INJURIES

Watches first win slip away Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Red Sox, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over five-plus innings. He struck out thre...
Impact Staked to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, Anderson was reasonably effective through five frames, but after he walked the leadoff batter in the sixth manager Charlie Montoyo gave him the hook, and Anderson could only watch as the bullpen melted down for six runs. The right-hander did throw a season-high 83 pitches (55 strikes) and completed five innings for the first time, but with the Jays being extra-cautious right now with their remaining healthy starters, that might be about Anderson's limit. He'll take a 3.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through 14.2 innings into his next outing Sunday, at home against the Orioles.

Takes no-decision Anderson allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk across 3.2 innings pitched in the 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader. He struck out thr...
Impact Thursday marked yet another short start for Anderson as he continues to build up arm strength after missing the beginning of the season with an oblique strain. After tossing 45 and 59 pitches respectively in his first two outings, the 32-year-old upped his pitch count to 78 (44 strikes) while working into the fourth inning for the first time Thursday. Anderson will look to work deeper into the game and pick up his first win when he takes the ball Tuesday against Boston.

Allows one run in short outing Anderson hurled three innings against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. The game was suspended due to rain.
Impact After throwing 45 pitches in his season debut, Anderson hurled 59 on Saturday, 39 of which were strikes. He yielded only one extra-base hit in his three frames -- a solo home run to Austin Meadows in the third inning. Whether the right-hander will suffer a loss due to his lone mistake will be determined Sunday when the suspended game is completed. Anderson is expected to next take the mound Thursday at home against Philadelphia.

Anderson expected to start as Blue Jays host the Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays visit the Toronto Blue Jays
AUGUST 15, 2020 • Associated Press
Allows one run in season debut Anderson (oblique) allowed one run on a hit and two walks while striking out one in three innings versus the Red Sox on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Anderson missed a couple of weeks with an oblique strain, but he pitched fairly well in a short debut. His only run came on a Christian Vazquez single. Anderson threw 26 of his 45 pitches for strikes. The 32-year-old pitched to a 4.21 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 124 strikeouts in 139 innings last season with the Brewers. Anderson may still need a few weeks to get to a starter's workload. His next appearance is scheduled for next Saturday versus the Rays.

Heads to taxi squad The Blue Jays optioned Borucki to their taxi squad Thursday, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
Impact Though Borucki missed out on the 30-man Opening Day roster, he'll be on the short-list for a call-up after receiving a spot on the taxi squad, which currently includes two other players (pitcher Nate Pearson and catcher Caleb Joseph). Anthony Kay was able to beat out Pearson and Borucki for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, where he'll replace the injured Chase Anderson (oblique).

Starting season on IL Manager Charlie Montoyo announced Anderson (oblique) will begin the season on the injured list, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact The team indicated shortly after the right-hander suffered the oblique strain last week that he was unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, so it's not a surprise he's heading to the IL. Anderson continues to throw long toss and is progressing toward mound work, per Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca, but he has no official timeline for his return. Trent Thornton receives some stability in the rotation thanks to the news, while Ryan Borucki, Anthony Kay and Nate Pearson are in the mix for the No. 5 spot.

Throwing from 90 feet Anderson (oblique) was throwing off flat ground from 90 feet Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact The Blue Jays announced over the weekend that the veteran right-hander had been dealing with the oblique strain for several days, so it's encouraging to see him back to throwing relatively quickly. Pitching coach Pete Walker already said Anderson is unlikely to be available for the start of the season next week, but a return to the mound soon could go a long way toward minimizing his absence during the shortened season.
