Opening season in rotation Spiers will open the season as the Reds' fifth starter, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact It could be temporary until Andrew Abbott (shoulder) is ready, but Spiers will have at least a couple starts to convince the Reds he should remain in the rotation. The right-hander has had a strong showing this spring, collecting a 2.70 ERA and 10:4 K:BB across 10 frames.

Impact Spiers on the outside looking in at the Reds' projected rotation, but he remains on call if needed. The right-hander pitched in relief of starter Andrew Abbott, who made his spring debut Monday and is not certain to be ready to go when the regular season kicks off. "You know what? This kid has had a heck of a camp. He's filling up the strike zone and changes speed," Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said of Spiers' spring to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "I don't know him as well as the rest of these guys do, but he's handled himself really well." Behind Abbott Spiers appears to be behind Andrew Abbott for the Reds' fifth starter's job, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Impact Abbott started the spring a little bit behind because of a left shoulder issue, and he still hasn't pitched in a big league spring training game. But Abbott has pitched two innings in a minor league game and will benefit from the Reds not immediately needing a fifth starter to begin the season.
