Claimed by Detroit The Tigers claimed Hernandez off waivers from the Phillies.
Impact Hernandez had been designated for assignment after logging a 5.26 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 23:13 K:BB in 25.2 innings for the Phillies. The hard-throwing right-hander does not have minor-league options remaining, so he will join the Tigers' active roster.
JUNE 16 • ROTOWIRE
Dropped from 40-man roster The Phillies designated Hernandez for assignment Wednesday.
Impact Hernandez doesn't have any minor-league options remaining, so the Phillies had to remove him from their 40-man roster to clear a spot for right-hander Michael Mercado, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. After being claimed off waivers from the Royals in the spring, Hernandez had operated as a low-leverage reliever for Philadelphia this season, logging a 5.26 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 23:13 K:BB in 25.2 innings. Any team willing to trade for or put in a waiver claim for the right-hander will have to assume the money remaining on his $1.16 million contract for 2025.

Brandon Marsh delivers for Phillies in 11th, rookie Otto Kemp has 3 hits in 4-3 win over Cubs

JUNE 10 • Associated Press
Working in low-leverage situations Hernandez threw a clean ninth inning in Tuesday's 8-3 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out one.
Impact Hernandez bounced back after giving up one run in his last appearance, and it was his first spotless outing since May 19. The 28-year-old right-hander has one hold and zero saves in 2025, and his 5.87 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 21:13 K:BB through 23 innings are unlikely to get him into the Phillies' high-leverage mix in the future.

Kansas City Royals release right-hander Ross Stripling and catcher Luke Maile

The Kansas City Royals have released right-hander Ross Stripling and catcher Luke Maile after they opted out of their contracts
MARCH 23 • Associated Press
Claimed by Philly The Phillies claimed Hernandez off waivers from the Royals on Sunday.
Impact The right-hander was put on outright waivers after missing out on Kansas City's Opening Day bullpen Saturday, and it didn't take long for him to be scooped up by another team. Hernandez had a 3.30 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 27:16 K:BB over 30 innings during the regular season last year, but he struggled in spring training with eight runs allowed and an 8:5 K:BB over 10.1 innings.
MARCH 23 • ROTOWIRE
Doesn't make KC bullpen Hernandez will not make the Kansas City bullpen and is set to be put on outright waivers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact He's out of minor league options so he's likely to be claimed by another team. While he had a 6.97 ERA this spring with a 8:5 K:BB ratio in 10.1 innings, another team may take a chance on his 100-mph fastball.
MARCH 23 • ROTOWIRE
Settles with Kansas City The Royals and Hernandez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.16 million contract Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact It was the second year of arbitration eligibility for Hernandez, who posted a 3.30 ERA and 27:16 K:BB across 30 innings in 2024. The righty has teased with his big fastball but has shown no indication to this point that he can be consistently relied upon.
JANUARY 9 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled from Triple-A The Royals recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Impact He'll absorb the roster spot vacated by the injured Will Smith (back). Hernandez has permitted eight runs (six earned) with a 14:9 K:BB over 15.2 frames this season during his time with the big club.
AUGUST 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Royals optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Omaha on Monday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Hernandez allowed just one earned run with a 6:1 K:BB over four innings during his most recent stint in the majors but nonetheless is being sent out. John Schreiber is back from the injured list to absorb his roster spot.
AUGUST 19, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to majors The Royals recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.
Impact With Hunter Harvey on the injured list due to a back injury, Hernandez will return to Kansas City to fill the open spot in the Royals' bullpen. The 27-year-old righty owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through 11.2 innings in the majors this year, though he has surrendered seven runs in just 7.2 frames since being optioned to Omaha in early July.
AUGUST 10, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Triple-A The Royals optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
Impact Hernandez spent just over two weeks with the Royals, allowing five runs (four unearned) across 8.2 innings. However, he'll give up his active roster spot to Walter Pennington and return to Triple-A.

Handed loss Tuesday Hernandez (0-1) took the loss versus the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.
Impact Hernandez hadn't given up a run over his first 3.2 innings back in the majors since his recall June 18. That changed in the seventh inning Tuesday, as the Marlins got RBI singles from Nick Gordon and Jazz Chisholm to flip the script on the Royals. Hernandez has allowed three runs (two earned) with a 3:4 K:BB over seven innings across eight appearances this year. While initially thought to be an option for high-leverage work, Hernandez suffered a shoulder impingement in spring training and has yet to record a save or hold in the majors this year.
JUNE 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down to Triple-A The Royals optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Impact Hernandez didn't make his season debut for the Royals until last week after recovering from a shoulder injury and has allowed one run with a 1:3 K:BB over 2.2 innings covering four appearances. He'll likely be back with the big club sooner rather than later, but the Royals needed to free up a roster spot for Daniel Lynch, who was called up from Omaha to make a spot start Thursday versus the Twins.
MAY 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Bullpen scheduled Wednesday Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Monday that Hernandez (shoulder) threw a bullpen session over the weekend and is scheduled for another Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Hernandez landed on the Royals' 15-day IL on Thursday due to a right shoulder impingement that kept him out of spring training. If Wednesday's session goes well, the right-hander could see some rehab assignment work before returning to the majors. With the Royals last season, Hernandez posted a 5.27 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 77:31 K:BB over 70 innings.
APRIL 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Grabs fourth save Hernandez picked up the save in Tuesday's 11-10 victory over the White Sox. He allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out one over one inning.
Impact Hernandez allowed a run for a fourth straight appearance, though he'd manage to hang on to a one-run lead Tuesday, earning his fourth save. It's been a tough run for Hernandez, who's allowed six runs in his last 2.2 innings while blowing two saves in that span. His ERA is up to 4.87 with a 1.21 WHIP with 75:26 K:BB this season. While Hernandez should still see high-leverage work in Kansas City, it's hard to trust him for fantasy purposes.
SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sustains 10th loss Hernandez (1-10) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks over one-third of an inning, taking the loss and a blown save Friday versus the Blue Jays.
Impact Austin Cox started the eighth inning but sustained a left knee injury after facing two batters. Hernandez proceeded to allow an inherited runner to score before getting tagged for three runs himself. He has three blown saves and two saves over his last seven appearances, a span in which he's allowed six runs over six innings. He's at a 4.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 74:25 K:BB with three saves, 12 holds and five blown saves through 63.2 innings this season. Hernandez should continue to see high-leverage looks, but the quality of his performance of late puts him on the fantasy fringe.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Takes blown save, loss Hernandez (1-9) allowed a run on a two hits over one-third of an inning, taking the loss and a blown save Tuesday versus the Pirates.
Impact Austin Cox left a man on base in the eighth inning and Hernandez surrendered a two-run home run to Ke'Bryan Hayes. Hernandez's uneven August -- 8.68 ERA, 1.93 WHIP, 2-for-4 in save chances -- has prevented him from claiming the closer role that opened up when Scott Barlow was traded to San Diego. Hernandez has a 4.33 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 73:22 K:BB through 62.1 innings overall while adding three saves, 12 holds and four blown saves this season.
AUGUST 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Notches five-out save Hernandez picked up the save in Wednesday's 4-0 win over Oakland, striking out one over 1.2 scoreless innings.
Impact Hernandez was able to strand the bases loaded after coming on with one out in the eighth inning before closing out the A's in the ninth to earn his third save. The 26-year-old Hernandez has now converted his last two save chances after allowing three runs in his previous two appearances (1.1 innings). He now sports a 4.28 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 73:21 K:BB across 61 innings this season. Hernandez should see the majority of closing chances going forward in Kansas City, though the left-handed Austin Cox could see opportunities as well, depending on matchups.
