Entering rotation Wednesday
Javier will start Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
The 25-year-old has worked in long relief to begin the season, but he'll receive a starting opportunity after delivering 8.1 innings across his three appearances. Javier threw 55 pitches in his previous appearance, so he may be limited to about 70-80 pitches his first time through the rotation. Jake Odorizzi, who has struggled so far in 2022, is also scheduled to start versus Texas, so it appears manager Dusty Baker will employ a six-man rotation.

Three hitless innings in relief
Javier tossed three shutout innings in relief, striking out five and hitting two batters in a 3-2 loss Wednesday in Arizona.
Impact
Javier made his second appearance of the year out of the bullpen for Houston. The 25-year-old has now struck out eight of the 17 batters he's faced this year. The Astros frequently used Javier for more than one inning in relief last season and appear to have the same plan for the beginning part of 2022.

Opening season in bullpen
Javier will begin the 2022 season in the bullpen, operating as a long-relief option, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Manager Dusty Baker said Monday that Javier will be a relief option to start the 2022 campaign, potentially making a spot start here and there. The 25-year-old mostly pitched out of the bullpen last season, appearing in 36 games while starting nine times. He'll look to build on his strong numbers from 2021 where he produced a 3.55 ERA and 1.18 WHIP while going 4-1 with two saves on four attempts and collecting five holds. Javier also excelled in strikeout department, finishing the year with a 11.5 K/9.

Earns relief win
Javier (4-1) allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six over 2.2 relief innings Monday to pick up the win over Texas.
Impact
Javier came in for starter Jake Odorizzi, who was removed after 1.1 innings with a foot injury sustained while covering first base. By that time, Houston had built a 7-0 lead, and Javier just needed to get outs. Long relief is familiar to Javier, who served as a starter earlier this season before moving to the bullpen in a multi-inning role.
