Impact Santillan missed the first three months of the 2023 campaign due to back and hamstring injuries and has posted an ugly 9.26 ERA across 23.1 innings of relief at Triple-A. The 26-year-old right-hander showed a lot of promise as a rookie in 2021, but he is now off the 40-man roster in Cincinnati.

Impact Fraley is expected to play for Louisville on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to the Reds' active roster ahead of Friday's series opener against the Cubs. He's been sidelined since Aug. 5 because of a stress fracture in his left fourth toe. The injury will likely require a surgical repair over the offseason.

Reiver Sanmartin - On mend from Tommy John surgery The Reds confirmed that Sanmartin (elbow) underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery July 7, MLB.com reports.
Impact At the time Sanmartin went under the knife, reports merely stated that he had surgery to repair his UCL, but it wasn't specifically noted whether he had Tommy John surgery or an alternative procedure such an internal brace surgery, the latter of which often carries a shorter recovery timeline. With Sanmartin having now been confirmed to have had Tommy John surgery, he'll be in store for at least a year-long rehab and recovery process, meaning that he likely won't be an option for the Cincinnati bullpen until after the 2024 All-Star break.

Justin Dunn - Suffers setback with shoulder Dunn's rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville was halted Thursday after he suffered a setback with his right shoulder, MLB.com reports.
Impact Dunn's last two seasons have been torpedoed by shoulder problems, with a subscapularis muscle in his right rotator cuff having kept him on the Reds' injured list since spring training. He began a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Aug. 16 and made two appearances for the affiliate before moving on to Louisville, but he made just one appearance at the Triple-A level before being shut down again. The Reds haven't provided word on the severity of his setback, but Dunn could be hard-pressed to make it back from the IL before the end of the 2023 campaign.

The Reds are still in the process of determining whether McLain is dealing with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 strain, the latter of which would necessitate a longer recovery timeline. If McLain's injury is on the milder side, he would have a chance at being available to return from the IL when first eligible Sept. 8.

Impact Fairchild played six innings in right field in his return from a one-week absence. He was replaced by pinch hitter Nick Martini in the seventh inning in a likely tactical move. It'll likely be a short-side platoon role for Fairchild the rest of the way, with Will Benson and Martini handling right field against right-handed pitchers until Jake Fraley (toe) comes back. Fairchild is slashing just .228/.325/.386 over 237 plate appearances this season, though he's added nine stolen bases and five home runs.
