Likely for bullpen spot Brothers appears likely to secure an Opening Day bullpen spot with the Cubs, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Impact The Cubs are in need of a second lefty reliever behind Andrew Chafin, and the battle this spring has seemingly come down to Brothers and Brad Wieck. Manager David Ross didn't officially say that Brothers had made the team, but noted that "he's ready to impact our ballclub in a big way." Wieck also isn't officially out of the mix, but if the Cubs do only keep two lefties, he looks like the odd man out.

Pushing for rotation Miller is a possibility for a rotation spot due to his strong spring performance, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Impact Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta and Zach Davies will be the team's top three starters to begin the season, and it's been assumed that Trevor Williams and Alec Mills will round out the rotation, but manager David Ross has not confirmed that notion. Miller's strong spring performance (1.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts across nine innings) has kept him in the mix for the back of the rotation. Even if Miller doesn't make the cut as a starter, he could be a versatile bullpen option for Ross.

Could head to alternate site Alzolay is a candidate to being the regular season at the Cubs' alternate training site, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Impact The team learned on Tuesday that it will have a fourth option year on Alzolay, meaning he can be moved to the minors or the alternate site without passing through waivers. If Alzolay starts at the alternate site, it gives the Cubs an easy way to manage the 26-year-old's innings this year. Alzolay hasn't topped 100 innings in a season since 2017, so it makes sense that the organization would build him up carefully. From a fantasy standpoint, Alzolay might be a more interesting option later in the season if he's been able to secure a more prominent role.

Keeps foot on gas in job battle Trammell started in center field in Wednesday's Cactus League loss to the Cubs and went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk.

Impact The productive outing pushed Trammell's spring average to a solid .289, while the round tripper was his second in exhibition play. Trammell has handled the most pressure-packed portion of spring with respect to his bid for a roster spot well, as he's 4-for-12 with a double, Wednesday's homer, two RBI, three walks and three runs over his last four Cactus League contests.

Mixed bag in final spring start Dunn recorded seven strikeouts but gave up four earned runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings in a Cactus League loss to the Cubs on Wednesday.

Impact Half of the damage against Dunn came in the form of of solo home runs by Cameron Maybin and Jake Marisnick, yet he also exhibited some of his trademark control issues. Dunn walked nine batters overall in 11 Cactus League frames, but Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports he came away from the outing pleased with how his arsenal has come along this spring in his battle with Nick Margevicius for the No. 6 spot in the rotation. "I'm happy with where I'm at. ... Fastball velo is still here," Dunn said after [Wednesday's] start. "Honestly, it feels like it's ticked up. The slider feel sharp. I'm really happy with the curveball shape and happy with the differential between the two."
