Starting assignment Saturday Sosa (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Impact Back spasms have kept Sosa on the injured list since Sunday, though he has already been cleared to participate in minor-league games. Assuming everything goes smoothly in Triple-A, it seems the 28-year-old has a good chance of returning to Philadelphia once eligible Tuesday.

Lands on injured list The Phillies placed Sosa on the 10-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to Sept. 7, due to back spasms.

Impact The 28-year-old had seen an uptick in playing time after Alec Bohm (hand) landed on the injured list, but Sosa is now dealing with his own injury. It's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined, but Sosa will be eligible to be reinstated Sept. 17.

Though Bohm remains out of the lineup Wednesday, the Phillies will give Kody Clemens a look at third base while Sosa hits the bench. Bohm is considered day-to-day and is expected to avoid a stint on the injured list, so Sosa could be headed back to a utility role before long.

Impact After Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list May 4, Sosa took over as the Phillies' primary shortstop and slashed an impressive .275/.336/.505 with four home runs, three stolen bases, 22 runs and 17 RBI in 32 games while the two-time All-Star was sidelined. Turner will make his return from the IL on Monday and will immediately step back into his everyday role at shortstop, leaving Sosa without a regular spot in the lineup.
