Impact Lamet may have been the headliner for the Brewers had this trade happened a couple years ago, when he was a front-of-the-rotation arm for the Padres, but after enduring a litany of elbow problems, he converted to a full-time relief role ahead of the 2022 campaign. The right-hander has been able to steer clear of the injured list so far this season, but he hadn't emerged as a trusted late-inning arm for the Friars, as he turned in a 9.49 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB across 12.1 innings out of the bullpen. The Brewers will see if they can coax better results out of him in the final two months of the campaign before deciding whether to tender him a contract ahead of his final year of arbitration this winter.

Impact Lamet was demoted in mid-May after struggling to a 9.72 ERA across his first 10 relief outings of the year. Both his 23.8 percent strikeout rate and his 16.7 percent walk rate represent career worsts. He's been far better in nine outings for Triple-A El Paso, cruising to a 0.93 ERA and 34.9 percent strikeout rate, though his 11.6 percent walk rate remains elevated. Craig Stammen (shoulder) landed on the injured list in a corresponding move.

Light use out of bullpen thus far Lamet has made one relief appearance across the Padres' first five games, retiring the lone batter he faced en route to earning a hold in San Diego's April 8 win over Arizona.

Impact The Padres' decision to trade away starter Chris Paddack on Opening Day didn't change Lamet's outlook, as the 29-year-old is still beginning the season in a relief role. Lamet has thrown just one pitch so far this season, but Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune relayed that the right-hander threw at least a couple dozen of pitches while warming up in the bullpen in each of the last three contests. Manager Bob Melvin acknowledged after Monday's 4-2 win over the Giants that he needed to vary his reliever usage a bit, so it's possible that Lamet could gain some traction in a setup role in front of closer Taylor Rogers in the coming days.
