Tearing up Triple-A ball
Abrams has gone 5-for-15 with three home runs, nine RBI, six runs and two stolen bases in three games since being sent down to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Impact
Abrams made the big club out of spring training but struggled against big-league pitching, slashing .182/.270/.273 over 65 plate appearances. The Padres consequently sent him down for his first stint at the Triple-A level, and the 21-year-old responded by slamming two long balls in his first game and another in his second. It wouldn't be surprising to see Abrams back with San Diego at some point during the campaign.

Demoted to Triple-A
Abrams was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Impact
The 21-year-old started 16 games during the first month of the season but never found his groove offensively with a .182/.270/.273 slash line in 65 plate appearances. Abrams' playing time diminished over the past couple weeks, and he'll now head back to the Triple-A level to see more regular at-bats. Ha-Seong Kim should continue to operate as the Friars' primary shortstop, though Abrams could receive another opportunity in the majors later in the year.

Sits again Saturday
Abrams remains on the bench for Saturday's game against the Pirates.
Impact
Abrams and Ha-Seong Kim were in something close to a true platoon at shortstop throughout the early part of the season, but Abrams' off day here against JT Brubaker means he's now sat against two straight righties. It's possible he's dealing with an unreported injury, but it's also possible he's being benched due to his .146/.255/.244 slash line. Kim, who's hitting a far better .273/.373/.568, will get another start Saturday.

Not in Friday's lineup
Abrams will be on the bench Friday against the Padres.
Impact
Each of Abrams' previous off days this season came against left-handers, but he'll sit here against righty Zach Thompson. He's struggled significantly at the plate through his first 14 major-league games, as one might expect for a player skipping Triple-A after appearing just 42 times at the Double-A level, hitting .146/.255/.244. Ha-Seong Kim will be the shortstop Friday.

Takes seat against lefty
Abrams is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds.
Impact
With southpaw Reiver Sanmartin on the bump for Cincinnati, the lefty-hitting Abrams will give way to righty-hitting platoon mate Ha-Seong Kim at shortstop. Though Abrams seems to have taken hold of the larger side of the timeshare at the position, his .143 average and lack of counting stats (one home run, one stolen base, five runs and two RBI over 40 plate appearances) have thus far capped his fantasy appeal. Abrams' long-term fantasy ceiling is high, though he may not come close to realizing it as a rookie.

Sitting versus southpaw
Abrams is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.
Impact
Abrams will once again head to the bench against a left-handed starting pitcher. Ha-Seong Kim will start at shortstop with Clayton Kershaw on the mound for Los Angeles.

On bench against lefty
Abrams isn't starting Friday's game against the Dodgers.
Impact
Left-hander Julio Urias is starting for the Dodgers on Friday, so Abrams will retreat to the bench. Ha-Seong Kim will take over at shortstop and bat eighth.

Sits against another southpaw
Abrams remains on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Reds.
Impact
While Abrams is out of the lineup for his second straight game, that doesn't seem to indicate that his role has changed. He's been in the lineup against every righty this season while sitting against every lefty, so his off day here against southpaw Reiver Sanmartin is merely a continuation of that trend. Ha-Seong Kim remains the starter at shortstop.

Heads to bench
Abrams will be on the bench Monday against Cincinnati, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact
Abrams has started against every righty the Padres have faced this season but has been on the bench against every lefty, including Monday's starter Nick Lodolo. Ha-Seong Kim will start at shortstop.

Gets start in right field
Abrams made his first major-league start in right field against the Braves on Friday and went 0-for-2 with a run and a stolen base in the loss.
Impact
Abrams saw some time in right field during spring training, but until Friday he had made all five of his starts this season at shortstop. The need for the position switch arose due to Wil Myers' thumb injury, and Abrams handled the role fine, having no issues on his three putouts. He also achieved a milestone with his first stolen base as a major leaguer after being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. If he can demonstrate the ability to handle right field, Abrams could increase his likelihood to stick with the big club even after Fernando Tatis (wrist) returns from his injury. Myers remains out of the lineup Saturday, but Abrams is back at shortstop with Matt Beaty taking over in right field.

Slams first big-league homer
Abrams went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in a 12-1 victory over the Braves on Thursday.
Impact
Abrams enjoyed a special moment when he slammed a long ball to left field in his first MLB home at-bat in the second inning. The rookie shortstop made an out in each of his other four plate appearances, however, lowering his average to .105 on the season. There's little doubt about Abrams' immense talent, but he's mostly struggled thus far in his first taste of the big leagues.

On bench Monday
Abrams will sit Monday against the Giants.
Impact
Abrams has now been on the bench for three of the Padres' first five games, but the way he's been used is arguably encouraging for his future playing time. He's started at shortstop against both righties the Padres have faced, while Ha-Seong Kim has started against all three lefties, including Monday's starter Alex Wood. Once the Padres start facing a more standard split of righties and lefties, Abrams' playing time should increase.

Not in Sunday's lineup
Abrams is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Impact
Abrams started the past two games against right-handed pitchers and will take a seat in the series finale with southpaw Caleb Smith on the mound for Arizona. The rookie appears to be in the strong side of a platoon at shortstop, with Ha-Seong Kim taking the short side and starting Sunday.
