A's slug, pitch past Tigers 7-0 for 7th straight win

Picks up win Monday Bassitt (1-2) allowed two runs on two hits and five walks over five innings against the Diamondbacks on Monday, striking out four and garnering his first win of the season.

Impact Bassitt surrendered both of his runs in the third inning after issuing back-to-back walks and allowing both baserunners to score via a single and sac fly. The five free passes were the most he's allowed in a game since May of 2019, and he's come out of the gates with an 11:8 K:BB in his first three outings of the year. The positives from Monday are that he only allowed two hits and was able to keep the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard for the majority of his start. He'll look to show better control when he makes his next start against the Tigers on Sunday.

Impact Bassitt got up to six innings and 102 pitches in his second start of the season, but the right-hander yielded nine hits -- including two home runs -- to suffer his second straight loss. Most of the damage against Bassitt came in the third inning, when a pair of Dodger homers resulted in three runs. The 32-year-old hasn't been a disaster by any means at the start of the campaign, but he hasn't yet pitched well enough to provide hope that he can approach last season's career-best 2.29 ERA. He'll look for his first win in his next start, currently scheduled for Monday at Arizona.

Named Opening Day starter Bassitt was named the Athletics' Opening Day starter Thursday, so he'll get the nod against the Astros on April 1, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Impact Bassitt's 2.29 ERA last season may not have been remotely supported by his 3.59 FIP or 4.49 xFIP, but he'll get the honor nonetheless. He beat out Frankie Montas, who struggled to a 5.60 ERA last season, as well as the talented but inexperienced Jesus Luzardo. Bassitt will be the team's fourth Opening Day starter in the last four years and the 15th in the last 17 seasons.

"I just didn't have the slider today," Bassitt said. "I gave up the first double -- which I thought was going to be a home run -- on it. I was trying it, but it was not good today."
