PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA
Luis Ortiz - Awarded another start Ortiz is slated to start Sunday against the Cubs at PNC Park.
Impact After holding the Yankees to two runs (one earned) while striking out five in five innings Tuesday following his promotion from Triple-A Indianapolis, Ortiz will be rewarded with a second straight turn through the rotation. The rookie now owns an 0.84 ERA and 0.84 WHIP through his first two big-league outings and will look to parlay a strong finish to the 2022 season into a spot in the Pirates' Opening Day rotation in 2023.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 ROTOWIRE
Ben Gamel - On bench Friday Gamel isn't in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.
Impact Gamel has been in a 5-for-39 funk at the plate over the past three weeks and has seen his playing decrease because of it. Oneil Cruz will fill in as Pittsburgh's designated hitter Friday, giving Kevin Newman a start at shortstop while batting fifth.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 ROTOWIRE
Ke'Bryan Hayes - Misses second straight start Hayes isn't starting Friday against the Cubs.
Impact Hayes didn't start Thursday against the Cubs either, but he came in as a pinch hitter and got hit by a pitch before stealing a base. Rodolfo Castro will slide over to the hot corner for Hayes and Ji-hwan Bae will start at second base, batting ninth.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 ROTOWIRE
Jason Delay - Sitting out Friday Delay isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.
Impact After making four consecutive starts behind the plate, Delay will hand catching duties over to Zack Collins on Friday, who will bat eighth.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 ROTOWIRE
Ji-hwan Bae - Starting at second in debut Bae had his contract selected by the Pirates and will start at second base and bat eighth Friday against the Cubs, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Impact The 23-year-old has been called up for his first taste of the majors and will make his debut Friday. Bae posted a .291/.364/.432 slash line with eight home runs, 53 RBI, 81 runs and 30 steals in 108 games at Triple-A this year, and he could see action at shortstop and in the outfield down the stretch, in addition to second base.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 ROTOWIRE
Tyler Heineman - Placed on 7-day IL Heineman (concussion) was placed on the 7-day injured list Friday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
Impact Heineman was slashing .364/.462/.455 over the past three weeks, but he will now be forced to sit out for at least a week. The move allows room for Ji-hwan Bae to join the active roster.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 ROTOWIRE
Willson Contreras - Still no timeline for return Contreras (ankle) resumed full activities Friday but there is still no return date in mind for him, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Impact Contreras has been held out of action since the end of August due to issues with his left ankle. It sounds like he's beginning to feel better, but with the end of the season fast approaching and the Cubs sitting well outside the postseason race, there doesn't seem to be much urgency to rush the star catcher back into the lineup.
