Starting season in rotation Hernandez will start the Royals' fourth game of the season April 11 versus the Guardians, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Despite a tough pair of appearances so far in spring training, Hernandez is set to begin the year in the rotation. The 25-year-old showed promise in 85.2 innings last season, logging a 6-2 record, 3.68 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 74:41 K:BB across 24 appearances (11 starts). Rogers adds the Royals plans are to roll with a five-man rotation with multiple pitchers stretched out in bullpen roles. Hernandez starting the season in the rotation is encouraging, but he'll have to perform to keep that job.
APRIL 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles versus Giants Hernandez allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and struck out four in 2.2 innings in a loss to the Giants on Wednesday.
Impact Hernandez has gotten rocked through two spring starts, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) in 4.2 innings. That's not great for the 25-year-old, who is far from assured a spot in the rotation given the Royals' mix of established veterans and prospects competing for starting roles. Hernandez would likely need to show something better in his next spring start to get an edge over Jackson Kowar, though both of them could be ticketed to the bullpen or Triple-A Omaha if the Royals employ a five-man rotation. Hernandez started 11 of his 24 outings last season, posting a 3.68 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 74:41 K:BB through 85.2 innings.

Not starting again in 2021 Hernandez will not make another start this season, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Impact Manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that Hernandez won't start this week but will be available out of the bullpen. After he was originally expected to start Thursday versus Cleveland, it appears that Friday's start against the Tigers was his last. In that start he pitched five scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 3.86 in 85.2 innings.

Blanks Detroit in no-decision Hernandez didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 3-1 win over the Tigers, allowing two hits and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out one.
Impact The right-hander fought his control, tossing only 51 of 89 pitches for strikes, but after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, Hernandez settled in before turning things over to the bullpen. The 24-year-old will take a 3.68 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 74:41 K:BB through 85.2 innings into what should be his final appearance of the season next week at home against Cleveland.
SEPTEMBER 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Kansas City-Cleveland rained out Hernandez and the Royals won't play Wednesday after their game against Cleveland was postponed due to inclement weather.
Impact The two teams will make up the contest on a mutual off day next Monday. The Royals will most likely push all their starters back a day in the schedule as a result of the rainout, so Hernandez's next turn will presumably come Friday in Detroit.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Bumped back in rotation Hernandez is now projected to make his next start Wednesday versus Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander would have been available to pitch one game of Monday's doubleheader on regular rest, but he'll be pushed back a couple of days instead. Hernandez had shaky control in his last start Wednesday after he was moved up a day to make the outing. For the year, he's pitched to a 3.90 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 73:38 K:BB while posting a 6-2 record in 23 appearances (10 starts).
SEPTEMBER 19, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Control issues spoil outing Hernandez (6-2) allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out three across four innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Athletics.
Impact Entering Wednesday's outing, Hernandez had allowed multiple runs in only two of his last eight starts and had completed at least six innings six times in that span. While he allowed only a solo home run and no additional extra-base hits, Hernandez walked four batters -- his highest total since July 24. Control of the strike zone is an emerging concern for Hernandez, as he has now surrendered 10 free passes across his last 16 innings of work. Despite the poor outing and some concerning trends in his skills, Hernandez likely deserves the benefit of the doubt heading into his next start based on his excellent results across the last two months.
SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Wednesday Hernandez is starting Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
Impact Hernandez was initially scheduled to start Thursday, but he'll be moved up a day since the Royals will shift their rotation plans. The right-hander has earned wins in three of his last four outings and has posted a 1.09 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 24.2 innings during that time.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses six shutout innings Hernandez (6-1) allowed three hits and three walks with one strikeout in six innings to earn the win over Baltimore on Thursday.
Impact While the strikeout total was low, Hernandez managed to throw 55 of 89 pitches for strikes in the contest. The 24-year-old was excellent in recording his fourth quality start in his last six appearances (five starts). For the year, Hernandez has a 3.29 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 70:34 K:BB in 76.2 innings. He's allowed more than two runs in just two of 10 outings since the All-Star break, emerging as a reliable option in Kansas City's rotation. He lines up for a home start against Oakland next week.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Earns win in quality start Hernandez (5-1) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over six innings Friday, striking out three and earning a win over the White Sox.
Impact It was an impressive outing for Hernandez who kept the White Sox scoreless through five innings and never gave up an extra-base hit. He coughed up two runs in the sixth but his offense already tacked on seven runs in support. Over his last seven outings, the 6-foot-4 righty is 4-0 with a 1.92 ERA and a 31:10 K:BB through 42.1 frames. Hernandez is lined up to face the Orioles on the road next week.
SEPTEMBER 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Dominates in extended relief outing Hernandez hurled 5.2 innings in relief against the Mariners on Friday, allowing an unearned run on one hit and no walks while striking out six. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact The right-hander was originally slated to start Saturday's contest against Seattle, but he was instead called upon in relief Friday after starter Kris Bubic made it through just 4.1 frames. Hernandez was nearly unhittable in his 80-pitch appearance, retiring the first 14 hitters he faced before yielding an unearned run when a single and sacrifice fly plated Seattle's designated runner in the 10th inning. The 24-year-old has surrendered just one earned run while striking out 14 over his past 12.2 frames and will almost certainly rejoin the rotation next week.

