Impact Coming out of camp, it was unclear who would be the top option for the ninth inning, but the Mets called on Diaz to preserve the one-run lead in Friday's contest. He allowed a walk with one out, but he struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the save in the season opener. While the right-hander should have less job security in 2020 after recording a career-worst 5.59 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with seven blown saves last season, his usage Friday suggests that he'll still be the top option for save chances to start the year.

No insight on role Diaz wants to close for the Mets this season but doesn't know whether or not he's the team's closer, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Impact Reports from earlier in camp suggested that the Mets' closer position had yet to be decided, and it seems as though that's still the case. Diaz had one of the most dominant closer seasons in recent memory for the Mariners in 2018, saving 57 games while posting a 1.96 ERA and a 44.3 percent strikeout rate, but his ERA exploded to 5.59 last year, his first with the Mets, as he blew seven save chances. The Mets have a handful of quality alternatives this season, as Dellin Betances, Jeurys Familia and Seth Lugo have saved a combined 169 games.

Closing duties up in the air Manager Luis Rojas declined to commit to Diaz as the team's closer Sunday and said, "I don't know yet. We'll get there at some point," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Impact Rojas brought up Diaz, Dellin Betances, Seth Lugo and Jeurys Familia as potential options for the ninth inning, and he also floated the possibility of utilizing a committee approach. Diaz should remain the favorite given his pedigree and what the team gave up to acquire him, but his 2019 struggles (5.59 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while blowing seven of 33 save chances) are unlikely to be forgotten quickly.
