Could play catch Friday Hernandez (biceps) could resume playing catch as early as Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Hernandez was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right biceps tendon inflammation Monday. However, manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that Hernandez has been feeling better every day. While the right-hander will still need to build back up and show increased velocity before he's cleared to return, it's encouraging that he'll begin a throwing program in the near future.

Placed on injured list Hernandez landed on the 10-day injured list with right biceps tendon inflammation Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact It's a disappointing start to the season for the 25-year-old, who was an interesting sleeper over the offseason after producing some very strong numbers in six short starts last year. His velocity dropped by nearly six ticks over the course of his season debut Saturday against the Rays, and he exited in the third inning with what initially appeared to be a potential blister. As it turns out, the issue could be far more serious. He'll visit a doctor Monday, after which a clearer timeline for his return should emerge.

Dealing with biceps inflammation Hernandez was diagnosed with right biceps inflammation after leaving Saturday's start against the Rays, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. His velocity had dropped to 85...
Impact The 25-year-old exited during the third inning with what initially appeared to be a hand injury, but it's now been officially announced as biceps inflammation. Hernandez currently lines up to start Thursday against the Mets, though it's unclear if he'll be able to remain on schedule due to the injury.

Exits early with hand injury Hernandez exited his season debut Saturday against the Rays in the third inning with an apparent hand injury, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Hernandez was looking at his finger earlier in the game, so he might not be dealing with anything worse than a blister. He's battled blister issues in recent seasons. A clearer diagnosis should be available after the game.

Wendle's 3-run HR in 9th rallies Rays over Marlins 6-4

Wrapping up strong spring Hernandez has posted a 4.15 ERA and 12:1 K:BB through 8.2 innings over three Grapefruit League starts.
Impact The right-hander often gets overshadowed in a young Marlins rotation, especially with Trevor Rogers teasing a breakout and Sixto Sanchez routinely popping triple digits this spring, but Hernandez is showing that he has some upside of his own. The 25-year-old recorded a 3.16 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 25.2 innings last year while rarely facing a batter for the third time in a game, and he's hoping the addition of a consistent changeup to his arsenal will allow him to take a big step forward in 2021.

Working on changeup Hernandez has been working on his changeup in hopes of pitching deeper into games this season, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact On a per-inning basis Hernandez was excellent last season, backing up his 3.16 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP, 32.1 percent strikeout rate and 4.7 percent walk rate. The main negative from his statline is that he averaged just 4.3 innings per start. The 25-year-old was almost never asked to go a third time through the order, facing just seven batters for a third time and allowing four earned runs while recording just two outs when he did. Hernandez almost exclusively used his fastball and slider last year, throwing his changeup just 5.7 percent of the time, so if the pitch truly has improved it could certainly help him reach the next level.

Placed on injured list Hernandez (lat) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Hernandez left his start Tuesday against Toronto with what was originally called right lat soreness, but the diagnosis has been updated to a strain. His expected return date is not yet clear, but he'll miss at least one turn in the rotation, as he won't be eligible to be activated until Sept. 12. The Marlins are expected to activate Jose Urena from the COVID-19 injured list next week when a new fifth starter is needed, but utility man Eddy Alvarez was recalled in a corresponding move Wednesday.

Managing lat soreness Hernandez exited Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays with right lat soreness, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact The 25-year-old finished two innings and returned for his third frame, but he called the training staff to the mound and exited after throwing some warmup pitches. According to Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com, Hernandez will undergo an MRI and is expected to miss at least one start, though a trip to the injured list is also possible.
