Strasburg hurt as Nationals beat Orioles 15-3 for 'split'

The Washington Nationals overcame an injury to Stephen Strasburg, rebounded from a defeat that took five days to play out and weathered a lengthy rain delay before beating the Balt...

Likely to stick in bullpen Fedde will likely remain in the bullpen during the upcoming week with Max Scherzer (hamstring) expected to make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Mets, Mark Zuckerman of...
Impact Fedde earned a spot in the Opening Day rotation while Stephen Strasburg (hand) missed his first two turns, but he was deployed in long relief Aug. 5 against the Mets after Scherzer lasted just one inning before exiting with an injury. Since Strasburg was cleared to make his 2020 debut Sunday and Scherzer's hamstring has been responding well to workouts over the past couple of days, the Nationals are optimistic they'll have their ideal rotation intact for the first time all season.
AUGUST 9, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Forced into action Wednesday Fedde (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as the Nationals fell 3-1 to the Mets, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over three innings of relief. He struck out one.
Impact The right-hander was needed out of the 'pen once Max Scherzer (hamstring) left the game after the first inning, and while Fedde wasn't sharp -- he threw only 28 of 58 pitches for strikes -- he was able to limit the damage against him. His next turn in the rotation was originally scheduled for Sunday, but given his workload here he's almost certain to be bumped. Patrick Corbin will likely move up a day to take that start instead, but Fedde could slot back in for Monday's road game against the Mets on a normal four days rest.

Starting team's first game of week Corbin is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Mets in Washington, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact After their three-game series in Miami this past weekend was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, the Nationals will return from a four-day break Tuesday. Manager Dave Martinez has opted to use the off days to reorder the pitching schedule, as Corbin and Max Scherzer will take the hill for the two games versus the Mets. The Nationals are only scheduled to play five games this week and may not have Stephen Strasburg (hand) available for any of those contests, so Corbin could be in store for a two-start week if Martinez opts to temporarily shorten the rotation to four men. In that scenario, Austin Voth or Erick Fedde would likely move to the bullpen to clear room for Corbin to start Sunday's series finale with the Orioles.

Washington Nationals’ Erick Fedde fills in again, doesn’t last long vs Blue Jays... Erick Fedde went just 3 1⁄3 innings in Thursday’s finale with the Blue Jays in Nationals Park.
AUGUST 1, 2020 • FEDERALBASEBALL.COM
Collects first win Harper (1-0) picked up the win in Thursday's victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one hit and striking out one over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Impact The right-hander was the first pitcher out of the bullpen after Erick Fedde hit his pitch limit, and Harper inherited a fairly comfortable 5-2 lead. The 31-year-old has been one of the Nats' most effective relievers in the early going, posting a 0.00 ERA and 6:1 K:BB in five innings over four appearances, but his reliable on off-speed stuff rather than plus velocity makes it unlikely Harper will work his way into the kind of high-leverage role that would give him fantasy appeal in most formats.

Another two homers Hernandez went 3-for-4 with two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored Thursday against the Nationals.
Impact Hernandez hit a pair of solo home runs, the first coming in the fourth inning off Erick Fedde. He followed that up in the eighth frame, taking Tanner Rainey yard. It was Hernandez's second two-homer effort in the last four games, and he now has four long balls on the season. While he continues to strike out plenty, Hernandez has still managed to collect nine hits -- eight have gone for extra bases -- in 31 plate appearances.
JULY 30, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Limited to 57 pitches Fedde allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out none across 3.1 innings Thursday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Fedde wasn't particularly sharp, allowing multiple baserunners in three of the four innings he pitched. However, he did keep the Nationals competitive in the game, and he exited the game with a 4-2 lead. While Fedde now has a 3.68 ERA across 7.1 total innings this season, his 3:3 K:BB ratio is much less inspiring. Fedde may not make another start for a quite a while, given that the team will not be in action this weekend and that Stephen Strasburg (hand) continues to work his way back into the rotation.

No longer feeling nerve issue Manager Dave Martinez said Strasburg is no longer feeling "the little nerve issue" in his hand anymore, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Martinez added that Strasburg just needs to build his arm back up before he can rejoin the rotation. The right-hander is steadily working his way back, as he incorporated all of his pitches in a flat-ground throwing session Thursday after firing only fastballs from 75-to-80 feet Wednesday. Strasburg's next step is likely mound work; how he responds should provide clarity on his return date. Erick Fedde is set to make another start in place of Strasburg on Thursday.

Throwing again Wednesday Strasburg (hand) is scheduled to throw from 75-80 feet Wednesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact Strasburg, who is dealing with nerve irritation in his throwing hand, is set to ramp things up Wednesday after throwing at about 75 percent Tuesday. If the right-hander feels good during Wednesday's session, he could be cleared to throw a side session before the end of the week. In the meantime, Erick Fedde will make another start in place of Strasburg on Thursday.
JULY 29, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Remains in rotation for now Fedde will make another start Thursday against the Blue Jays, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact Fedde was a last-minute fill-in for Stephen Strasburg against the Yankees on Saturday and performed competently enough, allowing two runs (one earned) in four innings. He'll get at least one more turn in the rotation with Strasburg still battling a hand issue, but Strasburg has a chance to be cleared for his next start if his bullpen session Wednesday goes well.

Goes four on short notice Fedde was charged with two runs (one earned) on four hits over four innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Saturday. He struck out three and issued one walk.
Impact This was an impressive showing considering it was a last-minute assignment and he was facing the Yankees. Fedde was starting in place of Stephen Strasburg (hand). Strasburg said that he does not expect to be out "too long," but Fedde will likely eat the bulk of the innings on Strasburg's day in the meantime. If Strasburg can't go next week, Fedde would get the ball in a road matchup against the Blue Jays.

Doesn't expect long absence Strasburg doesn't believe the nerve issue which caused him to miss his scheduled start Saturday against the Yankees will keep him out "too long," Jesse Dougherty of The Washington...
Impact While Strasburg's optimism is certainly a good sign, "too long" is hardly a precise timeline. There's a good chance one should emerge soon, however. Erick Fedde is set to make a spot start in his absence Saturday.
JULY 25, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Starting on short notice Fedde will start Saturday against the Yankees, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.
Impact Fedde will start on short notice for the team's second game of the season after Stephen Strasburg was scratched from his start with a nerve issue in his right hand. Fedde drew praise during camp about his performance as he competed for the No. 5 starter role. The right-hander recorded a 4.50 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 21 appearances (12 starts) last season.
