Solid in no-decision
Fedde gave up a run on two hits and two walks while fanning five across 4.2 innings Monday against the Cardinals. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact
Fedde was just one out away from qualifying for the win, but he still delivered a strong effort on the mound. This outing was certainly a step in the right direction after he was rocked for six runs (five earned) on six hits with three walks and one strikeout over 1.2 innings against Atlanta on April 7.

Rocked in Game 1

Impact
The 28-year-old was called upon for the spot start due to the twin bill, and he needed 45 pitches to record only five outs before being pulled. Fedde was set to open the season in a long-relief/swingman role, but he could be in the mix for more starts early on, depending how long Jon Lester and Patrick Corbin are sidelined due to the COVID-19 protocols.

Fedde will start Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Braves, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact

Out of options
Fedde no longer has any options remaining following an arbitrator's ruling, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
Fedde hasn't had a great spring, giving up five runs in seven innings while posting a 7:4 K:BB, and he's fallen well behind Joe Ross in the battle for the No. 5 starter job. It's possible Fedde's lack of options gives him a leg up in the battle for a swingman/long-relief role, as the Nationals would have to place him on waivers to send him to the minors, but Austin Voth is also out of options and is a candidate for the same role.

Losing ground in rotation battle
Fedde threw 67 pitches over four innings in a simulated game Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
The right-hander faced off against Joe Ross, his main competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation. but Fedde wasn't quite as efficient with his workload. Both pitchers could begin the year in the rotation if either Stephen Strasburg (calf) or Jon Lester (neck) isn't ready for Opening Day, but if only one spot is available, it appears to be Ross' job to lose at this point in the spring. Through seven Grapefruit League innings, Fedde has a 6.43 ERA and 7:4 K:BB.

Strong outing against Mets

Impact
The right-hander came into camp in the running for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, but Joe Ross was considered the favorite for that role and has done nothing to allow Fedde or Austin Voth to close the gap on him. However, Jon Lester (neck) may not be ready for Opening Day, creating another vacancy, and Fedde's performance Saturday may have put him in the lead to fill it. If he doesn't break camp in the rotation, the 28-year-old will either head down to Triple-A to stay stretched out or handle a long-relief role in the big-league bullpen.

Could fit in six-man rotation
Fedde would be an option for the final spot if the Nationals open the season with a six-man rotation, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact
The right-hander is currently battling Joe Ross and Austin Voth for the No. 5 job, but with Jon Lester (thyroid surgery) now questionable for Opening Day another spot could open up, and given the overall state of the team's veteran and injury-prone top of the rotation, all three could wind up getting turns in the early part of the season. The Nats also only have two scheduled off days over the first three weeks, giving them extra incentive to take it easy on the likes of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Fedde appeared in 11 games (eight starts) in 2020, posting a solid 4.29 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 50.1 innings, but his 12.6 percent strikeout rate gives him limited fantasy appeal in any role.

Starting spring opener
Fedde will get the start in the Nationals' first Grapefruit League game Sunday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The right-hander is in the mix for the No. 5 starter job, although Joe Ross is considered the favorite to break camp in that spot. Fedde posted a career-best 4.29 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 50.1 innings last season, but his 28:22 K:BB was lackluster as he relied on weak contact and groundballs to generate outs. The 28-year-old's best fit on the staff might be in long relief.

Solid outing wasted
Fedde (2-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Phillies after giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk over seven innings.
Impact
The right-hander kept Philadelphia in check for most of the game with the exception of Bryce Harper, who hit a pair of solo homers. The bullpen then allowed nine runs in the last two innings, eliminating any chance of taking him off the hook for the loss. Fedde will finish with a 4.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 28:22 K:BB over 50.1 innings, assuming he doesn't appear out of the bullpen this weekend.
