Joey Votto - Could return Sunday Cincinnati manager David Bell said Votto (shoulder) could be activated from the injured list as early as Sunday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Impact Votto is set to begin a minor-league stint Friday with Triple-A Louisville, and the Reds apparently don't think he'll need much time to get back up to speed. The 39-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 24 because of a mild strain in his troublesome left shoulder. He's appeared in only 51 major-league games this season.

Impact Benson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and a stolen base in Wednesday's series finale against the Mariners, but the Reds will go righty-heavy Friday as they match up against Cardinals lefty Drew Rom. Benson has batted .156/.229/.219 in 35 plate appearances this year versus southpaws.

Impact Herget holds a 5.18 ERA and 13:6 K:BB over 24.1 innings during his time in the majors this season. It's the second time this season that the reliever was removed from the Reds' 40-man roster, and he seems likely to clear waivers again and head to Triple-A Louisville.

Impact Votto began easing back into hitting drills about a week ago and evidently things must have gone well. The Reds have not set a target date for Votto's return to the lineup, as they no doubt want to see how his shoulder responds in game action first. Votto has been on the shelf for the last two weeks with a left shoulder strain, which is the same shoulder he had surgically repaired last year.

Barring a setback, he is expected to be activated Tuesday ahead of the Reds' series in Detroit. Impact Though Hunter Greene (illness) is scheduled to return from the COVID-19-related injured list to start Sunday's series finale, the Reds will still have an opening in the rotation for Spiers this weekend with Ben Lively (illness) and Brandon Williamson (illness) still stuck on the COVID-19 IL and with Graham Ashcraft (toe) recently landing on the 15-day IL. Due to the Reds' depleted rotation depth, Spiers made the jump from Double-A Chattanooga to the majors last weekend and took a no-decision in a 15-7 loss to the Cubs, striking out seven while allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. Michael Mariot - Outrighted to Triple-A Mariot passed through waivers unclaimed and was outrighted Thursday to Triple-A Louisville, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact Mariot was pushed off the 40-man roster Tuesday after making his first major-league appearance since 2016 on Monday against the Mariners. The 34-year-old right-hander will remain part of the Reds organization for the time being.

Blake Dunn - Old, dominant at Double-A Dunn is hitting .347/.439/.577 with 14 home runs, 33 steals and a 23.7 percent strikeout rate in 70 games for Double-A Chattanooga.

Impact Dunn is a tough prospect to evaluate, as he just turned 25 years old earlier this week before playing a game at Triple-A, and he as been quite lucky on balls in play (.433 BABIP) at Double-A. On the flip side, he logged a 179 wRC+ at Single-A in 2022, a 149 wRC+ at High-A this year and a 168 wRC+ at Double-A, so he has only succeeded, and he has primarily played center field, so we're not talking about a player who is already at the bottom of the defensive spectrum. Dunn does not need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason, but he will likely get an invitation to big-league spring training before opening 2024 with Triple-A Louisville.

Edwin Arroyo - Strong finish at High-A Arroyo is slashing .293/.376/.508 with nine home runs, 24 steals and a 19.4 percent strikeout rate in his last 79 games for High-A Dayton.

Impact His season line (.257/.332/.444) and 116 wRC+ are strong for a good defensive infielder like Arroyo who didn't turn 20 until August, but he really came on strong over the final three-plus months of the season. The young switch hitter had a strong first full season in the Reds organization after getting traded from Seattle at last year's deadline in the Luis Castillo trade. Arroyo should head to Double-A next year as a 20-year-old.
