Perez (2-1) allowed two hits and four walks while striking out three over five shutout innings to earn the win over the Angels on Sunday.
Impact Perez's four walks were a blemish, but he kept runs off the board for the first time in his four career starts. There's still room for growth with his command at the big-league level -- he has issued 10 walks in 19 innings so far, though he's also racked up 19 strikeouts. The 20-year-old also has decent ratios with a 2.84 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, so he's a safe distance away from looking overmatched. He's projected for a favorable home start versus Oakland his next time out.
MAY 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in Colorado Perez (1-1) took the loss Tuesday versus the Rockies, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Impact A stop at Coors Field was always going to be a test for the rookie, and he held his own until things got out of hand in the fifth inning. The silver lining from Tuesday is that this was the first time in three starts he hasn't allowed a home run. Perez has a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB through 14 innings. He'll be closer to sea level for his next start, which is projected to be on the road versus the Angels this weekend.
MAY 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up first big-league victory Perez (1-0) earned the win over Washington on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six batters over five innings.
Impact Perez gave up a solo homer to Jeimer Candelario in the fourth inning, but that was the only tally the Nationals managed against him. The rookie right-hander didn't miss many bats, but he got 18 called strikes and punched out six batters. Perez is only 20 years old, but he hasn't looked overmatched at the big-league level, allowing three runs and posting a 13:3 K:BB over 9.2 frames. His next start is tentatively slated to come in the altitude of Colorado against the Rockies.

Marlins phenom Eury Perez has arrived. The sky is the limit for the 6-8 pitcher
Strikes out seven in MLB debut Perez did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings during a 7-4 loss to Cincinnati. He struck out seven.
Impact Perez made the jump from Double-A Pensacola to make his MLB debut Friday, and despite taking a no-decision, he impressed with his stuff and gave Miami a chance to compete. Both of the runs he allowed came via solo home runs, but he kept the bases clean for the most part and half of the rookie's outs were strikeouts. The 20-year-old presumably did enough to earn another start at the big-league level, which is tentatively scheduled for a three-game set versus Washington next week.
MAY 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Contract officially selected Perez's contract was selected from Double-A Pensacola on Friday.
Impact Perez will make his major-league debut as the Marlins' starter during Friday's matchup against the Reds. He's been productive at Pensacola to begin the year, posting a 2.32 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in 31 innings over six starts. Perez has an impressive four-pitch arsenal with solid command and has the tools to succeed at the big-league level.
MAY 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Making MLB debut Friday Perez will be recalled from Double-A Pensacola to start for the Marlins on Friday against the Reds, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Perez will make his MLB debut against Cincinnati on Friday, and he's earned the promotion with a 2.32 ERA and 42:9 K:BB ratio for Pensacola over 31 innings in his six starts in the Southern League. The 6-foot-8 right-hander shows four pitches that can miss bats, and he commands all four offerings very well for a 20-year-old. There may be some ups-and-downs for Perez in his first taste of major-league action, but everything is here for him to provide fantasy relevance from the minute he steps on the field.
MAY 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
May be ready for next challenge Perez struck out 11 baters over five innings Tuesday for Double-A Pensacola, and pitching coach Dave Eiland believes the 20-year-old is ready for a promotion to Triple-A, Ben Weinr...
Impact "He had his best fastball command that I've seen out of him in the year-plus that I've had him, and of course, that sets up everything else," Eiland said after the game. "That's saying a lot as well as he pitched last year. Just as far as the way he uses his pitches, the way he's commanding them all, the way they all complement one another. That's what you want to see in a young pitcher, a young prospect." Including his stint with Pensacola in 2022, Perez now sports a 3.69 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 139:32 K:BB through 100 innings at Double-A, and the only benchmark left for him to reach before a bump up to Triple-A could be tied to his workload. He hasn't yet been allowed to take on a regular five-day schedule in the Blue Wahoos rotation, instead taking the mound every sixth day this season.
MAY 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Dominant outing at Double-A Perez gave up two hits and a walk over five scoreless innings while striking out five for Double-A Pensacola on Thursday.
Impact Just a few days after his 20th birthday, the right-hander carved up an overmatched Birmingham lineup, producing 17 swinging strikes among his 71 pitches. It's Perez's first win of the year, and while his 17:5 K:BB through 14 innings in three starts perhaps isn't as dominant as many expected, it's important to remember that he's the youngest pitcher at the Double-A level. Merely holding his own against much older hitters would be impressive enough, but Perez has the talent -- and the high 90s heat -- to do much more. Despite his age, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him force a promotion to Triple-A sometime over the summer.
