Serving as opener Saturday Hurter will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher for Saturday's game against the Rays, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact Hurter will draw his fourth start of the season, but as was the case in the previous three outings, he'll be operating as an opener once again Saturday rather than a traditional starter. The southpaw tossed 23 pitches in his most recent relief appearance Thursday against the Pirates, so the Tigers are unlikely to ask him to cover more than 2-to-3 frames Saturday. Once Hurter exits the game, right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long is expected to work in bulk relief.

Opening for Tigers on Friday Hurter will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Friday's game against the Reds, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact It will be the second "start" this week for Hurter, who allowed one run over 2.2 innings Tuesday in Baltimore. Hurter has recorded more than three outs in 16 of 19 appearances this season, so he's capable of providing a little more length than your typical opener. Keider Montero is expected to handle a bulk relief role for Detroit.

Serving as opener Tuesday Hurter will be the Tigers' opening pitcher in Tuesday's contest versus the Orioles, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact Hurter is stretched out more than most openers, having gone three innings in three appearances this season and multiple frames with regularity. He will be followed by Sawyer Gipson-Long, who is slated to absorb most of Tuesday's workload for the Tigers.

Pitches well but takes first loss Hurter (2-1) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk across two innings of relief and took the loss Tuesday against the White Sox. He struck out four.
Impact Hurter was the second pitcher up in a bullpen game started by Beau Brieske. The former pitched well while setting a new season high in strikeouts, but he got no help defensively or offensively in the team's 8-1 defeat. Hurter has been lights out this year with a 1.72 ERA and 31 strikeouts across 31.1 innings, and he'll continue to be a key bullpen option for the Tigers.

Starting Wednesday Hurter will start Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact The Tigers are going to lean on their bullpen to get them through Wednesday's series finale, so Hurter will get a chance to make his first start of the season. The 26-year-old southpaw has been very reliable out of the bullpen so far this season with a 2.35 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across 23 frames, and six of his 13 appearances have lasted two innings or more.

Getting start in bullpen game Hurter will start Wednesday against the Cardinals in what's expected to be a bullpen game for the Tigers, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact Hurter frequently served as a bulk reliever for the Tigers in the second half of 2024, but he's occupied a more traditional relief role through the first two months of this season after missing out on a spot in the Opening Day rotation. The 26-year-old southpaw has pitched well over his 13 appearances, compiling a 2.35 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across 23 frames. He hasn't tossed more than 30 pitches in an appearance since April 26, so Hurter may not be asked to work deep enough into Wednesday's start to qualify for a win.

Picks up first 2025 win Hurter (1-0) gave up one run across 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Orioles. He allowed a hit and two walks.
Impact After Keider Montero covered 4.1 innings to start the game, Hurter finished the fourth then worked into the seventh to earn his first win of the season out of the bullpen. The lefty has been solid with a 2.65 ERA across 17 innings, which is in line with the 2.58 ERA he posted across 45.1 regular-season innings in 2024. Hurter isn't missing many bats, however, with only 11 strikeouts across those 17 frames.

Another three-inning save Tuesday Hurter picked up the save in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Yankees, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing two hits and a walk. He struck out three.
Impact Hurter entered in the seventh protecting a 5-0 lead and went on to blank the Yankees for another three innings. He now has two multi-inning saves in his last two appearances, though those came over a week apart. Hurter owns a 3.68 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB in 7.1 innings.

Greene homers as the Tigers use fast start to beat Mariners 9-6 for 1st win of the season

Riley Greene homered and Javier Báez hit a two-run double in Detroit’s six-run first inning, helping the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6 for their first victory of the season
APRIL 1, 2025 • Associated Press
Tallies three-inning save Hurter picked up the save in Monday's 9-6 win over Seattle, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks over three innings. He struck out two.
Impact The lefty reliever entered in the seventh inning and finished off the victory to secure his first career save. The only blemish on Hurter's performance was a ninth inning two-run homer off the bat of Cal Raleigh when Detroit held a five-run lead. This was a rare save for Hurter, who should continue to serve in middle relief for the Tigers.

Competing for last bullpen opening Hurter, Brenan Hanifee and Andrew Chafin are likely competing for Detroit's final bullpen spot to begin the regular season Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Impact Hurter and Chafin are both southpaws, which could give them an edge, though the righty Hanifee impressed for the Tigers last year with a 1.84 ERA across 29.1 regular-season innings. Ultimately, all three players figure to see time in the majors this season, as the team will likely shift players into and out of the bullpen. Hurter pitched well last year during his MLB debut, compiling a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 regular-season innings.
MARCH 23, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Bullpen spot less secure? With Andrew Chafin joining the Tigers on a minor-league deal last month, Hurter's roster spot could be in jeopardy coming out of camp, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Impact The lefty Hurter pitched well last year during his MLB debut, compiling a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 regular-season innings. However, the 34-year-old Chafin has a lot more MLB experience, which could lead the Tigers to choose him as a southpaw for their bullpen to complement the likes of Tyler Holton and Sean Guenther. Hurter still probably has a leg up in the competition, though he'd likely feel more secure if he strung together some strong outings to wrap up the spring slate.
MARCH 4, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
May work in swing role in 2025 While he will compete for a regular rotation spot during spring training, Hurter and Kenta Maeda may end up splitting bulk pitching duties, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports...
Impact With the Tigers recently adding Jack Flaherty to the mix, they now have a surplus of starting options. Flaherty, Tarik Skubal and Reese Olson all figure to be locked into the rotation. Behind them, Detroit has the likes of Hurter, Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe, Casey Mize and Keider Montero. With the exception of Jobe, who made his MLB debut toward the end of last year and appeared in just two regular season contests, all of those pitchers started games in 2024. The veteran Cobb should snag a rotation spot in the early going, which leaves plenty of players vying for one role. Jobe has the most upside of the bunch and could run away with the job if he impresses, though manager A.J. Hinch may mix and match and use some pitchers in bulk. The lefty Hurter and righty Maeda could be a natural pairing in that scenario, with the two potentially working together in some contests.
FEBRUARY 5, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up win Friday Hurter (6-1) allowed one run on two hits across four innings of relief to earn the win Friday against the White Sox. He struck out one.
Impact Hurter followed opener Brenan Hanifee, who pitched two innings, and pitched well to record his sixth win through 10 appearances while punching Detroit's playoff ticket. Hurter has had a nice rookie campaign, posting a stellar 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 innings, often working in bulk relief. It remains to be seen how the Tigers structure their pitching staff for the postseason, but the 26-year-old has likely earned a prominent role based on his strong performance.