Silences Chicago bats in fourth win Hernandez improved to 4-1 after holding the Cubs to one run while striking out eight across seven innings Sunday in the Royals' 9-1 victory. He scattered four hits and three walks...
Impact The seven-inning outing represented a new career high for Hernandez, who brought his ERA under 4.00 for the first time all season. The 24-year-old right-hander has put himself on the mainstream fantasy radar over his last five starts, submitting a 2.05 ERA and 0.98 WHIP while striking out 22 in 30.2 innings over that stretch. He'll get a favorable landing spot in his next projected start in Seattle on Saturday, when he'll face a Mariners offense that ranks in the bottom six in the majors in batting average (.234) and strikeout rate (24.4 percent) in the second half.

Hernandez scheduled to start for Kansas City against Chicago

Yields four runs in no-decision Hernandez allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings in Monday's win over Houston. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Hernandez coughed up an RBI single to Yordan Alvarez in the first inning but kept Houston's lineup quiet over the next three frames. He then allowed three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a pair of solo homers by Aledmys Diaz and Carlos Correa. It was the first time all season that the 24-year-old gave up multiple home runs in one outing. His ERA jumped to 4.33 alongside a 52:25 K:BB on the year. Hernandez is expected to face the Cubs in Chicago this weekend.

Hernandez scheduled to start as Kansas City hosts Houston

The Royals are expected to send Carlos Hernandez to the mound Monday and the Astros will give Jake Odorizzi the start

No-decision versus Yankees Hernandez allowed a run on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings versus the Yankees on Monday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact The 24-year-old has allowed just two runs in his last 17.2 innings as he's settled into a groove at the major-league level. Hernandez's lone run allowed Monday came on a seventh-inning Luke Voit single. After a rocky beginning this year, Hernandez has a 4.11 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 52:25 K:BB through 46 innings. He's pitched well enough to force manager Mike Matheny to maintain a six-man rotation with Brady Singer (shoulder) returning Wednesday. That leaves Hernandez in line to make his next start versus Houston next week.
AUGUST 10, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Posts third victory Hernandez (3-1) earned the win over the White Sox on Wednesday, pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six.
Impact The right-hander needed 93 pitches to get through five frames, but he hung around long enough to take advantage of a generous offense and notch his second straight victory. Hernandez racked up a healthy 15 swinging strikes and tied his season high with six punchouts. Since moving into the rotation July 18, he has posted a 4.08 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB across 17.2 innings. Hernandez is tentatively slated to make his next start at home against the Yankees early next week.
AUGUST 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses six scoreless innings Hernandez (2-1) earned the win Thursday against the White Sox after tossing six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while fanning four.
Impact Hernandez only has three starts on the year and all of them have come in July. This was the first time he tossed more than four complete frames and was his best outing of the season so far. The right-hander owns a 4.15 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP across five appearances this month.

Early exit in no-decision Hernandez didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 9-8 win over the Tigers, surrendering five runs (four earned) on two hits and four walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out two...
Impact It was a brutal performance by the veteran, who tossed only 27 of 53 pitches for strikes before getting the hook with the Royals in a 5-0 hole. Fortunately for Hernandez, the team rallied and he avoided the loss. He now has a 5.72 ERA and 1.66 WHIP through 28.1 innings with an untenable 15.9 percent walk rate, and he should get bumped from the rotation as soon as the Kansas City staff gets a little healthier.
JULY 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Hit with first loss Hernandez (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings in a loss to the Orioles on Sunday.
Impact Hernandez got through the first two innings without much of a sweat but had some trouble in the third. He ended up loading the bases before surrendering a two-run single to Ramon Urias. The 24-year-old got no run support from his team to potentially help erase the early deficit and was handed the loss in his first start of the year. He did show some promising stuff, as he missed plenty of bats and has 12 strikeouts over his last 7.2 innings. Hernandez owns a 4.91 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB over 25.2 innings. There hasn't been any update from manager Brandon Hyde on if Hernandez is expected to make another start or if he'll return to his initial role in the bullpen.
