Hitless in big-league debut
Abrams went 0-for-4 and was caught stealing in the Padres' 3-0 win over Arizona on Friday.
Impact
Though he didn't reach base in the victory, Abrams flashed a bit of the potential that led San Diego to include him on its Opening Day roster. The 21-year-old reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning and nearly swiped second base but slid past the bag and was tagged out after easily beating the throw. In the sixth, Abrams put excellent contact on a slider and drove the ball deep to right field, but it was caught on the warning track. The start was Abrams' first of the campaign after Ha-Seong Kim started at shortstop Opening Day, and it appears the pair may split time at the position until Fernando Tatis (wrist) returns in approximately two months.

Making big-league debut Friday
Abrams will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Friday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Impact
The 21-year-old had his contract selected by San Diego on Thursday and didn't see the field during the Opening Day loss to Arizona, but he'll join the lineup for his MLB debut Friday. Abrams, who is the Padres' top prospect, hit .290/.357/.414 with two home runs, 23 RBI and 13 stolen bases for Double-A San Antonio last year, and he's expected to have at least a part-time role at second base, shortstop and right field this season.

Won't start in opener
Abrams isn't included in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Impact
Fresh off getting an official promotion to San Diego earlier Thursday, Abrams will take in his first big-league game from the dugout. The matchup with Arizona southpaw Madison Bumgarner is likely a factor in the lefty-hitting Abrams taking a seat, but the 21-year-old rookie is expected to handle at least a part-time role versus right-handed pitching. Abrams saw action at second base, shortstop and right field in spring training, with all three positions representing potential avenues to playing time when any of Jake Cronenworth, Ha-Seong Kim, Wil Myers or Jurickson Profar are out of the lineup.

Promotion to majors official
The Padres selected Abrams' contract from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
Impact
The 21-year-old secured his spot on the Opening Day roster after slashing .324/.359/.514 across 37 at-bats during Cactus League play. The Padres haven't indicated that their top prospect will be an everyday starter at any position, but Abrams likely wouldn't have made the Opening Day roster just to provide depth. He'll presumably be in store for at least a handful of starts per week at either second base and shortstop, and perhaps even right field, where he received a look in the Padres' Cactus League finale. Abrams' excellent bat-to-ball skills and high-end speed could make him a useful asset in the batting average and stolen base categories.
