Will Benson - Not starting against lefty Benson is out of the lineup Friday against the Mets.
Impact Left-hander David Peterson will toe the slab for New York on Friday, so the lefty-hitting Benson will head to the bench. TJ Friedl, Harrison Bader and Hunter Renfroe will serve as the Reds' starting outfielders.

Elly De La Cruz - Gets breather Friday De La Cruz isn't in the Reds' lineup Friday against the Mets.
Impact De La Cruz will take a seat Friday after going just 1-for-20 across his last seven games. Noelvi Marte will start at shortstop and bat sixth while De La Cruz regroups.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Joey Votto - Sitting versus lefty Votto isn't in the Reds' lineup Friday against the Mets.
Impact With lefty David Peterson on the mound for New York, the lefty-hitting Votto will take a seat to begin Friday's contest. Spencer Steer will start at first base while Votto rests.

Alex Young - Starts rehab assignment Young (COVID-19) has been sent to Triple-A Louisville to begin a rehab assignment, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Young is one of several Reds players to go on the COVID-19 injured list but has been cleared for game action. It's not clear how many rehab appearances he might need, but it shouldn't be too many considering he's been out just under a week.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Stuart Fairchild - On rehab assignment Fairchild (COVID-19) has begun a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Fairchild landed on the COVID-19 injured list last weekend but is now feeling well enough to ramp things back up in game action. He's eligible to return Saturday, but the Reds might wait until early next week when they return home to activate him.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Ben Lively - Allows three runs in bulk relief Lively allowed three runs on four hits over 4.1 innings against the Tigers on Thursday. He struck out four and did not issue any walks.
Impact Lively went 1-2-3 through the Tigers' lineup after relieving Sam Moll to open the third inning, but immediately ran into trouble in the fourth, yielding three consecutive hits, including a two-run home run to Akil Baddoo. The right-hander hit another snag in the seventh, surrendering a leadoff single while also allowing a batter to reach due to a throwing error. It wasn't a great outing for Lively in his return from the Covid-19-related injured list and he's now allowed at least three runs in each of his last three appearances, dating back to Aug. 1. He's also given up at least one home run in six consecutive outings.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Spencer Steer - Bops homer in loss Steer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Tigers.
Impact Steer launched his team-leading 21st home run of the season in the sixth inning. In addition to homers, Steer leads the Reds with 79 RBI. While manager David Bell may shuttle players in and out of the starting lineup, he appears to be content putting the infielder/outfielder in the lineup daily.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Elly De La Cruz - Pinch hit for Thursday De La Cruz started at shortstop and walked twice before being removed for pinch hitter in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Tigers.
Impact De La Cruz's second-half slump has impacted his spot in the batting order as well as potential usage. The infielder batted seventh against left-hander Tuesday, was not in the starting lineup Wednesday for the first time since being called up, then batted eighth against a right-hander and was removed for a pinch hitter when a lefty reliever entered. In fact, manager David Bell unloaded a string of right-handed batters off the bench to pinch hit in the eighth inning, a sign that he's looking for every edge while the Reds battle for a playoff spot. Until this week, De La Cruz had been off limits to such tactics, but a .181 average and .606 OPS since the break has affected the exciting rookie.

Tejay Antone - Expects to return this season Antone (elbow) said Thursday that he expects to return this year, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Antone landed on the 15-day injured list Thursday morning due to soreness in his right elbow, which has twice required Tommy John surgery. He was sent for an MRI and the results are not yet available, but the 29-year-old reliever but told reporters that "it's nothing catastrophic" and "just a flareup." Antone will be first eligible for activation Sept. 29, just a few days before the end of the regular season.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Carson Spiers - Back in majors Spiers was recalled from Double-A Chattanooga on Thursday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Spiers has been roughed up for seven runs over seven innings in two starts for the Reds this season. He will provide the Reds' bullpen with some length.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Connor Phillips - Returned to Triple-A Phillips was returned to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Phillips allowed three runs over four innings in a spot start Wednesday in Detroit. Because he was up as a COVID-19 replacement, the rookie right-hander can return at any time. He is a candidate to draw another start next week.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Ben Lively - Activated for bulk duty Lively was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Lively is slated for bulk relief duty Thursday in Detroit, following opener Derek Law. The right-hander did not make a rehab appearance, having last pitched back on Aug. 26 when he went 5.2 frames.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Tejay Antone - Lands back on IL Antone was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right elbow discomfort, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Antone had to exit Wednesday's appearance against the Tigers with soreness in his pitching elbow. The reliever downplayed the injury, but there has to be some level of concern considering he's had Tommy John surgery twice. It's unlikely we'll see Antone again this season.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hunter Renfroe - Sitting out Thursday Renfroe is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Tigers.
Impact It's the fourth straight game that we've seen Refroe on the bench against a left-hander, although a minor hamstring injury could have played a part in that. Jake Fraley is in the designated hitter spot and Nick Martini is in right field.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Christian Encarnacion-Strand - On bench again Thursday Encarnacion-Strand is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Detroit.
Impact Encarnacion-Strand started Wednesday's game and reached base twice, but this now marks the third time he's been out of the lineup in the Reds' last four contests. With Joey Votto back from the injured list and Jake Fraley limited to designated hitter duty, the playing time squeeze for Encarnacion-Strand could continue.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Elly De La Cruz - Batting eighth Thursday De La Cruz is starting at shortstop and batting eighth for Thursday's game in Detroit.
Impact De La Cruz didn't start Wednesday's game and a day later is in the lowest batting order position he's been in all season. The talented rookie homered and drove in six runs in the first game of a doubleheader versus the Angels back on Aug. 23, but in 20 games since then he's hit only .158/.256/.197 with a 32.2 percent strikeout rate.

What we learned in MLB this week: Braves' unsung hero, Vlad Jr.'s home issues and more
Ben Lively - Expected to pitch Thursday Lively (COVID-19) is expected to be activated and pitch bulk innings Thursday against the Tigers, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Lively has not thrown since Aug. 26, when he went 5.2 innings. Reliever Derek Law, one of two active relievers not used Wednesday, will open for the Reds.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Elly De La Cruz - Steals base in win De La Cruz entered Wednesday's game as a pinch runner and stole a base in a 4-3 win over the Tigers.
Impact De La Cruz, who has slumped during the second half of the season, was held out of the starting lineup against lefty Eduardo Rodriguez on Wednesday. The switch-hitter had snapped an 0-for-22 run against southpaws the previous day. De La Cruz ran for Christian Encarnacion-Strand in the sixth inning and stole his 27th base, then stayed in the game to play shortstop and went 0-for-1. De La Cruz is batting .181 since the All-Star break.
